Day 1: What an interesting wine. Gravel, funk, blue currants, spices, menthol, floral and stone. Super complex wine and tasty. While young still drinkable. After selling out the 15 with my reviews I better get a six pack of these. 93 points

2/16/24, 2:52 PM - I’m convinced that the ROC wine club is *the best* in the country. Free shipping on everything?? I just loaded up on 4 of these clarets in the Valentine’s sale for $25/btl shipped including tax! That’s just crazy good. Enjoy your reviews…

Day 1: Going to order a case of this wine. Enough said.
Day 2: Gorgeous wine featuring black pepper, black olives, dust, floral, dark fruits and spices. Medium to long finish. Just amazing stuff. 93+ points
Day 3: This is why I do the 3 day wine review and love the doubters that say the wine is not fresh on day 3. Sure for cheap wines you are right but those wines are worth drinking anyway. This is wine of the year candidate and possibly the best of the Unnamed Series Syrah wines. Super complex featuring black olives, mild smoke, tar, black pepper, dark berries, earth, leather and exotic spices. For under $25.00 not many I have ever tasted at this level and that is over 25 years of great closeout deals thrown in there. 95+ points
Recommendation: Buy a case and thank 3 Day Wine Review Later.

11/17/23, 8:55 AM - I’ve been stocking up on the 2017 Unnamed Syrah. Do you think skip ahead next to the 2021? Agree about the crazy value- best club ever, free shipping all the time and a club price of $23 ish per bottle?

Unlike buying enough of the Davenport wines for myself I am stocking up on this wine for long term and short term enjoyment. Amazing on day 2 and needed that to open.
Green olives, black pepper, dark fruits, soy, stone and floral notes. The complexity of this wine for the money as many times stated is off the charts. Amazing effort and the best wine I have tasted at $25 or under in my wine career. 95 points

Day 1: Very nice and great value. Blue fruits, iron, black olives, tar, white pepper, spices and floral notes. Expressive wine and certainly delivers in all areas and for the money not much better. 93 points
Day 2: Very similar to day 1 result. Nice fruit combined with that classic black olive, iron, pepper and floral notes. Medium plus finish. Excellent. 93 points
Recommendation: These are still available at the winery. That is truly amazing they have not sold out of the 17.

3/18/23, 4:02 PM - Bought a split 17/18 case a while ago that we went though quickly and then just bought another case of the 17 last week. Couldn’t agree more about these wines, hoping that next year I can still get a case of the 18! (or the 17 if still available)

This is such a disappointment. I love Turley (typically) but this is just not great. The nose is somewhere between burning fiberglass and dead fish--not literally, but it is repulsive. That's the worst part. It finishes like a Zinfandel that was left open for a week. It's just not great. Luckily, I only have 6 more bottles of this and it will get used for big events if we ever get to have those again. I'm not even going to cook with this. Why ruin decent food with a bad wine? Maybe it will settle out in a decade or so but mine is going to be long gone by then. Maybe I'll just use this as a gift wine for folks that don't know better.
  • wnance commented:

8/20/20, 6:35 PM - Sounds corked or cooked. Mine have not been like that in the least.

Yuck. Smells and tastes like stewed fruit mixed with soy sauce. Really cloudy, turning brown, definitely way past drinkable. Disappointed this was included in my Wellington "surprise pack" from Woot.com. Should have been drank about 10 years ago. Down the drain...
  • wnance commented:

4/28/17, 7:17 AM - We had one and really enjoyed it. Not oxidized much at all. Unfortunately sounds like you got a bad bottle.

  • wnance commented:

4/28/17, 2:40 PM - I received a couple of these same bottles, so I have one left. I will be curious to see if it's ok. I did see a couple people comment on this being a very cloudy wine. It's possible that some bottles were flawed, and the wine is super oxidized and cloudy, but mine had a ton of very fine sediment, that will go right through a regular wine funnel screen. I hadn't prepared for that, and ended up pouring my first couple glasses through a washed paper Hario coffee filter. Not the quickest, but the filtered wine was crystal clear. I let the rest of it sit in a decanter for several hours, and that allowed the sediment to mostly settle. Don't know if that was an issue in your bottle.

Better on day 2. Similar impressions, but better integration.

4/14/17, 3:06 PM - I'm also really liking this wine! I'm pleasantly surprised how well this 7 year old zin is drinking, considering how much fruit these Meeks zins have in their youth. I'm going to miss these when they're gone.

2013 Pedroncelli Zinfandel Mother Clone Dry Creek Valley
I found it to be relatively flat with very little on the nose and no discernable notes. It's possible I may have just had a bad bottle, so I might try it again.
  • wnance commented:

4/8/16, 11:59 PM - How much air did you give it? These young Pedroncelli wines can take a while to come around, and I believe that this was described as more old world than the previous vintages, which I tended to decant for a bit before tasting. Or it could have been a bad bottle.

  • wnance commented:

4/16/16, 6:58 PM - Drank one tonight. It was good on pnp, and only got better with air. Nice nose of cherries, palate has cherries, some strawberry, bramble, candied red fruit, etc. I'm crappy at describing wine, but it had a lot of great stuff going on. I think you got a bad bottle. If you got it from Woot, or Pedroncelli, they will definitely replace it.

2007 Buena Vista Syrah Carneros
Outstanding QPR. I only wonder how this may have aged under a cork rather than a screw.
  • wnance commented:

10/20/15, 7:28 PM - I like this a lot as well. I still have a few Ramal Vineyard Pinots in the cellar, and for $12.99 I get a lot of really nice Buena Vista elements to this wine, most noteably the texture, mouthfeel, and dark brooding palate. Have you had other Buena Vista Syrah's? I'm thinking of ordering a few more from Invino, as it still shows up as available in the "Instock" section.

A perfect wine from Reynvaan, from only their second vintage! Dark garnet and completely opaque. Aromas immediately fill the glass, sweet-smoky dark fruits, toasted oak, quite complex. Viscous on the sides of the glass. Sweet, rich, concentrated flavors of dark cherries, anise, toasty oak keep building for at least 30 seconds, then remain in a very long aftertaste. Parker's (deservedly) former reviewer, in his usual pompous, overly flowery, self-impressed style, was also wrong (typically) about giving this just 92 points. It is far better than that, and will easily last another five years. This is an American version of Guigal's single vineyard Cote-Roties at a fraction of the price.

Best darn $20 Zinfandel ever. Medium to full bodied, dense, aroma of dark fruit jumping from the glass. A little hot but not overbearingly so. A GREAT QPR wine for early drinking.
  • wnance commented:

4/13/15, 6:45 PM - Thanks for the review. One comment- there is no way the Turley is a $20 wine. Release price is $23.99, and most stores mark it up. I bought it here in Rochester, NY for $26.99, which is cheaper than I could have purchased it off of the mailing list after shipping. I'm not drinking my 2013 Juvenile's yet, but just had the 2012 yesterday and it was really great!! This or the Old Vine released in the fall are the two best ways (and most affordable) to try Turley.

  • wnance commented:

4/14/15, 4:40 AM - My point is simply that anyone reading your tasting note who gets excited about drinking a 2013 Turley for $20 will be disappointed. The reality is that it's closer to a $30 wine, unless you can walk into a store and find it on the shelf for it's release price, which is near impossible.

  • wnance commented:

4/14/15, 12:55 PM - Fair enough, point taken. Question- I see you drink a lot of Ridge Zinfandel as well. I don't have a lot of experience there- I had an 2011 Geyersville and a Three Valleys at some point. What do you think of Ridge vs Turley for QPR, etc? Both very good but very different styles?

Bought this at local shop to try. Brought to Good Luck for dinner, popped and decanted. This got better with about an hour of air. Really nice rich dark fruit profile, typical herbaceous character of Bordeaux, good acidity and some tannic structure but well mannered. Overall, this was really nice wine and I will try to see if I can get more. The CT drinking window is over, but I think this easily can have a few good years left. So no big hurry.

Just received this order today so popped a bottle with dinner (porcini mushroom risotto). Lighter in color and more transparent than most other Turley's, but nice red/garnet color. Fragrant when opened with more of a red fruit/plum note than deeper black fruit. both my wife and I agreed there was some note of mint/menthol/eucalyptus on the nose - not strong but there. I got some chocolate. not a jammy wine to drink but pleasantly fruity, dry and though 15.5% alcohol not hot. not one of our favorites in terms of Turley's but definitely a decent wine. Complemented the risotto nicely. Clearly less 'big' than the 2011 Juvenile we had last night.
  • wnance commented:

11/13/13, 5:16 PM - I'd be curious if you wait a couple weeks and pop another bottle of the same wine if your tasting notes would change. My Turleys are shook up pretty good after shipping, and I need to let them sit for a couple weeks. That said, I also ordered the Old Vine, and am looking forward to trying it.

I have experienced some bottle variation with the 06, and it's interesting to note that they changed to stelvin closure half way through the 06 bottling and now from 07 no corks anymore....

  • wnance commented:

8/23/13, 9:25 PM - Please report on day 2. My experience is that this wine needs a ton of air. I liked it, so it is possible also that you got a bad bottle, or it isn't your style of wine. But give a report on day 2 and see if it improves.
