Blackberry profile with licorish and sagebrush. On the palate it is plummy, with some astringency and thick tannins but not unpleasant. It’s a value wine but with a pleasing profile. Drink with rich and spicy foods and you’ll be glad.

This is an exceptional Barolo. It has a huge bouquet of flowers, sweet spices and truffles. The body has intense and vibrant macerated red fruits with huge yet round polished tannins. This wine is for the long haul but if you must, and we did, can be drunk now and enjoyed plenty. Un grande lavoro!

This Grand cru is still a baby but does it show its potential. The bouquet is heavenly with notes of fresh flowers, sweet currants, tinged of mushroom, leather, a bit of nutmeg so on and on. The body is supple and fleshy with plenty of tannins to last a lifetime. Exceptional wine and if you have it please treasure it in your cellar for at least another 10 years.

Lighter than the Colson Canyon but with more body than the BMTs, this Syrah is dark brooding and racy with plenty of wild fruit characteristics. Always enjoyable from Tensley - one of the best producers out there.

Tensley styles dark fruits and deep colors with racy spicy characters. Somewhat abrasive at times but in any event a good everyday Syrah that pairs well with intense foods.

Fruit forward and racy but with solid mid palate which is always outperforms the more singular Syrahs. Not as good as Colson but a very close second.

Very nice intense bouquet of blackberries and blueberries. More effusive than the usual Napa Cab at this price range with solid mid palate and medium finish. This could be a good value for an aromatic Cab.

2001 Penfolds Grange South Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah (view label images)
SobeWFF. My first experience with Grange and it’s definitely a must have if you can afford it. 100% American oak. Grange brings a sweet and racy dark fruits sprinkled with a dusty salinity that is extremely rewarding and refreshing at the same time. This 2001 is aging well with tertiary flavors of dried herbs and smoked meats, and a port-like disposition coming along and a Bourbon-like tinge of sweet must. The palate is fat and I mean it in a good way, chewy fatty tannins that are sweet and a joy to have. This is a generational wine for your grandkids - superb.

SobeWFF. 100% Barossa fruit and modern style in 70-80% new French oak. RWT stands for real wine making trial. Very smooth tannins coming off the French oak with a bit of buttered lactic notes picked from it being new. It is begins to enter a port-like phase on the nose however the fruit is still fresh and racy dark berries.

SobeWFF. Matured in 70-80% new French oak and all fruit sourced from West Barossa. It has a sweet floral bouquet with dark cool racy black fruits on the palate. The tannins are chewy but smooth and has a tinge of salinity also found in the Grange. This is a force to be reckoned with, we will see if the fruit integrates well with the new oak down the line.

SobeWFF. Spends 12 months in large vats. Fruit is sourced from Barossa and McLaren but this year includes Adelaide Hills. 96/7 Shiraz Cab mix. The cooler Adelaide Hills fruit shines through on the bouquet with a floral fresh racy berries. Thick chewy tannins on the palate with hints of espresso and black pepper. Quite similar to Central coast CA Syrah.

Blackberries, leather and medium rare meat with some white pepper notes intermixed with flower notes. Very bold and muscular typical of premium valley floor fruit. The finish is medium and could use a little more length but hey I’m not complaining.

Pitch black color with a dark garnet edge. Dark fruits with mild graphite and some lactic notes from the new oak. Fleshy palate with thick but pasty tannins, classic mouthwatering acidity with spicy black fruits with some oak char. Long finish with austere fruit and oak. Reminds one of why this estate makes such time worthy wines.

Fruit forward Syrah from a good site in Sta Rita Hills. Black fruits with black tea, sandalwood, and a chalky minerality shine through in this wine which was aged in neutral oak. Very similar to the Sebastiano, however a slight pinch inferior.

Very young with a bouquet reminiscent of Colson canyon however the wine is lighter in style perhaps due to the 25% Grenache on the mix. It's light and enjoyable but not the two-puncher I've come to prefer from Tensley.

Bricking color on the edges, cork broke in half. However the proof is in the pudding: excellent aged cigar, dried fruits, mushrooms and library case. Smooth kiss of fruit on the palate with tense acidity and velvety resolves tannins. This wine can continue forever as have been my experiences with this great winery.

Incredible. This is one of the best offerings in Napa period. Great purity of fruit with boysenberries and blue berries and in the palate everything so harmonious with blackberry jam and well integrated oak. The tannins are there but are sweet and unobtrusive. Excellent beyond excellent right now in its youth extremely fruit forward, over time it will age into a beauty.

Gold yellow color intensely higher than the usual Chards. Bouquet and palate exude yellow fruits, crushed rocks, vanilla and new oak, creme brûlée, key lime with graham crackers finish. This is worth seeking...

Tannin to fruit ratio is heavy on this one however it is still holding together, perhaps for no more than 5 years. Left bank typicity with some granite and dried herbs and some wood notes at the end. Not bad, went well with lunch however not the quality you’d expect from this estate on a better year.

Appears to be slightly past it’s drinking age. Could be bottle variation or that this bottle was mishandled at some point of transport. Fruit was somewhat stewed and raisiny with a noticeable aging and tiresome palate. The other bottle I had a few months ago seemed excellent but this one disappointed a bit.

WOTN - this Cab from Spring Mountain is top notch and a great value. It offers intoxicating aromas of pure red and blue fruits with notes of forest spices, lavender, and lilac. The palate is silky smooth with nicely integrated new oak. It’s harmonious and well balanced. I think it gives its neighbor Lokoya (5x the price) a run for its money.
