Bottles drunk with lunch or dinner while in Burgundy

Burgundy

Tasted February 10, 2020 - February 14, 2020 by Nanda with 269 views

Flight 1 - Monday (2 notes)

White
2014 Caroline Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
This is pretty reduced so it needed to be decanted. Last glass was definitely the most pure. Terrific richness and minerality throughout with zippy acidity. 2014s are made for the long haul, and this is no exception. Better in 5+ years.
Red
2012 Sylvain Cathiard Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Primary now but so forward and enthralling. Suave, concentrated black cherry fruit with plenty of Vosne spice and a touch of NSG rusticity. The fruit here is so pure and rich with refined, silky tannin. Drinking great though it should hold for a decade+.

Flight 2 - Tuesday (5 notes)

Red
2016 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Wow, so much density and concentration. This had a primary aromas of youthful rich black cherry and lots of non-distinct spices. Stuffed for sure, but I found lots of layering and hints of nuance with air and swirling -- fruit with earth, mineral and spice notions. Texturally complex with all that stuffing yet refinement on the finish. Cellar for 10-15+ years. 93-95+
Red
2015 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée La Colombiere France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
For the money, this is a pretty disappointing wine. Expressive with plenty of sexy black cherry, tea and spice. Comes across a bit heavy handed with little subtlety. I wonder if this has the structure and freshness to support the fruit. High 80s now.
White - Sparkling
2011 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Millésimé Blanc de Noirs Les Ursules France, Champagne
A rare grower who's wines are consistently on point for my palate. Lovely combination or richness and precision (without being overly taut and fruit-stripped, my complaint with most grower-esque bubbles). Terrific density and palate energy throughout. 90-91
White
2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
A dud bottle off the list at Maison du Colombier. Nothing wrong with it - just more advanced, flat and lacking that extra gear of complexity and precision you'd expect from a Lafon Perrieres. 87-88 point showing.
Red
2016 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
A thrilling and of course too young bottle of CSJ. Towering and layered aromas that are classic and rich Gevrey. So much meat spice. Palate has grand cru levels of concentration and layering. Cellar for 10+ years, but feel free to splurge if you see it on the list for a bargain :-)

Flight 3 - Wednesday (7 notes)

White
2015 Coche-Dury Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Third visit to Castel Tre Girard since Nov 17, and this is still on the list :-) ... Perhaps it's now shutting down just a touch as the aromas have lost that 5th and 6th gear of intensity but its still remarkably full on the nose and layered on the palate. Stuffed with chalky, chunky orchard fruit that is offset with balancing acidity. 92-93 points today with upside as this settles in and opens back up.
White
2015 Jean-François Ganevat Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Not a big Jura fan though this had some appeal. Spritzy on opening so it went into the decanter to clean up. Maintained a light level of spritz and cloudiness, and not so light level of animale throughout. It showed Chardonnay with orchard fruit and some mineral but the light horsey/animale notes were too much for my taste.
White - Sparkling
2008 Marie-Noëlle Ledru Champagne Grand Cru Brut Nature France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
This is well done in the leaner and now trendy grower style. I want to like it more but just feel it's too lean and emaciated. Fresh and sufficient as an aperitif. 88-89
White
2015 Henri Germain et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Damn good and benchmark Meursault that belongs up there with other more famous names. Huge, expressive nose of ripe orchard fruit, chalk and some nuttiness. The palate is layered and rich, while maintaining good linearity and freshness. Love the layering of flavor in the finish. 93+

White
2010 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Happy to encounter a well-aged and ready wine on a wine list in Beaune. This punches nicely above its weight class with good concentration and depth of flavor. Classically Puligny with floral and mineral laced orchard fruit. No rush to drink. 90-91
Red
2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée Les Bossières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
A very good vlliage Vosne that shows all I want from Vosne with silky black cherry that has plenty of spice. Mid weight and in line with Village concentration and complexity. This will likely benefit from 3-5 more years of cellar time.
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Late night order at Bout du Monde and good check in on this bottle. This showed more approachable than I would have guessed but its still just an infant with tons of dense red cherry. All the floral and spice is there lurking beneath. Plenty of structure, that is not unruly but not fully in harmony either. Hold for another 10+ years. Should be exceptional with time. 93-95+

Flight 4 - Thursday (6 notes)

White
2017 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
A wow wine on pop n' pour and even better when the last 1/3 of a bottle was tasted ~6 hours later. A nose that just beams with electric orchard fruit with intense mineral, chalk and citrus peel. The palate has grand cru concentration with not an ounce of heaviness as it glides across the palate. Long, ethereal finish. Flirting with perfection as it ages. 95-98+
White - Sparkling
N.V. Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Cuvée de Réserve France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Amusingly noted as Paul Peters on the Caves Madeline wine list. This wine is consistently solid and satisfying in the aperitif category of bubbles. Good clean orchard fruit with lots of minerality and plenty of energetic bubbles. 90 points today, as it almost always shows.
White
2016 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
A very good vintage of this wine that should drink close to peak form early on. Great round, rich and concentrated white fruit with good depth and mineral complexity. Perhaps a touch clipped now and it should elongate with 3-5 years in the cellar. 93+
Red
2014 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Fairly classic Chambolle with lots of strawberry and clay in a bright package. Better than average 1er cru concentration with a lingering spice and clay finish. Drinking well know but should have some upside as this gains nuance. 91-92+
Red
2016 Domaine de Saint Pierre Arbois Saint-Pierre France, Jura, Arbois
Served blind. The nose here was so off putting it can only be described as "dirty ass" (as it was by two Burgundy winemaker friends at the dinner table). Palate has plenty of youthful cherry but it is laced with gross, animale and merde funk. Undrinkable.

Red
2016 Comando G Tumba del Rey Moro Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid
Served blind. A wow wine in how much red fruit concentration it achieves without showing any richness or heaviness. This had a distinct mineral and clay-like undercurrent so I was guessing Chambolle 1er from a good producer/vintage. Never heard of the producer before. Way, way better than an 06 Rayas tasted the next night. 92-94+

Flight 5 - Friday (8 notes)

White
2017 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
This really started to gain it's steam an hour after PnP. Gorgeous, full nose with layers of fruit, mineral and attractive green notes. Palate is lush and concentrated with bright acidity. Fun now, but should improve with time in the cellar.
White
2017 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Simple flavors in a light weight package that comes across as flat. Just okay for a Bourgogne Blanc ... so many better examples out there.
White
2015 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
This is firing on all cylinders already. Rich fruit but plenty of freshness and lift, with classic Chassagne mineral flavors that add to the overall impression of balance despite the warmer vintage.
Red
2014 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
I liked this quite a bit more than others at the table. It has forward, rich and polished black cherry fruit that is the house style and works so well in Vosne. The fruit provides the right frame for the spice-filled depth to linger and shine. A joyous and unforgiving expression of Vosne. Fun now and should improve as it gains nuance. 93+

White
2017 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
A delicious, expressive and true-to-terroir young MdT. So much decadent white orchard fruit with a pronounced core of minerality and zest. Nervous spine of acidity throughout. Delicious now and should age for two decades. 93-95+
White
2015 Hubert Lamy Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots Cuvée Haute Densité France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
A wow wine that has Grand Cru levels of concentration. Love the powerful mineral-laden white fruit matched against beaming acidity. Really exciting interplay. Very impressive for its level.
Red
2006 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A wine that was so off putting it was hard to enjoy. Over-ripe fruit with roasted notes that were stewy and sickly across the palate. Lacking any acidity or structure. Adrian really liked this, so I can't explain how our palates complete diverged on the bottle.
Red
2014 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos de La Bussière France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Late night PnP. A wine with the bones to age for a decade or two. Yet it showed approachable with smoky and mineral-filled red cherry fruit. Chambolle like with the mineral and clay accents. 92-93+
