3/21/24, 9:49 PM - Thanks for the birth year treat! Agreed with Andrew, still found it very interesting.
2/17/24, 8:43 AM - Correct, slow ox'd in bottle (no decant). Cheers.
12/3/23, 12:26 PM - Try one again soon. I suppose it differs from producer to producer and perhaps appellation, but I'm generally not a big fan of 2013 vintage (same story with 2011). I've had some top bottlings of 13 from Barthod, Bertheau, Chevillon, Claude Dugat, Dugat-Py at 1er cru level just to name a few and the midpalate is very hollowed out on most of these wines. A year ago, I had the 13 Dujac Gevrey Combottes and the midpalate wasn't very compelling either. While the 13s can age, I don't think they will get better and you will end up with something that has most of the fruit stripped away.
11/8/23, 5:00 PM - Forgive me but I'm reading your note and it just doesn't match the score based on what you wrote - am I correct in reading the score for this wine as 86?
10/21/23, 4:01 PM - Appreciate your note. We followed this one over the course of the evening for several hours in the bottle ~5hrs perhaps next time I will decant. Having said that, I've had many vintages of Pepe going back to 1980. I've had the 80, 83, 85, 90, 91, 93, 94, 95, 97, 2000, 01, 03 - It's a wine I'm very familiar with. The 97 is probably the best bottle I've ever had. Besides that, the wines have never really done much for me. Would much rather drink Valentini for the prices that Pepe is going for.
12/8/22, 8:30 PM - Cheers gents! Yes, thanks MJReb - I'm aware that only Barthod's portion of Veroilles has 1er cru status. My first intro to Veroilles was with Bruno Clair so I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the more special designation with Barthod's Veroilles. Of course, Barthod's version is much more superior. Overall I'm loving the Barthod 13s. I have some 13 Cras and Gruenchers that I need to check on soon. Cheers again! :)
12/6/15, 7:10 PM - just drank this same exact bottle tonight and I agree with your note! cheers!
5/28/15, 3:09 PM - Thanks!
2/15/15, 11:38 AM - Good to know! Thanks for tracking down the information on this wine. A friend brought this over for dinner last night and it showed really well, we all were wondering if this estate was still in existence.
12/5/14, 4:00 PM - you bet, thanks!
6/20/14, 4:56 PM - I bought 3 of these from the K&L discounted offer. I've never tried Joly but heard the wines are great. Look forward to trying one and probably like you laying down the rest.
5/15/14, 9:14 AM - Yes, I agree 2-3 years should do the trick! cheers!
5/13/14, 9:36 PM - While I agree with you about the vintage, this was accessible enough for me to warrant a score. I personally agree with you that most 2005s are nowhere near ready especially when we consider a site like Malconsort. I've sacrificed 2005 malconsort from other producers like Montille, Bouchard, Potel over the past year or two that were truly inaccessible and didn't warrant scoring as yet. This Moillard is in the drinking phase, just not up to scratch to what I'm used to from this vineyard.
5/14/14, 9:35 AM - I would say 2009 would be ready much more earlier than 2005. My favorite vintage to drink now is 2007. You can still find them around too and they provide so much drinking pleasure. For Volnay, it will be down to the vineyard I usually find. Look to the vineyards mid to downslope for Volnay early drinking - Champans, Santenots, Brouillards, Mitans, Fremiets. Taillepieds, Clos de Chenes, Ducs and Angles usually need time in the bottle especially Taillepieds. I don't drink enough Pommard - the only bottles I usually get my hands on are Rugiens and Grands Epenots, the latter usually being quite accessible.
3/21/14, 10:38 AM - I fear the same as well. How long do you think these will sleep for? Haut Medoc always seem more austere than the other [left bank] classified growths.
3/6/14, 9:31 AM - I slow ox'd in bottle for about 3-4 hours prior and we drank over 2 days. I've had this wine many times on release when it was very good - if you see back in 2010 I gave the wine 94pts. I bought a half case directly from Failla when these came out back in Feb '10. I've heard from other drinkers in my wine tasting group that the wines just don't age very well. I hope for my sake that the wine is going through a phase but for my tastes and judgement I just can't see it getting better or aging gracefully. Cheers.
1/6/14, 7:42 PM - Yes Stefan, with some time it's possible it can fatten up. 2020 would be a good time to check back in, hopefully by then it will have put on some weight. The shape in the mouth is more narrow, and the midpalate is lean but I wouldn't say its weak. There is some good concentration of flavors in the leanness. It will be a beautiful wine if it can fill out the midpalate. The beauty for me is in the nose - reminds me of the 1990. Cheers!
12/17/13, 10:19 AM - so happy to see this note. i plan on popping my '79 over the Christmas break for a Bdx dinner. cheers!
11/24/13, 4:45 PM - Thanks and I hope you enjoy your magnum. cheers!
10/21/13, 10:25 PM - @dsgris you're in for a treat with the 2008! The 2008 is a completely different wine as the assemblage has different varietal makeup. The 2007 is a GSM blend with 92%syrah the rest Mourvèdre and Grenache while 2008 is GSM + Viognier. The Viognier punches up the aromas as well as the acidity (which I like) and makes the syrah show more Northern Rhone characteristics such as wild game, bacon and other savory flavors.
9/11/13, 3:57 PM - one of the funniest TNs i've read on here! will have to seek out this bottle after reading a TN like that. cheers! Matt from Seattle.
9/9/13, 10:42 PM - Tasted this at their tasting room in walla walla labor day weekend - was hugely impressed. Cheers!
3/14/13, 4:32 PM - I have a bottle of this and I'm tempted to open it - thoughts on approachability/drinking window??
3/18/13, 11:54 AM - Cheers and thanks for the note. Agreed that Les Saint-Georges is a very fine vineyard. Funny you mentioned the Grand Cru bit - because I met some producers at a tasting event last year ( Lécheneaut - based in NSG) and they did in-fact state that Les Saint-George is in the process of being promoted/become the first Grand Cru vineyard in NSG.
3/10/13, 5:59 PM - Had this with dinner last night too. I concur! Incredible how well this drinks for its young age.
2/26/13, 2:48 PM - I'm certainly a big fan of the mourvedre peppery bacon spice too! Could you recommend some vintages of Pegau that are drinking very well right now? I was looking at 2003 but I heard they still need more time. Perhaps '98?
12/3/12, 10:51 PM - 2004 - too many landmines for burgundy!
11/29/12, 2:28 PM - for the money, these are unbeatable.
11/13/12, 6:25 PM - Just starting to get into Long Shadows - where's the tasting room in woodinville - are they located in school or warehouse district?
11/14/12, 4:29 PM - Thanks for the info & cheers! I taste @ darby all the time so will def look them up when i'm out there next time.
12/15/11, 3:25 PM - I agree. this is my favorite winery in WA!
