Community Tasting Notes 5

March 21, 2022 - comically too young to open, but by happy accident decided to open this for a Mugnier dinner. double-decanted 6 hours before service, and on the open it was aggressively primary and tannins were harsh. after six hours, you get a sense of where this is going: still primary but the tannins mellowed out and you get the silky mouthfeel and good length. do not open anytime soon.

July 25, 2021 - Translucent dark ruby. Nose of ripe cranberries, cherries, and some fresh vegetal/celery notes, I presume from stems (though I don’t know what Mugnier’s whole-cluster policy actually is). Bright acid provides for nice sweet-and-sour contrast. Good length on the palate. Masculine, quite primary and maybe a bit reticent. There was a touch of some volatile/varnish/shoe-polishy note, but I found it actually added pleasant complexity to what otherwise seemed like a wine with only a few facets. Not shut down, but maybe moving in that direction. With enough structure (both tannin and acid) for the long haul, and probably enough concentration of fruit as well, it’s probably best to leave this for at least a decade. Score reflects current enjoyment rather than future potential—this wasn’t quite the showstopper I was hoping for when I spotted it on a wine list at a Provençal restaurant for €550, which is a bargain only in relative terms.

February 11, 2020 - Bottles drunk with lunch or dinner while in Burgundy; 2/10/2020-2/14/2020 (Burgundy): Wow, so much density and concentration. This had a primary aromas of youthful rich black cherry and lots of non-distinct spices. Stuffed for sure, but I found lots of layering and hints of nuance with air and swirling -- fruit with earth, mineral and spice notions. Texturally complex with all that stuffing yet refinement on the finish. Cellar for 10-15+ years. 93-95+

February 11, 2020 - Burgundy, Day 1 (Beaune, France): At the Rôtisserie du Chambertin. The nose on this was classic 2016 with the bright red fruit and cherries and crunchy acids and all that. The palate was where this got a little trickier to judge, as it just did not seem to want to come out in an expressive way. On the back end, there are lots and lots of tannins that give this wine tons of grip. One for the long haul rather than being picked off a list as a cherry, but hey, if I don't do it, who is?

June 27, 2017 - Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Big scale decadent red fruit driven nose, red cherry, strawberry, a hint of crushed blackberry, licorice, mushroom, dark spices and earth. Excellent concentration, good acidity, noticeable tannins and a long sweet red fruit driven finish. It is a big scale, slightly masculine style of wine. Will need a couple decades to reach peak.
