An unfortunate end to what was a fantastic wine. I've had this in the cellar for about 15 years. Previous bottles were fantastic and I was holding on to this for a special night. Well, it was a particularly difficult week at work and this was just calling out. Unfortunately, instead of being a fantastic end to the week, it followed suit of the past 4 days. Way past it's prime. Dark brownish garnet with a tan rim. Nose of stewed dark fruit, raisins, leather and petrol. Short finish and still has some tannic backbone. This was consumed over 4hrs, and unfortunately didn't improve with air. Disappointing ending for this wine. Score Withheld

12/13/23, 3:40 PM - Funny, I had a couple of past-their-prime bottles in 2008. I just now discovered that I still had one bottle left and it’s fantastic, with no sign if advanced aging and a solid core of fruit.

Wow, Cellartracker is just the best! I am surprised and happy to see several rather recent notes on this and especially the rating, which before this note was 91.6p
I have just texted back and forth with some wine friends about this where I described it as surprisingly lively and worthy of a 91-92 rating. And then the avg on here is 91.6. CT Average is increasingly becoming the most trustworthy wine critic there is! At least to my taste.
Anyway, I’d suggest drinking your bottles now while the wine is still lively and in good balance between primary, secondary and developed tertiary notes. Only drawback is the slightly noticable 14.5% abv in the finish. A bit lower alcohol and I might have scored it 93

1/14/22, 5:25 PM - Just drank my last bottle and gave it 93 pts. (Posted note on CellarTracker). I am surprised by how this wine has retained so much fruit and such a full-bodied nature. It is more expressive now than it was 5, 10 and 15 years ago, and for many years was pretty closed. However, the fruit is starting to show some stray/prune notes and it’s probably time to think about finishing any remaining bottles. A bit overpowering on the finish both in terms of tannin and slightly over-extracted, over-ripe fruit keeps it from being an even higher-scoring wine.

Better than my first bottle- so that's something. This is good but awfully austere. No idea what to do with this- keep forever and hope it becomes more drinkable? With the searing acidity, I'm not sure what else there is to do...

11/25/20, 2:24 PM - Something was wrong with your bottle. Drinking it now (admittedly, from magnum) and the acidity is not especially high, and nothing austere about it. Plenty of soft fruit—pear, apricot and apple, very slightly off-dry (or at least a perception of sweetness.... possibly an illusion created by the fruit flavors). Good stuff. Perfect Thanksgiving wine....

Brown appearance. Aromas of very old Barolo, with wet wool, sausage water and terpentine. Thought it could be something like 40-50 years. Still rich and generous, though.

10/29/19, 4:04 PM - Just opened mine tonight (10 days after yours), and my bottle matches yours exactly. Brown, vague oxidized notes and seems very advanced for a ‘99. Not corked, and seal on cork seemed fine. Something is not right as this tastes like a not-great 40 year old Barolo. FWIW, my bottle was imported from Polanar Selections.

11/16/19, 8:10 AM - I actually don’t think it’s the wine, I think it’s problem with some bottles (whether a bottling issue or distribution chain (heat) issue). However I just opened my last bottle (intending to taste and pour out if it was ruined like the last one). It was purchased at the same me and place, stores by me since. However this bottle was pretty terrific, fresh and proper. Nothing earth shattering but very much what you’d expect from the wine, probably 93-points, and delightful and enjoyable. Not even any real bricking, let alone the brown wine I had a couple of weeks back....

Slightly cooked. Showed some cherry, tobacco, and tar. Disappointed as this too has been treated well since purchase.

2/1/18, 6:11 PM - Mine is a bit cooked too. Cork looks fine and I’ve treated it well since purchase on release from Zachys (I think). It’s just a little stewey but that shouldn’t be the case with a 2004. This is my third bottle and I’m drinking through them rapidly to get rid of them. (They’re still quite drinkable, just a bit stewed and advanced looking for the vintage at this age).

Really in a good place now, clean and modern styled without being overly rich or oaky. Fruit is precise and clean, this may not be a long, long term wine, but certainly seems worth following over the next 10-12 years.

7/1/13, 6:32 PM - I'm finishing off the bottle as I type. It was pretty expressive out of the bottle, but is even better today, but I wouldn't do anything radical that could potentially screw up the wine. 2-3 hours in the decanter certainly won't hurt and might help a bit. Try to save a glass or 1/3 bottle for day 2...

Fantastic wine....great focused fruit, juicy acidity, tongue coating tannins. Not sure it can maintain this flamboyance past its youth, but it's absolutely delicious now!
  • Employee500 commented:

4/18/13, 6:34 PM - We opened it and had a small glass (to get some air into the bottle) about 1 hour before we actually drank the majority of the bottle. I think the little bit of aeration helped, although it was never particularly closed/tight....If you want to decant, an hour or two wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't do anything insane like 6-10+ hours....

I've discovered the discrepancy in the bottles can be tied to the importer. The bottles from Domaine Select Wine Estates are the good ones (consistently 91-92 points for my taste) and the others (importer unnamed, but has the word "Palm" in the name) are not so good--maybe heat damaged, or maybe just got some lesser bottles. For some reason the same retailer (Costco) had loads of bottles from both of these importers. I returned all my non-DSWE bottles and exchanged them for DSWE bottles.
  • Employee500 commented:

12/11/12, 6:20 AM - If it were the Costco wine they would have had to rebottle it in the Varej bottles....I saw the WTSO offer and was considering it, but I had assumed it was a different wine in some way from the regular Serralunga bottling. In any event, I generally wouldn't worry about buying Palm Bay bottles based on a single experience like this and I've had many, many Palm Bay imports in the past without incident.
