2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien)

Saturday, December 2, 2017 - Had this side by side a 1996 Lagrange. The 1996 was great and clearly better then the 2000. I thought I did notice the slightest TCA notes in this 2000 and given all the other comments on CT on this wine and this being a chateau I really love I am reserving my judgment here. Although I do note that I had a 2000 a few months back which did not show great and did definitely not show TCA notes - that bottle was rather a bit tired. I have a case of this stashed away from perfect provenance and am keeping my fingers crossed that I just got unlucky here twice.

12/7/2017 6:29:00 AM - BB, you notes say that you are a gentleman and a scholar! I hope and think that your next bottle will be good. I don't do tasting stories on CT, but in this case, I wish I would have. I drank the 2000 next to some really good wines about 3 months or so ago, and it clearly BLEW them out of the water. Even people who were not Bordeaux geeks recognized the height of the Lagrange. To give you a bit of encouragement for your hidden case, and allowance of rest for my sleeping dozens, I will end my comment by saying that the 1990 that you and I both truly love was not nearly as good 10 years ago. I believe that the 2000 will need lots of time, and while I don't think that it will be as great as the 1990 Bordeaux that you and I both know and love, it will be a great 2000 that can lean on wines 3X its price. I believe that the 2000's are just lean, and lack fruit. They remind me allot of 1996 with more hype. And as we both know, 1996 was a great, great year. Cheers matie, always love reading your notes here.

Oh, and lets don't forget, there is no such thing as good old wine! There are just good bottles...

12/7/2017 6:33:00 AM - All very wisely spoken my friend. Many thanks for your warm words! I will indeed be patient on the 2000 - after all I have still over 2 cases of 1990 to go through. I'll probably check in again on it in ~5 years time. Cheers and all the very best, Ben.

3/13/2018 9:42:00 AM - Well said Purple Tooth. Have gone through a number of 96 Lagrange over the years, clearly an excellent Bdx, and had some 90 as well, but the 2000 is clearly better than either in my eyes. Would do well in a Latour vertical
