August 29, 2014 - Open now for 9 months and it just keeps getting better. Medium brown with green highlights. Figs, gingerbread, coffee, coconut, caramel and smoke. Unctuous, smooth and not overly sweet for a Malmsey. Off the charts. Outstanding.

October 26, 2013 - medium brown with gold highlights. On opening: smooth, balanced, light weight. Cocoa and caramel. Nice acid, no burn. Very good.

January 22, 2013 - Madeira @ Bistro Cacao (A Malvasia Affair) (Washington D.C.): I always wanted to try this wine side by side with its 1886 counterpart for educational reasons. Both were procured from the Afonso family and comes from Camo dos Lobos vineyards. The main difference is that the 1885 spent most of its time in wood and the 1886 spent most of its time in glass. This 1885 proudly flaunts it unctuous richness from its lengthy cask life. Rich, fudgey, chocolatey and honeied, with notes of fruitcake. Dense and concentrated, but oh so precise with powerful and precise acidity. Outrageous length. I had to rest and contemplate what I was drinking before I could take another sip. Fabulous showing.

July 5, 2008 - Studio Restaurant (@ The Montage Resort In Laguna Beach): Can't say that I have ever tried something like this before. Totally amber in color, a nose that would cut through a dense cool winter fog with a big whip of an alcohol sword with caramel dripping from it. 19th century. Really appreciate Frank sharing this with us.

March 10, 2007 - Madeira @ The Caucus Room (Washington DC): This wine was purchased by Barbeito from the Alfonso family and comes from the Cama dos Lobos vineyards. Butterscotch, molasses and honey. Hints of vanilla. Higher in acids than the 1895 D'Oliveira Malvazia (which makes it better, in my opinion). This wine is interestingly both contemplative and hedonistic. I could easily drink this all night without tiring. Lean (for Malvazia) and mean and long in the finish. OUTSTANDING.
