Not worth the $23 I paid, tastes like a weak Zin. Yes, a decent red quaff but a bit acerbic and certainly unremarkable.

Had been expecting great things of this new bottling, but I'm afraid it failed to deliver. A surprising preponderance of red fruit, with cranberry particularly notable. Lacked richness, depth and length, but more off-putting was a marked astringency and a drying sensation on the palate. The wine did not improve on Day 2 or Day 3. Worth trying for novelty value, as certainly not a traditional Napa Cab. But beyond that, better avoided.

Crowd pleaser with the California set due to its unctuous sweetness. Quite simple and drinks fast. More sugar than fruit.
  • slippytoad commented:

3/8/15, 7:04 PM - I mean there wasn't really a lot of red or black fruit to speak of, not in the normal sense. The sweetness came through like white sugar which isn't necessarily a bad thing, and we did enjoy it.

A little disappointing considering this was a rebuy. Slight astringency but it might be that I don't really like Riojas

12/24/14, 3:36 PM - I liked the previous bottle so bought more. Bottle variation perhaps? I've drank countless older Riojas with mixed results. Is Temperanillo more finicky than other grapes?

A little thin. Improved after an hour or so but not worth the money

Never really developed after a couple of hours. Weak and sour.
  • slippytoad commented:

11/12/13, 8:14 AM - I recall the other bottle I drank a few months ago did not impress much either, but I took it to a gathering and did not make notes. The Wine Club is usually pretty good with bottle quality, shipping and storage but these could have certainly had a tough time across the Atlantic!

Anyway, I've had way better Riojas for half the money. Recommendations?

Rich coffee and dark chocolate notes. Quite approachabe now but a few years will allow it to show better. Somewhat dry, and not so much obvious fruit, but in a good way. This is big and classy. The '05 has more reach and extension, but this is likely the better value. Glad I have five more and may look for more besides. This seems like an under-the-radar over-achiever.
