April 6, 2024 - Charity Wine Pairings for Hospice House Auction winners; 4/6/2024-4/7/2024 (Bellingham): This was the birth year of one our guests who had generously donated at the Hospice House Auction to win this charity wine dinner.
I carefully double decanted this about four or five hours before serving. The color and nose were astounding considering the age. Paired with tagliatelle with fresh perigord truffles. Once served, it continues to freshen as it unfolded. There was far more fruit that one would expect at seventy-plus years. Dried and fresh cherries, balsamic, pipe tobacco, roses. Beautifully textured and clean. Had this be served to me blind, I'd have subtracted at least forty years off my guess. I'm lucky to open a lot of old Piedmont wines, many from the '50s. This bottle, from the unheralded '53 vintage, may have been the finest I've encountered. The last glass was the best; it could have used another several hour decant. No harm, as it was transcendent.

December 15, 2023 - Robert's Holiday Dinner at Margaux's Table (Margaux's Table, White Bear Lake, MN): Medium brick red color. Uncorked and tasted about an hour before leaving, and it was singing, so I just put the cork back in and we drank it about 4 hours later. Flat out amazing....and at 70 years, wow. The nose is very complex, offering a melange of black cherry, dried strawberry, mulled spices, anise, red currants and blood orange notes. The palate is medium plus bodied, dark cherry, dried strawberries, crushed rock, blood orange and citrus peel, soft fine grained tannins, and very long and silky finish. Simply beautiful. This was a sheer delight to drink and just ponder. Pristine bottles like this can hang on for another decade at least. Guess we found that Barolo sweet spot afterall :).

December 15, 2023 - Robert's Holiday Party (Margaux's): My WOTN...and I am not a Nebbiolo fan! This bottle opened my eyes to why some people collect Barolo wines. This was reminiscent of a nicely aged Bordeaux. Shockingly good, especially for a 70 year old wine! This had the "WOW' factor in spades! Everything you could expect from an older wine and more! The fruit was still present (tart and sweet cherry) with plenty of mushroom, Unami, forest floor, earth, leather and some herbal notes. Utterly delicious and would never have guessed a Barolo nor anywhere near 70 years old! Truly a treat....Thanks Kevin! 96-96+ for my palate, and that is likely conservative!

December 15, 2023 - Robert's holiday get-together: See ROCKNROLLERs note on wine treatment, it was his bottle. Drank a small pour over about an hour. This wine floored me. It has all the hallmarks of an aged Bordeaux with a slightly bolder frame. Aromatic with tar, red flowers, black fruit, cherries and herbs. While being bold, it is not aggressive, excessively dry or tannic. I honestly did not think barolo could taste like this, and the way it drinks at 70 years of age is mind-boggling.

July 21, 2023 - Remove capsule to a perfect cork wet have way through. Look like it had be re corked being that clean. Opened to a aroma of smoke and cherries and let it micro oxygenate for hour or so. Pouring this was spectacular as wine came out of bottle like freshly squeeze strawberry juice and did not disappoint. It had a sweet cherry and sour aroma like a fortified wine, more like dried fruit. Elegant with sent of chocolate and tanned leather. Carrying good acid and medium finish.
