3 hr decant didn’t help. Started bad, never got good. Disjointed with some weird fruit/prune thing going on. Sorry, I know the Washington people adore this place, for the price of this, I can name 20 better French wines. Honestly this is making me rethink being on their mailing list.

Update: I poured a small glass just now, bottle open for 18 hrs. It is still not doing it for me. Prunes, with alcohol on the nose. Tastes hot, as in I can taste the alcohol on it. Says 14.4 by volume on the bottle, I know that is a moving target.

The wine was mature but absolutely delicious. However, the cork was in bad shape. I have another bottle of this and observe that its cork seems to be having problems. Probably should consider drinking up remaining bottles for that reason.

5/13/22, 6:03 PM - I have had a couple of these that have leaked, but all have been in pretty good shape. I wouldn’t necessarily rush the other bottle, but agree it is drinking beautifully now.

Note: I use the recommended scale for ratings.

This was an odd/unusual bottle.
The cork disintegrated totally upon opening. Not into pieces, but almost into dust.
Not a good sign. Nevertheless, the first sips did not suggest the wine had turned.
Somehow, the cork had done its job.

I emptied the bottle into a decanter filtering it through a simple kitchen strainer/sieve.
Repeated process. This got rid of much, but not all, of the debris.

After 1-2 hours in a carafe with a large bottom the wine opened up nicely.
Not on the lighter side, but not too powerful.

I have a few more, and I will decant earlier, at least two hours.

1/8/22, 3:15 PM - I had a case of this and every single cork has been totally dried out and disintegrated upon opening. Seems like bad cork for the entire bottling. Wine has been fine, but not exceptional.

This is mature with well-integrated tannins and somewhat understated fruit. Notes of olives, herbs, and the unmistakable minerality and slightly funky signature of Pegau. Barnyard note is definitely subtle here, unlike the almost undrinkable 2008. Good, but not approaching the complexity or length of the best vintages. And not a great value vintage at $75 at release.

12/22/20, 8:41 PM - 2006 and 2007 are drinking better than the 2005 right now in my opinion. 2000 has been great in the past, but may be over the hill. 2011 about the same as 05, but younger and less tannic. 2009 is a bit inconsistent in my experience and 2008 is awful. Never had the 1999, 2001, 2003, or 2004. 2001 might be the pick there. Wouldn’t touch 2010 yet, but should be good.

As with the Cayuse, I'm finding that this style is not really my cup of tea. Complex? - yes. Lots of interesting aromatic notes to ponder - olive, tar, earth, licorice. However there is always a little baby poopie diaper that I just cannot get past. Palate is medium and somehow a little hard. long finish but I'm not sure that's what I want. So yes...complex but I can have about one glass before I'm ready to move on. Sorry if others disagree.
  • Matt T commented:

6/28/20, 3:43 PM - If is not your style, I wouldn’t bother to score it.

My second bottle of this was undrinkable...tasted like straight fermented raisins. Truly disgusting.

I’m going to hope this bottle was flawed in some way.

Tasted 2012 @ H&H in Camara de Lobos , This is in my top 5 wines ever tasted. What made it our favourit wine of the quartet was the way a small pour in the morning stayed with us all day. Late Mr. John Cossart Junior told us he had the quartet traced to being pre 1725 wines.
  • Matt T commented:

    11/13/18, 12:10 PM - Special note. Pre-1825, I think. I don’t think there is any early 18th century Madeira.

Failed to identify this as left bank Bordeaux. Rather pale character. However, enjoyed it pretty well. Probably this was even more food friendly than really classic left bank claret with its well known long and sweet aftertaste. And, of course, especially good for those who like the word "Rothschild" on their bottles...
  • Matt T commented:

8/12/18, 6:18 AM - This stands on its own as a very nice bottle for the money. I don’t think very many people are drinking the label here at $30-40.

This was in great condition with fill into the neck. Lovely dark red with just a tinge of fading on the rim. Outstanding nose of flowers, cherries, and leather. Opened up after about an hour and softened a great deal after a day (although I preferred day one). A lot of different things going on here with soil, fruit and flowers. A bit acidic on the finish, otherwise I would have rated this even higher. Definitely at peak or just past it, so I would drink up.
  • Matt T commented:

4/9/18, 7:20 AM - I tried it both ways and think the relatively high acid goes better with (Italian) food.

Basic, Bordeaux table wine. Somewhat earthy and tannic, but opened after a few hours with some red and black fruit. Short on the finish. Lacking depth and complexity. Not anywhere close to the (supposed-as indicated by a sticker) 90 point score given by RP.
  • Matt T commented:

7/8/17, 6:00 AM - This had a RP 90 point sticker on it. Could have been false advertising.

Rich complex nose.

Palate is very nice. Very full bodied and tannic. Subtle earthy flavors and dark fruits well interwoven. Needs to age quite a bit I'd say.
  • Matt T commented:

3/29/17, 10:53 AM - You may want to review your score. 83 is not very good.

Whenever I leave town, my wife seems to gravitate towards opening Turley Petite Sirahs. This is the second incident involving premature opening of a Turley Petite in a few months and I will have to resort to hiding the rest to avoid another mistake.

Great structure and complexity, but not nearly ready. Needs at least another three years.
  • Matt T commented:
