Red
2019 de Négoce Pinot Noir OG N.301 Sonoma Coast
Enticing strawberry and cherry aromatics, bright and fresh spicy red fruit flavors, vibrant on the palate. Huge value.

PNP at restaurant. Good from the start. Plum and black cherry aromatics. Fine tannins. Luscious, soft texture. Nice fruit, but not a bomb. Finish is long and pleasant. Delicious, interesting wine.

4/30/17, 10:16 AM - We brought it from home and paid the corkage.

Red
2012 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch Russian River Valley
I expected more after reading most previous tasting notes. Popped and poured. Perhaps my bottle was going through a phase. The fruit was there, but it was also a touch on the bretty side. Maybe too brambly for my palate?

7/26/16, 6:41 PM - Wilypod, good suggestion, but the bottle left in recycling today and the cork went in the trash. I'm not saying it was brett, but the bottle was off for some reason.

Corked..... daggnabbit.
Tried the plastic wrap trick to no avail. Maybe because it's Glad and not Saran.?
  • The Wine Write commented:

8/23/15, 8:31 PM - Suggest you contact McPrice.

Bummed...no, pissed! Drop off at restaurant the afternoon before our 8:30 reservation and when we showed up for dinner, it was sitting on the counter...near the stoves! I guess I shouldn't have expected more, as this restaurant has had a horrible wine program from Day 1.
...as such, I was neither able to enjoy it nor properly evaluate it. And to think I've been saving this bottle for no less than 3 years.

6/5/15, 4:47 AM - Curious, had you asked them to decant it or something?

Decanted through an aerator 10 hours prior to tasting. The muted fruit tasted mature through a heavy haze of tannin so I doubt this wine will ever come together. Personally, I think this style is a mistake and certainly eliminates all but the most optimistic of the senior crowd. So many Paso wines are beautifully accessible after several years. I truly wish this producer were one of them.

2/24/15, 2:06 PM - What do you think the typical drinking window is on these?

  • The Wine Write commented:

2/25/15, 7:12 AM - Appreciate your insight. I had a 2006 Akasha last April that I picked up via WineBid. It was extremely closed early (was a restaurant pop n pour); then seemed to wax and wane through the night. Interesting, but not what you want to see. I think I lean toward opening early rather than sitting on them.

So much better than the last bottle. Black cherry fruit for days on the tongue. Rich, dark, savory fruit on the nose, with some smoked meat notes. A pleasurable drink.

I don't like this wine at all. It tastes like cherry cola with alcohol in it. I would call it a wine "beverage product" before calling it a wine.

11/29/14, 10:48 AM - I'll happily take that second bottle off your hands.

Red
2009 Herman Story Grenache On The Road California
Huge, fat, and sluggish...massive extract, lots of wood, and the warmer aspects of the vintage are taking over and pushing this into Willy Wonka land. This is a 10+ on the richness scale, and shows little poise or balance and even less freshness. At this point the profile is dominated by brown sugar, dark wood, basalmic, and earthy notes. Similarly port-like and portly as the '09 Larner Grenache I had a month ago. Loved these 2009 HS wines on release but I do not like they way ageing...at least the grenache based ones.

All that being said is not enough to tarnish my overall appreciation for Russel and his wines. A top flight producer of outstanding wines that are a great value and pale only to the warmth, friendliness, and generosity of the man himself. One of Paso's finest.

8/31/13, 8:29 PM - I'm wondering if this is HS isolated. I've recently had a McPrice Myers 09 Syrah that I rated 91 and an 09 Villa Creek blend that was fine.
Any possibility this is just a phase that will resolve in bottle?
That being said, I doubt I wait on the 09s I have left.

  • The Wine Write commented:

9/2/13, 4:35 PM - Almost embarassed to admit, but I tweeted my less than favorable note a few weeks ago...and yesterday, Russell favorited it. I think he saw that I'd drank the wine, but he didn't read the note.

Popped and poured. A bit disappointing. There just wasn't the oomph I expect in HS.
  • The Wine Write commented:

8/21/13, 2:37 PM - Yeah, I just saw your note, and hated to see it...thought I might have just gotten an off bottle. I plan to pop some 09s from other wineries to see if we have a bad trend here. Love your notes.
