Decanted for several hours. Served blind in a flight of 9 cabernet based wines from the 2003 vintage. My #1 wine and the groups consensus #2 wine. The nose shows like a classic left bank Bordeaux and features coffee grinds, saddle leather, cedar and cassis. The palate is deep and mouth filling with layers of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. Long finish. Not at all overdone or roasted, this is a classic ripe year Bordeaux with a long life ahead of it.

4/14/24, 8:05 PM - The wines were decanted at 3pm and consumed at 8pm, so 5-6 hours total.

PNP. This is a little funky on the nose, some VA, oxidized cranberry and stewed cherry. Crisp, glossy and slightly tannic palate, about the opposite of what I expected from a Chambolle with 14 years of age. Drinkable but not very exciting or complex.

FYI provenance on this bottle is excellent. It was part of a 6 pack purchased on release in early 2013 from the Wine Club in SF, and stored in my 55 degree temperature controlled cellar. These have the ArdeaSeal synthetic cork.

Double Decanted then rested in bottle for 2 hours. The nose shows mature, with elements of figs, raisins and prunes combined with some kirsch and seaweed components. Sweet fruit, moderately lively with a silky texture and very refined and resolved tannins. I liked this more than the 98 Papes, as that wine was showing some VA and chemical elements on the nose.

1/14/24, 12:06 PM - VA= volatile acidity. Vinegar smell, with a bit of chemical mixed in.

PNP. Man this is lovely. Beautiful flinty nose, rich lemon contrasts with the smoky aromas. Deep, rich and lively palate, silky texture, very creamy yet not heavy and a finish that goes on and on. Excellent!

3/16/23, 12:01 PM - I’m a “classic mode” CT user, sorry for the late reply. I have a few of these and like to try 1 soon after taking delivery to get a read on the vintage. I’m general I find Boillot’s wines to drink very well young, with a sweet spot at 6-8 years from vintage. I’ve also had a fair amount of premoxed Boillot wines 2008, 2010 Mouchere come to mind, so as a rule I don’t age them as confidently as I would a PYCM

  • llink commented:

3/16/23, 7:38 PM - 6-8 years from vintage. I’ve drunk 34 bottles over the past 5 years. 4 of the 34 were premoxed, so a little more than 10%. The youngest was a 2015 Meursault Genevrieres opened within the last year.

PNP. Beautiful nose showing sandalwood, spice and red cherry. The palate is deep and rich for an 11, with a ton of dry extract that revealed itself in the drying finish. Very nice bottle drunk 10 years too early.

3/16/23, 2:31 PM - @gilrbo Sorry for the very late reply. The wine is enjoyable today, and 2011 isn't a great vintage, so if you have at least 2 bottles I'd pop one. It's just that when you open a 4-figure bottle of wine, you'd like it to be at its peak. And I'm guessing that peak for a DRC from 2011 is 20-25 years from vintage?

PNP. Mature nose, decaying leaves, dried roses and spice. Beautiful palate, mid weight cherry fruit, with balsamic elements and a drying finish. This got better with air.
  • llink commented:

8/19/22, 1:01 PM - I'd give it 3 hours. This wine has a lot of "autumnal" mature notes, and I think they soften with some air.

Removing the wax top on this is a less than enjoyable experience. The wine pours a pale dull lemon. Decanted for 1 hour. Aromatics include lemon, light touch of cream, citrus, wet rock, all very appealing. Medium body, medium + intensity, high in acidity, flavors of green apple, lemon, flint, sea shells, and stone. The quality of flavors is extremely pure and focused. The finish is noteworthy as it has staying power. This notches the score up a level. I would agree, sorta like Riesling meets Chablis in a way. Recommended.
  • llink commented:

8/1/21, 12:06 PM - You don’t need to remove the wax. It’s brittle and will easily crack when you plunge the corkscrew into the wax and cork. Just pretend the wax isn’t there.
