1997 Dow Porto Vintage Port Blend
Magnificent Port, still young and fruity, yet fresh, soft tannins, well-balanced sweetness. A great port now, capable of ageing if you have more bottles, this was my first, last and only.

4/29/24, 4:36 AM - I don't regret opening this one now, it is perfectly good to go. Besides, I have more bottles of the excellent 1994 vintage, so no problem finding an old vintage port ;<)

A very odd thing happened...went to take what I thought were my last two bottles of the 2017 from the cellar, to find that what was there was these 2 bottles of 2012 that I have no record of (and no 2017s). Have I drunk 4 bottles of 2017 not noticing that it was actually 2012? If not where did these come from? Anyway, delicious steely, classic Alsatian Riesling. Now the question is whether my previous notes for the 2017 are really for the 2012?!

I had higher hopes for this. I'll admit, I was swooned into buying one to try because of the cool old-style label but also because of Envoyer's tasting note for it. 100yr old vines was intriguing! As someone else noted it lacked some expected intensity and complexity. A very solid $10-$15 rose' I paid $26 for. If I had loved the wine, the btl might have made it on cool wine btl shelf:).

3/28/24, 4:39 AM - I'm afraid you did not get a good deal. I bought a sixpack at 12,99 € / bottle, around 13-14 $. And I am happy with the QPR, having tried one bottle. Not in a hurry, this rosé wine can actually age a bit.

This cork was grey on top but dry. Still I didn’t care for the taste. Too much apple and sweeter than expected

Deep ruby red colour. Blackcurrant, black cherries, blackberries, oak, black pepper and chocolate on the nose. Taste of blackcurrant, black cherries, oak, leather, black pepper, chocolate and leather with hints of tobacco. Long and dry finish with hints of leather, black pepper and tobacco. A good Saint-Émilion that should rest in the cellar for at least a couple of years more. Goes well with cheeses, beef and lamb.

Last bottle of six. Still a bit simple. Never lived up to the reputation of the winery. Not bad, just not exciting.
  • roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com commented:

9/22/23, 9:13 AM - I drank it over several days (not decanted); never got to the point of being excited by this bottle (neither by the 5 preceding bottles of the same wine).

The overtly oaky character has receded somewhat. The (red) fruit is open and inviting on the nose and the attack. I care less for the finish, I find it a bit soupy, a touch of heat, lacks definition.

K&L Winter Loire Tasting (K&L Hollywood): I tried this twice, once from a bottle that had been open for about 2 hrs, and once from a btl that had been open for 4 days(!). I know I have heard Joly asserts that with the Coulee de Serrant that you can open it and then start drinking it 4 days later, but I always found this fanciful, and perhaps apocryphal. Here was an opportunity to test it.

Freshly opened bottle: Yum, maybe the best young Vieux Clos I've had. Wooly/lanolin and restrained oxidative character on the nose; very viscous on the palate (15% ABV). Great acidity and very dense with a solid citrus core mixed with a hint of nuts. A touch of heat on the finish, which is very rich and enveloping.

4-day open bottle: What? This shows **less** oxidative character than the bottle that was freshly opened. Maybe bottle variation, but while this still has the citrus core on the palate, an intense stoniness comes out. Just a stunning bottle of wine.

This is an easy drinking village burgundy, leans to the feminine side. I'm assuming the high scores (93?!) are from people who work for the producer.

dark ruby color with long legs - nose fruity with mongolian cherries - flavor with graphite and wet leaves - very smooth and long finish

Red
2001 Château Montus Madiran Tannat Blend, Tannat
Still almost black. Lacks the sweet, fruity dimension of the "Cuvée prestige", but nevertheless very nice. Nose with ink, paprika, herbs. Smooth attack, broad taste with plenty tannins left in the finish. Good balance, will age a bit further but with a slight risk that it dries out. So I'll be drinking more of these, as I have most of a case left.
  • roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com commented:

8/20/14, 1:19 PM - I think this wine will always be somewhat austere, however long you wait. That is my experience with Montus 1995 as well. You may try to outlive the tannins, but you'll probably end up with a completely dried-up wine. IMHO, drink this winter, well-decanted and with proper winter-comfort-food of the fattish kind. You know, French south-west= ducks, foie gras, cassoulet etc.
