Still surprisingly fresh. Not a big wine but well made. Of the Musars I've tasted recently — 1998, 2002 and 2005 — this is the best.

(10/31/2022) Fully mature but not over the hill. Terrific stuff!

Very nice garnet coloring, immediate burst of fruit smell on the pour into the decanter. Some sediment in bottle. Did not rest long prior to first pour. On the nose, tobacco, cherry, leather, wood shop type of smell. On the tongue Very smooth with some tannin remaining, acidity, black cherry, with long duration.

Originally tasted at Chateau Montelena and had to come home with this bottle. Absolutely fantastic wine. Not pairing with anything, just purely enjoying as a birthday gift to myself.

Splash double decant. Deep dark ruby magenta color. Strawberry, black cherry, rich elder flower, white pepper, minty chocolate, raspberry, freshly cut cucumber, and subtle coconut on the complex nose. Smooth, dry, slightly spicy palate. Firm, full, lower intensity tannins on the medium long finish.

Fun, unique Spanish red blend. It’s a Spanish CdP in a sense. Got this as part of Maggie Harrison’s “the Collective” wine club (one ~ $100 bottle per month from around the world). It’s my little continuing education.

The 2019 Caterwaul Cabernet is off to good start. It starts off with a tempting, dark, purple color that trend to a translucent violet radiance in the glass. On the palate, black and blueberry fruit, dark currants and plum flavors that are nicely extracted. There is also a touch of leather some tannins. If this entry level cab shows this well, I can only imagine how much better their high end Cabs might be, they may definitely be worth my investigation. Give this bottle some air and it will perform nicely. BTW: If what I have tasted so far for this vintage is any indication, Cali Cab lovers are instore for a very satisfying year with wines that are bold, nicely balanced with good extraction and flavors. This is a good wine that is reasonably priced. 93+/94 Points.

8/13/21, 1:17 PM - I have some on order through First Bottle. Too hot to ship to Texas right now so I’m waiting patiently. Can’t wait to try. I just found some 2018s locally and will be trying those soon. Great review.

Inky dark ruby color. Powerful and intoxicating aroma of dried black fruits, lavender, wet forest floor, vanilla and tobacco. Dry, smooth acidity, chocolate velvet tannins, on palate dried blackcurrant, black cherry, chocolate, black tea and graphite. Full and lush body. Great balance. Lingering finish. If I had to fault it, it would be that it’s got that bit more punch than finesse.
  • winecadence commented:

2/11/21, 9:02 AM - Do you think that punch will mellow with more time?

Nose of purple fruits and cedar. On the palate, red fruits, cassis, cedar and some balsa wood. Medium bodies with nice acidity; tannins are fine grained and add some interest. With air a pleasant green herbal note appears, that seems most prominent on the finish. Drinking well today, but would benefit from more time. Better in 5 years.

This second wine is more enjoyable for my palate than most Napa Cabs at twice the price. A good food wine and a great QPR for a mountain Cabernet.
  • winecadence commented:

2/8/21, 1:44 PM - This is one of my favorite producers. I completely agree that this second label is fantastic. Plus it comes with a great QPR.

This was singing from the get go. Plums and dark cherries, and some meat - I could sniff this forever. A very balanced And layered wine. Tannins were present yet unobtrusive, lovely mouthfeel and buffered by a good lick of acid. Think this can last for another decade, easily.

2016 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Nebbiolo
4/26/2020 - Alexander Smith Likes this wine:

This is by far the best vintage of Produttori I have drank. When you look at the price compared to certain other labels which might be 4-5x the price, it makes you stop and think. Aromas of crushed red berries, dark cherries, crushed rose petals, fresh earth, wild herbs, and sweet spices. The palate was fresh and rich, with surprisingly finely grained tannins, the mid-palate was well defined along with good fruit quality and density. This definition did not drop towards the finish which I noted a little short for now, however, this will all come together and has a long future ahead of it. Compared to the 2015 this clearly is a step above, with better quality tannins, fruit and structure. So approachable now but wait. I am very excited about the 2016s and this is a real star of the vintage. Buying a case! 94+

At current stage, this is primary, four square, lean, and grippy. Even after a 1 hour decant, not much change. I will hold my remaining bottles for another 3-5 years before revisiting. I think it will put on weight and become more interesting with bottle age.
  • winecadence commented:

3/25/20, 5:06 PM - I opened this bottle this week and had very similar thoughts. Agree on waiting 3-5 years before trying again. There is structure that suggests it could improve.

ACORN has been sending me samples now for a bit, and I have always been impressed with their wines. But. I had never visited the winery, which makes me loathe to write about the wine in any detail. That all changed this summer. I will write more about that visit soon, but suffice it to say that Betsy and Bill Nachbaur are delightful. And I love their wines. This Dolcetto took a while to open up, but when it did? Oh boy. Fruity, tart, on the verge of exquisite. This does not cause one to reminisce about a Dolcetto from Piedmont, but it will make you want to explore them. thedrunkencyclist.com

Chocholate, smoke and tabac. Plum, hint of vanille, van cherry. Smooth and very fruity entry. Mid palate adds texture and pleasantly chewy tannins. Rich and plummy, Long, nice acid which lends itself to a nice meal.
Plenty of life and development to be had, drink by 2023?
Bringing back lovely memories of our tour and visit at the domaine, thanks Mario!

P: MF body; Rndish entry with SWTISH frt (almost certainly threshold R.S.) met by balancing acidity & a VERY slight pucker that fairly seamlessly morphs into a LONG, very, VERY slightly bitterswt finish with very, VERY fine tannins. While setting this down until late Winter/mid Summer '18 MIGHT improve it, I'd be leery of holding it beyond '20. Poor QPR (IMHO), literally SCORES of vendors seeming to sell it for ~ $75. 94 pts WA. 14.8% ABV

I have been honored to share with others, many bottles of the great Caymus Special Reserve 1990, and Latour 1982. These wines were criticized in their youth as being "too fruity". I have enjoyed a few bottles of intense Belle Gloss. This wine, however, is definitely a disgrace to the family. It is only appropriate for pancakes. Five years from now, thirty years from now, it will only be for pancakes. Much better to invest in Vermont maple syrup. If you think this is Cabernet, you are the victim
of fake news.

Lovely big fruit forward new world cab. Poured at a party along side a 2004 Honig Campbell vineyard cab for a side by side compare. Everyone loved the wine. about half preferred the softer older 2004 cab but those that loved this cab REALLY loved it. I find Altamura never disappoints.

This wine turned in a really nice performance last night as it paired with a small filet roast done on the grill w/asparagus. I was impressed as to how accessible it was after only an hour in the decanter. This is a trend in wine-making to make a wine drinkable without the years in the cellar and in this case they pulled it off with a wonderful balance of ripe fruit, spices and a bit of leather. This was so good that I ran out today to get (3) more bottles from Costco, a steal at $73 for a high quality Napa Cab that drinks like a $150+ bottle.
  • winecadence commented:

5/7/17, 8:40 PM - I wish my Costco carried this wine. So far no sign of it there.
