Totally maderised. Yuk!

12/16/23, 11:17 AM - In bond professional storage since purchase on release, so no issues there. This isn’t the first Produttori that has badly suffered with age and is one of many, many Italian wines that have rapidly deteriorated after being laid down.

Same as before though maybe settling down. Still a bit of Brett but less than before I recall. Lovely. Leave for another 3-5

Nose pretty faint, some roasted hazelnuts cured meat, leather and mint. Palate is soft, a little fabby and quite tired. This one very much over the hill I’m afraid.

12/8/20, 12:25 AM - It’s very nice. Lot of quality here. Just very far down the slope for its age.

Stored at WineSoc since release, so no storage issues...

2004 Château Batailley Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend
13% alcohol. CS 70%, M 25%, CF 3%, PV 2% according to some source on the web , so no guarantee. Good cork, not that long, but no wine penetration. Decanted a good hour ahead.
The colour is dark, with minimal signs of ageing at the edge of the rim.
Superb lively noise, with ripe berries and some leather. The oak is subdued, as it should. Equally harmonious mouth, with a winning juicy quality and good balancing acidity. A sense of plenitude without any undue opulence; in a word, classy.
Much better than what the reputation of the vintage or the pedigree of the chateau would lead you to expect, and superb value for money. One of my best Bordeaux this year.
Apparently, this delicious wine was awarded a score of 85-88 by the unfortunate Mr. Suckling in the April 05 issue of the Wine Spectator, which just goes to show how reliable his opinion is (for my palate at any rate). By contrast, J-M Quarin was really spot on with his note and score, as he often is.

9/23/20, 5:14 AM - Well, for my money, Mr Sucking is one of the most reliable and consistent reviewers out there - if he fails to see any great appeal in a wine, it is almost certainly worth purchasing. And vice versa!

Pleased the '04 worked out for you. Was a bit flat when I had it but I have 2 left and am thinking of revisiting...

Explosively feminine blasts of Asian spice, intoxicating cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol and green pepper. All perfectly balanced and utterly delicious. Absolutely singing after a decent decant - very much looking forward to the next one. 96

This appeals to every bone in a buttoned up, repressed, public-school-educated Englishman's body.

It embraces like a well worn chesterfield. It entices and then reprimands, as if to say: 'for god's sake stop having so much fun'.

Elegant and unpretentious.

In short I could dispose of gallons of the stuff with red meat and french(!) fries.

Rich black fruit, with a leafy Cabernet finish, this is very ripe and clearly seen a lot of sun. It is still fresh with gentle but moderately close tannin. Clearly a different breed to a Bordeaux but I like what it is and it is pretty decent value. 90

Grassy, herbaceous and aromatic cedary claret, beautiful weight and refined finish. This has aged very, very well as Poujeaux tends to do. Surely, this wine is in the top tier of age-worthy, classic clarets of real value? 93

6/11/17, 1:44 AM - A very difficult question to answer; this is drinking beautifully now. If I had more I couldn't resist a few more nibbles. It could easily sit for a while longer I think, but why wait!

I've had several of these and I really wish I'd bought more. Ok, it's not the most refined or complex Bordeaux (it is 100% merlot) but there is lovely chocolatey, toasty black fruit along with some really quite punchy acidity and reassuring puckering tannin. A great deal for the money and one of those wines that one always snatches out of the rack on a Thursday night. 90
  • Dj6544 commented:

5/13/16, 11:52 PM - Touché! Although not quite in the same price bracket! But as good as any £10 Merlot I've had, certainly from Bordeaux. Though I don't come across many - any recommendations?
