Introduction

Robert put together a really fun dinner at Margaux's Table for the hodliday. We had a group of 9 to enjoy Peggy's return to Margaux's Table after an unfortunate accident sidelined her for months (RF/CF, GA, JS, JG/KG, KB/VB, JP). The food was splendid as was the atmosphere for the season, and the wines most definitely did not suck. Geat night everyone! Cheers!

Flight 1 (12 notes)

This was showing very nicely as our reception wine tonight. It was bursting with fresh green apple and had nice chalk notes, less oxidative and more fresh. Very good.

2011 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. This has a beautiful toast, roasted hazelnuts, fresh air, freshly cut pear, crisp with vibarnt acidity, and that classic CdC elegance and crystalline minerality. Excellent, 94+(+)pts.

Very pale green color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. The nose has stone fruit, pear, tons of stony minerality. The palate also shows the stone mineral notes, stone fruits, lemon-lime, vanilla, creamy, oak witha long citrus-lime finish. This showed more than a bottle a year ago and it was more prominent over the hour.

White
2018 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. I like the profile here, showing tangerine and Meyer lemon across the nose and palate, vibrant, tangy, salte and citrus peel, actually a bit more trim than the '15 Leeuwin, though the oak seem similar to me but buoyed better by the youthful, more vivid fruit.

2015 Staglin Family Chardonnay Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Light gold plus color. Followed a glass over 45 minutes plus. I think we saw a wine that just feels like it has seen it's best days; not bad at all, just a bit tired. It feels lean, lacking some in fruit, mostly pear, with the oak still apparent.

2020 Keplinger Eldorado USA, California, Sierra Foothills

Light gold color. Small glass. Viognier 57%/Roussanne 26%/Grenach Blanc 17%. Tropical, bright, peach, star fruit, lemon, pear, smoky slate.

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Lots of bottle stank to start, then it seems to work itself out; dark and deep, dark cherry, iron, funky earth and dried herbs, almost oily in texture and viscous, good, but not as good as a recent bottle that had more nuance.
Red
2011 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Light red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. I love the gorgeous red fruits here; more strawberry on the nose and raspberry on the palate, classic earth and dusty minerality, with amazing intensity from this pale charmer with exquisite purity on a light-medium frame. love it. 92+ to 93pts.
Red
1953 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Medium brick red color. Uncorked and tasted about an hour before leaving, and it was singing, so I just put the cork back in and we drank it about 4 hours later. Flat out amazing....and at 70 years, wow. The nose is very complex, offering a melange of black cherry, dried strawberry, mulled spices, anise, red currants and blood orange notes. The palate is medium plus bodied, dark cherry, dried strawberries, crushed rock, blood orange and citrus peel, soft fine grained tannins, and very long and silky finish. Simply beautiful. This was a sheer delight to drink and just ponder. Pristine bottles like this can hang on for another decade at least. Guess we found that Barolo sweet spot afterall :).

Very dark red/purple color. Splash decanted. Drank a glass over about an hour. Well spiced, blackberry, cassis, slightly herbal, more wood and more structure and firmer tannins. Very good, but I think will be better in a couple of years.

Deep golden color. Small glass. Love this vintage of Rieussec, beautiful fruit, perfect balance, orange, orange cream, very creamy, great acid, pineapple, floral, apricot, spice. Lovely.
