2001 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo
Served against Rioja Alfa’s 2001 904, and the style is a little more austere and dusty. Suffered by the comparison but was still quite brilliant. It needs food to show it off.

So any gap is in on my part, not the vigneron.

Served for Christmas dinner 2019, and the best wine pairing I have ever managed for that meal. A proper delight. To everyone.
Must try Musar as a regular Christmas dinner wine.
Wonderful maturity and match. Drinking so well right now,

Hope it brings you the same pleasure.

Way way better than the 2004. Bouquet was elegant, oaky, and premature but still better than many. Will doubtless improve as claimed, but would happily drink now, when I am normally a late drinker. Certainly not 2035!

11/13/17, 7:23 AM - I score the wines on current drinking pleasure. Not an imagined future. So I can track their progress.
I might score current margaux en barrique 71 for taking the enamel off my teeth. Doesn't mean it's without potential, just that it's undrinkable at that point.

At £10 (Majestic 30% off), this was good value, and very pleasurable. But this is being sold 5 years too young. So its virtues are being buried. May appeal to an American palate, as it is very full bodied. The sensuous smokey flavours of the grape are not fully coming through. But still very more-ish. Happy to order from a menu, but not one for the cellar.

I dissent from the majority. Drank over 3 hours. This is a very youthful, full-on Cabernet. High alcohol. Blackcurrant and mint. Some vanilla-oak. But it's a bit sharp and one-dimensional with little persistence or secondary interest. Shrill and angular. Stern and lacking middle and end-palate warmth. Tonnes of fruit and front-palate kick, with good acid. This kind of fruit and acid extract needs some sweetness, either from actual residual sugar, or glycerol alcohol, or from perfectly ripened tannins, none of which this wine possesses. I doubt more age will improve this, and it's good to drink now, but it's just not a wine of depth or breadth. Your non-wine friends will love it. (87-88)
