Rich berries, tar, and anise. This has taken on a soft leathery quality with age, which adds some elegance. Tannins are soft, but still provide good structure.

Varietal smokiness is evident. Some initial stewed fruit, but not as much as some may fear. Cola, raspberries, leather, good acidity, and fine tannins. Needs to breathe for a bit. A hint of anise develops late. Lovely.

This was not a subtle wine. There were obvious notes of tomatoes and reduced, almost syrupy, red fruit. Hints of leather and cola, along with some fine tannins, did provide just a bit of balance.
