A solid serious Bordeaux red blend from cold climate Finger Lakes, New York. The color is a medium ruby. Aromas and flavors are showy but punchy with pretty intense plum, lemon juice, tart raspberry, pine and tobacco. Dry, twangy high acidity, medium but still pine-needled edgy tannins, mild alcohol, medium bodied. An young, edgy, bracing, food-ravenous red that begs for decanting, fat and protein. Very good. 2017-2025

Medium plus ruby core, short ruby clear rim. Heady, port-like aromas and flavors of black cherry liquor, blueberry jam, alcohol, burnt leaf, bourbon vanilla. Off dry, lowish acid, medium plump tannins, hot alcohol 16.9%. Full bodied. Long. Skip port, this is huge stuff. Still very Paso. Very good 4 of 5. Peaked, drink now and for five more years.

Magnum on New Year's Eve. It is a clear bright gold with a fine, rapid pearl. Aromas are mild and finely layered with notes of white pear, pummelo pith, clean light honey, and fresh raspberries. The palate is dry, with sneaky medium plus acidity, medium alcohol and a plump little medium minus body. Flavors finely layer themselves with delicate complexity, like a French pastry. White chocolate, white pear, grapefruit or pummelo pith, white melon, almonds, raspberries all present themsleves with a medium length.

Bara’s 2004 Brut is very good (4 of 5). It won’t own you or rock your world, but gently take you on lovely ride.

The color here is a clear but average intensity gold. The heavy, glazed legs flaunt a high alcohol. The rim becomes watery midway. The aromas are still in the works: young and mild, reminding me of honey, caramel, orange candies, even strawberry, with a slight cigarette edge from ten years of oak aging.

The structure is average, with enough bitterness, body, and alcoholic warmth to keep your attention. In retrospect, Aberlour seems a bit thin when compared to Macallan’s 10 Year. The flavors are delayed, with medium intensity roasted vanilla coffee creamer, orange sorbet, caramel, with a slight toffee spice that finishes the show, lingering for a medium length.

Aberlour’s 10 year was a wonderful first love. It was extremely smooth, with measured vanilla oak spice, bright fruit, and seeming sweetness. I stared at it endlessly, trying to tease out any deeper complexity. All I found was warm, simple, superficial delight. It’s a solid good: 3 out of 5 points.

It was visually clear, steely gold. The nose intense with yeast, mineral, vanilla. Dry. The acidity was moderately high, typical of Loire chenin blanc. The body was medium light. The palate carried green apple, soft white pear, brioche, mineral, lime, while strawberry and rhubarb squeaked in. Great drink, fresh, focused yet complex.

A great entry table red from Salina island. This is clear, medium intensity ruby. The nose has medium intensity of fresh red licorice, cherry, rhubarb pie, tomato, and hints of carob and ash. It's dry with medium levels of acid, tannin, body, alcohol, yet length is short. The flavors are red apple, tomato sauce, hints of vanilla and salt. All elements are in sync, forming a rhythm between fruit and spice, tannin, body, and acid, which keeps it living. It never jumps or jerks, just putters along like an old motor boat. It’s friendly, and charms without notice or effort. For more, see my blog http://waywardwine.wordpress.com/2012/01/30/nerello-mascalesenero-davola-hauner-salina-rosso-igt-italy-2009/

The bottle retains sauvignon blanc’s traditional varietal notes. Except for the nose, which was quiet considering such a typically aromatic grape. Nonetheless, it had all the expected cool climate high acidity, with grass, grapefruit and citrus flavors dominating. The body was far from thin, with a viscous richness. Mineral notes kept it interesting. Jamesport’s sauv blanc would snap to attention most lightly prepared white meats, salads or goat cheeses. In glass you’ll find an odd wine, nearly as confused as Crimea’s past. The bubbles meander. The nose reeks of confected icing, musk, licorice, even plastic. Yet on the palate it works. Sweetness and acidity fix each other from overbearing your senses. White pear and golden delicious apple dominate, with musk, nut and honey-like petrol carving niches for themselves. These flavors hang around for quite a while. FULL REVIEW: http://waywardwine.wordpress.com/2011/04/18/chardonnay-sevastopol-winery-krimskoye-semi-sweet-premium-crimean-white-champagne-nv/

Odd, jangly, juxtaposed flavors of breadbasket, honey, white grapes, nutmeg, turkish delight, light caramel. The drink is delicious. I love it. But this isn't a time machine. Midas Touch only holds up a mirror to our present tastes: but it’s like a shabby chic mirror at Pottery Barn: it looks old and French but was made last year in China, out of plastic.

There is little malolactic and even less butter to be found here. Instead, toasted almond and burnt vanilla take you into the woods. Burgundy was inspiration for the barrel. But here, Hamilton Russell’s chard tastes distinct: diametric edges of precise lemon, lime and asparagus cut against smoke, mineral and toasted nut. Golden delicious apple fills the core. The length is endless and saliva inducing. It begs for food. Roquefort cheese, fried tofu in hoisin sauce, grilled, even smoked salmon or duck would all mesh meaningfully with this wine. Best thirty bucks I’ve spent in a while. FULL REVIEW: http://waywardwine.wordpress.com/2011/07/11/chardonnay-hamilton-russell-walker-bay-south-africa-2008/

Warre’s LBV is a belly dancer: athletic yet alluring, its dark eyes dart at you but leave as quickly. Let this LBV lure you with woven notes of violets, blackberries and spice. The balance of body and brightness is pitch perfect. This is what so many wines want to be. Yet this LBV is far too complex for competition. It will wear away these last dreary nights of winter with its warm berried curves and spiced staccato dance. LBV means you can drink it now. But let it rest upright and then pour slowly: because Warre obsesses about not filtering or fining, there will be sediment. The intense fruit reflects the dominance of pinot but grass and lime are not far behind thanks to the chardonnay. The wine is aged for at least three years, providing the loud atolytic notes of bread and rich mouthfeel. To their credit, there is no malolactic creaminess, just clear cut acidity. You will need a soft creamy cheese or sauce to handle it, but once paired, the intense fruit, yeast and rustic aged notes will stand firm against most dishes. Triple Zéro tastes amazing. Between three tastings, it is refreshing, complex and unforgettable. Jacky Blot’s method-maniacal scrutiny and fanaticism with dryness come straight to the glass. The fruit is stellar. Drink it alone (or with friends). I respect this wine. Clearly Morocco can grow good fruit while caring for the environment. Graillot’s involvement is confident, playful, but not straining to impress anyone. His Syrocco shows off clean, modestly extracted cherry, tomato, and fig fruits. Acidity keeps this otherwise soft, ripe, modern wine in check. Oak merely tempers the hard edges and fringes them in spice. Syrocco is Rick’s Café Américain: an alcoholic sanctuary in an Arab world; familiar, comfortable but decorated with a mixed, interesting, and at times, dangerous clientele.

This drink echoes quietly beneath impossibly high vaults and domes, while providing them with tannic structure. Tart cranberry and cassis cast brightly through small windows, cutting up the dusty cedar to glint off mosaics of golden anise and glass. This wine is the Haggia Sophia. It seems hollow and light but is detailed and structured, begging closer inspection, balanced but on the verge of crumbling apart. The wine opens beautifully over an hour, rewarding patience. It will develop in years to come but I doubt the fruit will stick around. Food fills its vaults like a congregation. Patricia Wells has guided a delicious wine for sure. My problem is that it had to be. This is the self-fulfilling prophecy of modern wine. We increasingly squeeze grapes into what we expect good wine to taste like; removing stalks, gentle extraction, aging on lees, in casks for a year, et cetera. I love this wine. But I worry that I already had to.

Palmina’s nebbiolo is firmly Californian. Its ripeness, deep color, and alcohol reflect the climatic extremes of Santa Barbara. Yet this wine remains balanced. The Cliftons’ age their wine three years in large upright casks (grandi botti) of 3,500-7000 liters. This Italianate restraint lets the fruit do the talking. The walls of acidity and tannin will guide you through most meat and mushroom dishes (or a mild gorgonzola). Meanwhile, the viscous sweetness of the alcohol (molasses?) and ripe fruit (tart red cherry) fill its walls with pleasure. Characteristic fall leaf and cedar spice provide decoration for this Italian villa on California’s coast.

Caminade’s 2007 tastes modern, balanced and fruit driven. Plum and berries dominate. It lacks the traditional tannic edge or gaminess found in Cahors such as Clos la Coutale’s 2008. Sure, the wine tastes of earth and plum but its modernity lies in its cleanliness, in its the moderated tannins, acidity, body. It presents an ancient, disappearing grape, rich with earth, roasted mushroom, and warm fields of wheat. For a moment, you think that you’re in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator: running your hands through your harvest, wearing Roman armor everywhere, and being at one with your land. This is a great wine, that while trying to fabricate antiquity, ended up creating something that matters now. Its flavors of wheat and earth overlay plum and tart red fruit, all of which sing alongside spaghetti alla ciociara, mole sauce cheese enchiladas, or anything with a bit of herb, black pepper, lamb or anything delicious with dark or salty flavors, especially at under $15.

Once open, this wine doesn’t shut up. Like a teenager with ADD who hasn’t showered, Pelham’s baco is equal parts funk, fruit and nervous energy. It is dirty, spicy, yet edgy with high acid. The flavors are all over the place: with mulling spices, orange, red apple, and black pepper. Against patient parenting with oak barrels, Canada’s cold climate gives the grapes here their acidity and spice. Since I can’t disown it, I learn to like this problem child. The acid attack demands attention and cheese. Cheddar curds and olives curb it, but a fondu or Burgundy-friendly food (e.g. salmon) would sing it into submission.

2010′s Bastide Blanche is no pale reflection. It’s copper clarity glimmers. It’s nose rings with red fruits, wild strawberry, grapefruit. Behind these lurk bell pepper and roasted mushroom (classic Bandol brett.). Waves of tart strawberry, vanilla, ginger, spice, bell pepper and sea salt roll across the palate. Fruit dominates, but there is so much more in this sea.

Bastide Blanche offers a cheap ticket to the coast of Provence. Let the warm, relaxed tide draw you deeper to sea. Here, pink means neither sweet, light nor simple. Like most, this French rosé is reliably dry, medium bodied and food ready. Dip your feet, and summer’s heat will fade off. Dive in, and forget yourself. Forget your prejudice and assumptions about color. Redrink pink with an open mind and open glass.
