Flight 1 (15 notes)

White
2006 Peter Michael Sauvignon Blanc L'Apres-Midi USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
Seemed fine. Oak seemed a bit higher than I expected and as the wine warmed, a bit of alcohol seemed to pop up.
White
2005 Kongsgaard Chardonnay The Judge USA, California, Napa Valley
I expected a bigger wine but I was msitaken. In fact, this is a wine of precision and structure, a great chardonnay. Baked apple, flint, lemon brulee. Some minerality and a pure elegant finish. Lovely and a memorable wine.
White
2003 Marcassin Chardonnay Zio Tony Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Packed, which was a real contrast, as this win followed the 2005 Kongagaard Judge. Pineapple, mineral, with some oak on the nose and a very nice lemon/lime finish.
White
2004 Sine Qua Non The Rejuvenators USA, California
This wine disappointed me a little bit. Waxy and full bodied with a flowery nose, some anise/spice but the finish seemed to fall off and the wine lacked some precision.
Red
1996 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Stinky nose with a bit of smoke and some tart fruit.
Red
1996 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Nose starts off a bit stalky (stems?) with earthy cherry, mineral and still seems wound up. Ryan indicated this wine was young for our consumption, which seemed to be accurate. I liked it.
Red
2006 Benovia Pinot Noir Bella Una USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
My second time with this wine. I actually think the showing was better this time. FWIW, the wine will be released later this year and we drank this one from a shiner. The nose shows brown spice, highly fragrant and signed with what I sometimes perceive as 'cologne'. Just big and fragrant. Stony fruit, a mix of red and black this time and the difference in this bottle is the justaposition of the red vs. the black, with the emergence of the high toned red side. Pretty much speaks CA pinot and a sharp contrast to the two burgs that preceded it, of course.
Red
1995 Sine Qua Non The Other Hand USA, California, Central Coast
With the first glass, lots of secondary notes--cigar box, tobacco leaf, even a little fumey. The palate shows dried cherry and I would not have guessed syrah based on these notes. As the wine sat through dinner, it picked up more barnyard accents and those aromas really emerged. One comment was "Beaucastel". Not my style.
Red
2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah Atlantis Fe2O3~1a, b & c USA, California, Central Coast
The nose on this wine reminded me a lot of what I sometimes pick up with someof the Garys' fruit--bbq meat, saddle, tar, with a sweet edge. As the wine sits, the blueberry notes emerged, along with tar/creosote. Given the pace of the wine that kept coming, I enjoyed this wine and just kept walking my Reidel path. I just wish I could have camped out with this wine for another day to get a real sense of what it was about, given all the attention being paid to it.
Red
2003 Araujo Estate Syrah Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Well, I will differ from the high praise that other in CT showed this wine. This wine didn't want to loosen up. Tight with toasted red fruit and some alcohol, too.
Red
2003 Saxum Cuvée Rocket Block James Berry Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Willow Creek District
My last RB. Given the TNs on this wine in CT, I elected to really cool it down before I took it to dinner. Indeed, some raisins and heat show on the nose. An inky blue and black fruit mix with a plush long finish. The nose was the only downside here but the finish is memorable.
Red
2005 Saxum Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Man, this wine IMO needs a lot more time or a big decant. I didn't bring the bottle so I am unsure if it saw any air but it was wrapped up pretty good. One thing I remember from last night was my remark about "2-3 more years". A big wine full of boysenberry, blackberry. The nose is really intriguing but the finish was closed down. Hang on and let it sleep or decant well.
White - Sparkling
1989 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
I drink so little of champagne, most especially, fine champagne. A mag of this shows up towards the latter half of the meal as a palate cleanser. Just one of those rare nights. My sensory perception on things like this--particularly after I have had 10 wines (and spitting was nowhere to be found last night)--was a bit dulled. I remember bread dough and green apple and like the SQN Atlantis, only wish I could try this again today. To whoever ordered this (Trevor?), thank you.
Red
2001 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon MX Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Drank from a magnum. This was the second last wine, after all of the syrahs and pinots had preceded it so my notes are tailing off at this point. Big nose and really not showing any age, reminding me of a young wine, say a 2003 or 2004 so it seems to be holding up quite well. The finish also seemed tight and I am certain this wine was decanted by the sommelier so my opinion here is let this wine go a lot longer.
White - Fortified
1885 Barbeito Madeira Malvasia Reserva Velha Portugal, Madeira
Can't say that I have ever tried something like this before. Totally amber in color, a nose that would cut through a dense cool winter fog with a big whip of an alcohol sword with caramel dripping from it. 19th century. Really appreciate Frank sharing this with us.
