Red
1999 Chateau Musar Bekaa Valley Red Blend
It's been a while since the previous dive into the Musar land, way too long actually. Surprisingly clean bouquet, tempting but raises concerns - is this Musar enough? The palate reveals that it is. Uniquely lovely and elegant, slightly sweet, lingonberry and cassis flavors, minerals, luxurious exotic spices and more. Clean and pure but hints of funk, nail polish, wet dog and pea pod - all necessary Musar elements. Fresh acidity and mouthwatering longish finish. Super-good bottle and an excellent vintage. Damn the torpedoes, I am moving to Bekaa Valley and live happily ever after.

9/8/23, 10:30 AM - Thank you Mr Harley.

Red
2003 Château Lascombes Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend
11/26/2021 - Lype Likes this wine:
Powerful dark toned nose with cassis scents. The palate is rich and full, ripe fruit is at the forefront but no cooked vintage 2003 feel whatsoever. Predominant cassis supplemented by spicy fragrancy, rosy flauvors, pipe tobacco, leather and more. I like the way the palate is rich with fruit but the sour tones are a bit of a let down in the otherwise attractive package, could be a bottle thing, though. Tannins are still there but there is enough fruit and acidity to make this pleasant. Not the most sophisticated presentation but enjoyable in a way which exceeds the vintage by miles.

3/6/22, 12:19 AM - Thank you Matt, that was very well put, I agree with you.

I agree with the Knowers who have educated that the warm, and sometimes overlooked, vintage 2003 produced a number successful Bordeaux-wines. The recently tasted Sociando Mallet and Clos Fourtet (and Lascombes) 2003 from this vintage were great and ready to go.

Red
1999 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Shy nose with cab. sav. features. The palate is a fairly tight package, fruit is not ripe and wide, nothing like recently tasted Robert Craig cab. sav. Mt. Veeder or Etude cab. sav. of the same vintage, instead the expression is focused and firm, dark cassis fruit, graphite, anise, hints of violets, cedar and a bit salty feel. Good fresh acidity and resolved but still present tannins complement the quite harmonious set-up. The finish is long and gum drying. This is very enjoyable and drinking well now, no need to rush though.

2/11/22, 10:20 AM - Thank you seijaro for your comment, I see you point (no pun intended). I rate this 90-91 p.

Red
2003 Château Sociando-Mallet Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend
Promisingly open bouquet of clean earth and red fruit, the mouthwatering palate is filled with ripe fruit but no overripe cooked feel, rich round flauvors of cassis, plums, hints of tobacco, green tones you might get in Sociando, clean dark earth. Presence of purple fruit which adds a slight Right Bank feel. Tannins and acidity support the ample fruit component and make this nicely harmonious. An exceptionally good 2003 Left Banker which is now on the top of its game.

1/28/22, 11:51 PM - Thank you for asking and thank you for your great reviews on CT. I could go for 91 points here. If you went above that, it probably would be the nice company and dinner one is enjoying (or it is very late in the evening and there are many open bottles). One of the best features of the 2003 SM is that it is drinking so well now that there is no need to contemplate is this too early or I am late and missed something.

White
2018 Mullineux Old Vines White Swartland White Blend
Youthful, floral and fruity nose, the palate is fresh with youthful tropical fruit, citrus flauvors, minerality and hints of smoke, a bit waxy mouthfeel, good crisp acidity. This is still a fairly tight package which is quite good now but more about future promise. Another a strong vintage for this wine.

8/14/20, 12:46 PM - Yes exactly, this will be even more rewarding after a couple years of cellaring, not to mention the Granite Chenin Blanc 2018, which is good now but I won't rush with my magnum bottle of the GCB.

White
2001 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia White Blend
Youthful a bit resinous oxidised nose which gives the impression of a young but promising wine, the palate is tightly knit, profound and full of future promise, a dense and complex package of resin, peach, citrus tones, almonds, nuts, apricot and more, oily and savoury, the usual suspects oak, vanilla, fudge and hints of iron are there but deeply buried underneath the bone dry fruit component. Quite enjoyable now but - despite the age of 19 years - the best years are clearly yet to come. Also the firm acidity reveals that this vintage has a long future ahead. The excellent vintages -04 and -05 are really good and drinking well now but the unbelievable -01 is still at the beginning of its drinking curve and in a class of its own, maybe even reminiscent of a good vintage of Blanco Gran Reserva. I will wait several years before opening the next bottle.

    8/7/20, 1:16 PM - I fully agree, in 2029 I will open Blanco GR 1994, 1996 and Reserva 2001.

Red
1997 Gravner Rujno Venezia Giulia IGT Red Bordeaux Blend

A dense wine, dark berries, dry fruit, a bit restrained, elegant and intense at the same time, nice acidity and balance. A quality wine.

4/29/19, 10:13 PM - I have one bottle left too. In my mind fruit in the 1997 has started to dry and I will consume my own bottle soon. Back in the day the vintage 1997 was highly acclaimed in many regions in Italy and one still has to pay a premium for this vintage. However, I am not sure if Italian 1997 reds have stood the test of time, at least for some producers fruit is starting to dry/fade and this also the case for the Rujno.

This is off topic by for example I would not buy Ornellaia 1997, I would go for the 1998 instead which I find better. Further, the few Italian white wines from 1997 I have been lucky to test have been excellent, too bad they are hard to find these days.

White - Sparkling
1997 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Champagne Blend

Ripe fruit, attractive, a bit softer and mo approachable than the tight -00.

12/6/18, 12:17 PM - Hi, thank you for contacting me. This is such a good vintage champagne that it requires a lot of age, especially if one likes aged champagne (apparently we both do). I tasted the -97 in 2012 so it has evolved from that but I am not sure if it delivers its best yet. If you happen to have several bottles, it might be worthwhile to give it a try but if you've got only one bottle, I would probably wait. Further, I transferring my hand written notes to CT so my notes are not that accurate, sorry.
