2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien)

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (381) Avg Score: 92.0 points

  • A lot of youthful intensity and nubile fruit, nevertheless very accessible. Harmonious and seamless, in the beginning of its drinking curve, only upside from here. Cassis, smoke, green elements and hints of oak spice gradually melting into the mix. Nicely fresh profile, good lengthy finish. Lagrange is never the most complex wine but pushes clearly above its price point and excels in its class. This is even better than 1990 and 1996. Generally speaking (and here too) the 2000 left bank Bdx vintage has always been acclaimed but could it be even better than anticipated? If 2010 was a great but a solar year, could the 2000 be the last truly great vintage?

  • Disappointing performance considering previous bottles tasted of this vintage. Nice bouquet though, but disjointed on the palate with dried and slightly greenish fruit, light body, and a surprisingly short finish. An odd bottle?

  • Wow. Wow wow.

What a fabulous bottle of wine. I've enjoyed every bottle of this I have had, but it's so awesome now. I wish I had a lot more, but it sadly was the last one. Smooth, rich, lots of beautiful mature Bordeaux flavors, mellow, smells good, tastes incredible.

  • Disappointing. The fill and cork were perfect, but not the wine: the attack is still fresh and perky, but the middle section and finish are fading fast. Instead of the midpalate surge I was expecting, it just dropped away and the longer it was open, the worse it got. Of course I could have had a bad bottle, but I would at least try one.

  • Ripe classic Bordeaux. After 23 years is this Grand Cru ripe. Much better now than my last bottle in 2021. Intense colour. Needs 2h to open in the carave. Cassis & ceder nose, komplex, ripe and fine cool Cabernet style. Taste fantastic. After 23y beginning to open, great to drink now. Very intense but also elegant fine wine experience. Dry and perfect matured. Moch better than the bittles bevore. (I tasted this red over the last years. The tasting notes between 2010-2021 were not that great. But now this red St. Julien turn to a great Bordeaux. )

  • Bordeaux 2000 & 2001 Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Blue fruits here with cedar and some cool greenness. Later some toast, a little bacon far a touch of cinder. Palate has peppery tannins, some spice and more cigar box. Right up my street. My third favourite wine of the night.

  • Neil's 2000 & 2001 Bordeauxs (Piccolino, London): Powerful wine, very structured, and another classical bordeaux with cassis and old school desks and pencil shavings. Quite dense, unfussy, a little ponderous maybe, but it rises above it all to be become a quite lovely glass that I reckon punches well above its weight. It made me think about whether I had enough Lagrange in my cellar, which is a positive endorsement!

  • Neil’s 2000/01 Bordeaux @ Piccolino: Classic blackcurrant and cedar nose. Dense, cool blackcurrant fruit. Nicely dense. Quite a lot here. Relatively monolithic without the negative connotations. ****

  • Left bank bordeaux 2008 and older (BLVD): It was neat to try the 1995, 2000 and 2005 all in one flight. The 1995 was at peak and fully mature, with a complex and tertiary frame. The 2000 was not quite ready yet, still tannic and slightly primary. The 2005 was nowhere near ready, with primary fruit and un-integrated oak.

  • Monthly Tasting Group: Bordeaux 2008 and Older (BLVD Kitchen & Bar, Wayzata, MN): Small taste. Only had a splash and some slow-O time. The least ready of the 95, 00, 05 for me. See galeskj's note.

  • Same bottle and flight as galweskj, and I concur with his comments. I've had the 2000 a couple times now and the first of those bottles was a "wow" wine. This one showed more structure and less perfume and seemed to be a good 5 years off from reaching peak drinking. Chalk it up to cork variation, I guess. The '95 we had alongside was gorgeous, while the '05 seemed nowhere close to ready.

  • We love this wine across vintages and especially on top vintages this performs like nothing else. We recently had the excellent 1996 ( Papies 93) and what a beautiful performance that was. Here in the 2000 one post some decanting the wine showed its beauty , classic, good solid fruit, elegant and ever so not trying to prove anything. Just ever so beautiful classic claret. Luckily we have more as this will easily deliver for another decade. 93

  • Allowed to breathe in glass 1 hour. Clear deep dark inky garnet color. Lovely bouquet of black cherries, black currants, blackberries and their liqueurs; forest floor, tobacco, roasted nuts, cardamom, bay leaf, nutmeg, crushed gravel and oyster shell, hints of meat and soy sauce. Similar on the palate, full body, balanced, seamless, generous. Improved with air, enjoyed over 4 evenings, best on day #1.

  • Last tasted two years ago, this is now firmly in its early drinking window with a long life ahead of it. The nose is still a little youthful and tight, but opens up with time in the glass. Red berry fruits are prominent, and now with prominent currant tones which weren't discernible previously. The tannin is resolving nicely on the palate, with good balance and depth. The finish is still the weaker link, and it will be interesting to see if tme will address the sharpness. 93+

  • 2/12, vg cork. Decanted 1/2 hr.
Deep ruby/garnet core, pale ruby rim. nose is quite youthful with attractive ripe fruit, becoming more minerally and smoky as it warms. Medium bodied, dark fruited on the palate, tocuh of smoke and mienral, soft tannins, some cedary notes, fresh acidity, very good length minerally finish. This is very nice and is drinking quite well, thouigh still relatively early days I would say.

  • Branaire Ducru Vertical (The Market Brasserie at the Intercontinental at the O2, London): Profound dark fruited and green pepper nose with some cigar box and a little faint star anise. Palate has more of the same and whilst early in its window this gives huge pleasure tonight and wine I'd love to have in the cellar. My second WOTN.

  • Youthful dark ruby/purple in color. Classic and open knit aromas of black/dark red fruits like cassis/blackberries, violets, graphite, smoky embers and hay. This bottle showed a sweet and savory profile with graphite framing the black fruits, firm tannins, medium acidity and a structured mineral and barnyard tinged finish. Amongst the best Lagrange from this era.

  • gorgeous mature bordeaux nose - sweet tobacco, turned earth, damp leaves. very sniffable wine. in the mouth - smooth red and dark fruits with a coffee finish. very much in its drinking window and while I think its still has some life left in it yet, it already gives much pleasure.

  • Decanted for three hours. Explosive fragrance from the minute the cork was pulled. The wine is ready to drink but could still last longer. Very well integrated with classic characteristics of aged claret. Most of the recent notes capture what I detected in this wine.

  • One of a dozen bought on release. Decanted for about three hours to replace corked bottle.

Well, we finally got there after 22 years. Now at last mature. The colour remains remarkably deep, with just a tiny bit of browning on the edges. On the nose it's very attractive and warm, though not as fragrant as the best. Harmonious soft fruit on the palate, with the tannins now tamed at last. Decent long, slightly hot and peppery, aftertaste.

The overall effect is very harmonious and attractive, with good substance and concentration, but (as in my previous notes of Nov 2019 and Oct 2020), I'm still finding this wine a little lacking in complexity.

Drink now and probably for some years to come, I don't think it's going to fade anytime soon.

  • With these 20 year plus wines- "there are no great wines , only great bottles"-and this as a great bottle!

Very impressive deep ruby color - still opaque at age 21 or so!

On the nose this is classic St Julien that instantly transports you to the Medoc- Black fruits, creme de cassis, lead pencil , tobacco and vanilla. Just gorgeous and no hint of fatigue.

Medium bodied with fully resolved tannins and off the charts flavor concentration for a wine this age. The finish is long and savory.

Drink now, but this type of stuff will keep "indefinitely" in a cold cellar.

  • Deep garnet.

Medium plus intensity on the nose with blackcurrant, black cherry, black plum, mint, graphite, cedar, coffee, chocolate, caramel, leather, dried blackberry / black cherry, earth, savoury notes, tobacco, meat and wet leaves. Fully developed.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. Medium plus acidity, high fine grained tannins, medium plus body, medium alcohol, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for aging or further aging.

  • From the coravin. Classic St. Julien. Dark fruit, earth and leather. A great bottle! I've had some bottle variation with these, but when they are good, they are great. Only complaint is that the fruit is a bit short. The wine is still fresh, medium bodied, has resolved but firm tanins. Outstanding QPR as usual from Lagrange. Nose was spectacular

  • Gorgeous color, nice nose but a bit tannic, light with a reasonable finish, definitely needs the two hour decant. Needed a two hour decant and then another hour in the glass before it really started to improve. In the end, a long wait and significant cost for only a moderate wine.

  • I’ve got a lot of 2000s, nice wines that often don’t show much terroir. This has plenty of St Julien tobacco and dirt. Some tannic structure, good acids, no hurry, but drinking well. Cassis, black plum, tobacco, soil, hint of mushroom. B+/A-

  • First tasting of this case. Cork broke upon opening. Could not rescue, had to push through. The nose was bold and energetic, a bit of cedar, solid fruit, hardwood desk. Taste had level soft tannins, some blackberry and raspberry albeit a bit tart. Got better in the glass over time. Will plan ahead of time next time to decant for a couple of hours.
Overall a welcome surprise and can't wait to try the next bottle.

  • Decanted briefly. Nice aged Medoc not giving up much in the way of nuance tonight but delicious. Not sure if this is past peak, in an intermediate stage, or an off bottle compared to the last one.

  • Break out the trumpets and fly the banners high, the 2000 Lagrange has finally arrived at the peak of the mountain. This is what Bordeaux is all about. More Pauillacish at this stage, full of pencil shavings, graphite, cedared potpourri, and beautiful funk. This takes me back to some of the first Bordeaux that I fell in love with. Drink in a dark cozy room filled with leather and dim light.

  • This note is consistent with two other tasters tonight from different bottles. Opened quickly, yet did not have much character. Started fading after 1.5 hours. After seeing several 93 scores from other on CT, I wonder if this was an off lot. I was expecting much more from this wine. Paired nicely with Lamb filet and Lamb Osso Bucco Ravioli(my favorite item on the menu tonight). Drink now-2025.

  • Agree wirh StefanAkiko. And CCY wrote recently, "Not a blockbuster, but rather an outstanding, honest wine that speaks of its place." The bottle tonight fits this description perfectly.
Not a blockbuster = not the best Bdx, St.Julien or 2000 Bdx I have had.
BUT it stands out = pure, mature wine that speaks of St. Julien and no other place
honest = 3eme GCC that is not tryigg to be anything different because it is a good thing as what it is.
In its zone at the beginning. Will reside there for a good while.
    No reason to wait.
    No reason to rush.
Perfect with pan-seared venison, sauteed brussels sprouts, Black Japonica rice and wine sauce.

  • Double decanted then drunk over several hours.

Cassis more than stone fruit, bricks, baking chocolate, tobacco, leather and violets on the nose. It's mid plus weighted with excellent balance of fruit, soil and savory notes. More of the same notes on the palate with excellent balancing acidity. It's reasonably structured with excellent palate presence with focus. Not a blockbuster, but rather an outstanding, honest wine that speaks of its place. Quite long on the back end with some leafy notes adding to the whole. Drinking very well right now with time in hand.

  • Easily the best of the more modern Lagrange, counting from 1990 to 2011, albeit I haven’t yet enjoyed neither the 2003 nor the 2006.

    In short:
This is a wine of high precision of the fruit, good tannins in the early stages of maturity. A good range of Bdx earth, brett, beautiful piercing red fruit, perfect acids with enticing length and complexity. Superbly energized and intense in a classic Bdx style. St Julien in a nutshell. Wife enjoyed :-)

    Will last long.

  • Smells like a barnyard. Taste tar, tobacco, bell pepper. Would have been in its prime 4/5 years ago. It’s lost its fruit now. Recommend drinking right away if you own this one. Would go well with smelly cheese, ribs, prime rib.

  • A big disappointment. Not disagreeable, but not at all memorable either. What was it again? Felicity said ‘horses!’ but then she often does. Toby said it was like Harold Pinter, but refused to elucidate. I don’t know if he meant the person (dead) or his plays (inscrutable.)

  • Just lovely. Dense garnet. Matured into earth, saddle leather. Acid is fresh, silky tannin. Holds on through the entire drink without losing power. Long finish. Proves that you don’t need to spend a pretty sum to get a wine that will deliver when it grows up.

  • Decent closure with some seepage. Colour is a very deep garnet - narrow clear rim after 21 years is pretty impressive. Expressive nose with tobacco, pencil shavings and leather. Elegant palate - bramble, menthol and eucalyptus. Soft well integrated fine tannins and a long refreshing finish.

  • Looks like professional reviewers have seen some of the inconsistency that this group has experienced.

Today Neal Martin at Vinous commented on the bottle variation of the '00 Lagrange, saying his most recent was "... maybe less brutish than the previous bottle, displaying more cohesion and less austerity on the finish," calling it "delightful and the best example ... I have encountered."

He's rated bottles of the '00 Lagrange 90 and 93; Tanzer has rated it 89 and 92+. Fwiw.

  • Ive watched this wine go from brawny, to muscular, to now, hard and fit! This is now clearly in drinking window and in the elegant department. Very Pauillac'ish in style this time. This is where Bordeaux appellations collide and dont mean much...Its just a fine glass of definite Bordeaux...Drink and Hold...Is there such a thing? How about Hold and Drink!

  • The ups and downs continue with this wine. Bottle variation means some are just good and some excellent. This one was ... good ... after about 4 hours in the decanter. I'm not too inclined to keep these around forever. -2027.

  • Deceptively youthful in its appearance it has moved forward in the last year, and it is starting to peak earlier than I had anticipated. It is really starting to match its plaudits on release, and is an excellent drink. The nose is ripe with cherry and strawberry with tobacco notes and the cedar becoming less pronounced. It is silky smooth on the palate and complex with a great depth. In spite of its elegance it has a tannic spine to give good balance on the palate and finish. The latter is decent but perhaps is a little light and some of the last rough edges still needing to resolve. A couple of hours in the decanter is perfectly sufficient. 94+

  • Bordeaux 2000 - 20 Years On - 48 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) It´s a good vintage but not on par with more recent great vintages like 09/10/15/16. Why? A smaller group of top wines reaching lower highs and in general a tad less depth, purity and finesse. 2) Right bank is ready, the left bank still needs time to integrate and open up. 3) Not much tertiary aromas yet - peak drinking window at least 10 years away for most wines. 4) 2000 is a bit a cooler vintage which is great for the right bank (not too much ripeness). 5) Winners? Pomerol with the highest ratings. Le Pin (97+ pts) leading the pack for me (narrowly beating the consensus winner Pavie (97 pts).

More information, top and worst 10 lists, appellation rankings, out- and underperformer from five participants in the story link. As always, in such tastings (lots of wines, not a lot of time per wine, not decanted) the ranking of wines/appellations might be more informative than the scores.

TN: Beautifully cool, fresh style with lots of minerality and herbal aromas paired with blue but especially some sweet red berries including strawberry and raspberry candy on the nose. Round and harmonious it lacks a bit of depth on the palate (the nose hinted at a bigger potential) but has a nice structure although some tannins seem a touch green (but to such a low degree, it almost is like a feature). All in all, quite nice to drink today.

Decanting: A short 1h in the decanter should be sufficient.

    Group average: 93.0 pts
Group rank: Shared 20th out of 48

  • Decanted for an hour and enjoyed over another hour. This is in a very nice place right now. Didn't write down formal notes, but this drank as a very traditional bordeaux (not heavy handed) and at futures price back in 2001 enjoyed even more.

  • Decanted for an hour. Paired with 2000 Leoville Poyferre. The Lagrange drank very well considering it was half the price of the Leoville. Still had nice vibrancy of fruit on opening, but couldn't quite match the complexity of the Leoville. Very nice finish. It held up over the two hours we drank, but the luster didn't last past day 1. Day two it had dropped the vibrancy. All in all, excellent QPR at a $100 price point. 93

  • Another stellar showing. Popped and poured. Notes of dried black fruits, black truffle, cigar box, and briar patch. Medium bodied, with excellent depth, velvety texture, good delineation and focus; long and savory finish. Drinking exceptionally well now, but I think it will continue to evolve and improve for at least another decade.

  • This is open for business but by no means fully mature. There’s a whole lot of flavor, from fruit through earth and tobacco. It’s quite even in terms of density from front to back, and not showing much in the way of nuance. What it is showing is a boisterous personality, some sneaky back end tannin, and plenty of stuffing to stand up to a delicious home cooked burger. Glad to have more, and in no rush to drink them.

  • This is officially in the drinking window with 21 turns. Definitely the end of the chalk and brawn, and now in the clear light of elegance with a nice long life ahead that should transition into more masculinity in about 10 year from now, showcasing St. Julien earthiness and then onto beef Juices and dripping...Man, I am starting to make my own mouth water! The acidity that has given this snail aging should allow freshness while all the other goodies develop...Looking forward the unopened OWC's. • The best bottle of this wine yet from what I tasted. Some very distinct savoury bay leaf notes holding a lot of interest on day 2. If this wine continues on this path it might surprise to the upside and another point.

  • Much better than the last one opened two years ago, this bottle was a lot fresher. Quite shy aromas of forest fruits and cigar box, with just a hint of spice. A very appealing attack of dark cherry and wild strawberry, but this time with a much cooler and fresher seam of blackcurrant on top, which keeps the flavours in check. There are hints of syrupiness in the middle section, but these are much less prominent than the last bottle tried. The finish is long, fairly crisp and dominated by dark raspberry flavours.

Overall, this is very good - the fruit is very attractive, but it just lacks a little grip and depth to reach a higher level - no reason to think that it will improve further, but no reason to hurry either.

  • Un vin élégant et fin, doté d'un bel équilibre, savoureux et bien fait. Sans être très profond, il est l'archétype du "claret", élégant, tout en nuances, facile à boire, parfait compagnon de table. Un vin à point, mais rien ne presse. 91 pts

  • The fill was into the neck and the cork was pristine; double decanted an hour before dinner. Healthy purple core, turning towards garnet at the rim. An extroverted and complex bouquet, happily offering up notes of cedary cassis, blackberry, bramble, sun baked stones; hints of earth and black truffle. Medium bodied, with great balance and depth; velvety texture and a long and focused finish. Bags of life...this should continue to evolve and improve for at least another 15 years.

  • 'Double Valentines' Dinner (Stella & Jeremy's House, Hong Kong): Briefly decanted then drank over 2-3 hours....a shame because it needs a 5+hour decant or more at this stage of its evolution. Deep red/black opaque but transparent at the edges. Nose is tight and firm but attractively fruit and smoke/cedar driven... no rough edges. Palate is similar balance of part-evolved tannin/ fruit/ oak evolution. Bit unevolved on the finish. Was overshadowed by the 1996 Ch. Talbot (93 pts) we drank alongside it and which benefited from having been double-decanted 6 hours in advance. Still. two lovely St Juliens and fun to compare their relative development.

  • Doubled decanted about 3 hours before serving. This seemed to be the most red-fruited of the four bottles opened tonight. Came across as having more acidity than the other wines, with a sense of lift on the finish. Long and clean finish. Very, very nice.

  • Opened 3 hours hours ahead. Still pretty back colour. Initial clean nose of cassis. Quite modern and plush. After 3 hours this has settled. Much more classic leafy blackcurrant, some tobacco & leather. Some spice in the finish? It has good fruit density too. Despite the classicism and evident quality, it remains stubbornly obdurate of anything other than the straightest of bats. It's all there but it never really gives itself up. Instead, it remains very correct, moderate and linear. I want to be won over but this ultimately lacks charm.

  • Day 2 Mondavi Bordeaux glass- simply recorked after day one

Definitely mature and integrated. Aromas of plums, boysenberry, and a little smoky tobacco.

This bottle is in a fantastic drinking window. The tannins are integrated, the acid is plentiful, the fruit and the herbal notes are present. Smooth and well rounded.

Just a fantastic gift from a friend for the holidays.

  • A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (76%) and Merlot (24%). Aged for approx. 18 months in oak barriques (approx. 50% new). Annual production 250,000 bottles. 13% alcohol.

Very deep and dark ruby-red color that permits very little light through its core, but noticeably more so through its pale red rim. Quite restrained and somewhat brooding nose of ripe forest fruits, some leather, light savory notes of toasted oak, light brambly notes of black raspberries, a hint of licorice root and a touch of cigar box. No herbaceous notes of any kind here. The wine is ripe, juicy and medium-bodied on the palate with flavors of wild strawberries and ripe black raspberries, blood, some crunchy red plums, a little bit of toasty oak spice, light licorice root tones, an extracted hint of woody bitterness and a touch of gravelly minerality. The overall feel is quite balanced and fine-tuned, not showing much intensity, but not coming across as understated, either. The overall feel is quite accessible and not particularly muscular, as the acidity feels relatively modest and the medium tannins contribute more to the texture than to the structure. The finish is long, dry and relatively light with savory flavors of tobacco, licorice root, some cigar box, a little bit of earth, light toasty oak tones and hints of tart dark berries.

A balanced and quite harmonious St. Julien that isn't flashy in any way, coming across more like a wine with medium-everything. In our lengthy tasting of fifteen 2000 Bordeaux reds, this kind of middle-of-the-road wine really doesn't manage to cut through in any way, but it doesn't really disappoint either. Seeing how smooth and gentle - but not soft or flabby - its structure is now, I really don't see the wine needing any further aging to soften it up. However, flavor-wise the wine shows relatively little evolution, so I can imagine it will continue to develop probably for another 10 years or so. If opened now, the wine really benefits from aeration, as it is quite reticent upon opening.

  • Good deep colour, just a very slight browning at the edges. Lovely Margaux bouquet, with a little spiciness. On the palate it is a big wine, very attractive to start with, but the (long) finish is still quite tannic. On balance I think this is probably still one to keep, in the hope that the tannins will further integrate. I wonder if it has enough fruit for the long haul, though? Try again in two or three years' time.

  • Right out of the bottle, this wine was singing. Gorgeous, almost explosive nose of cooked mushrooms, ripe cherries, wet soil, sous-bois. Just beautiful. Most of the nose carried over to the palate, with red currents joining the mix. What a lovely wine. Ended up decanting about 45 minutes, but didn't really need it - no change to the nose, palate smoothed out just a bit.

I recall having a bottle of this perhaps a year or two ago, and another a year or two prior to that, which both showed well, but not at this level. For me, I would say this particular bottle was at peak...somewhat surprising as I've had other 2000s that seem to need another decade or more to reach anything resembling this level of maturity. Certainly a wine to look for.

  • Last tasted 18 months ago, this is moving forward at a glacial pace and really needs a good few hours of aeration, and time in the glass to really come alive. That said, once open it is starting to drink well. Its previously muted nose has now blossomed and is rich with cherry, strawberry, cedar and tobacco. With time in the glass, it is starting to show a maturity on the palate and is complex with great depth and a 30+ seconds finish. It is still a little green and this youthfulness is particularly noticeable towards the end of the finish. I concur that this is probably the best Lagrange drinking at present, but I think this needs another 3 to 5 years to start hitting its peak drinking window.

  • Cork was in good condition for a 20 year old wine, hardly any saturation. Some sediment. Deep purple. Classic cigar box aroma. Soft velvety tannins. Beautifully harmonious balance. A great example of the charms of mature Bordeaux.

  • The 2000 Lagrange is my favorite vintage for the chateau. Pop and pour and it opened up quickly in 30 mins. Graphite, black currant, and tobacco on the nose. Round and sweet palate with medium stuffing and length. In a beautiful spot now. Very enjoyable.

  • Very nice showing. I know this wine from when it was young. Had it several times at ages 5, 10, 15 and always felt closed, did not reveal its aromas. Now after 20 years it finally got there. Wonderful nose right from the start with dark, cool blue fruit, forest floor, pine, peat. Dense palate remembering me more of a LLC style which borders Pauillac. Lucky for those who bought this at 40$ upon release and still have a few bottles left. Early drinking window. Now - 2030. 94+

  • A more convincing showing than last time (around 3 years back), this time from pristine bonded warehouse stock. Wonderful nose of strawberry jam, cedar wood, saddle leather, tobacco and musk - the palate is marked cassis with by a lovely acidic lift, again tobacco, orange peel and lime. It is a little lean overall but classic in that and while not the sexiness of 1990, and possibly not quite at the level of the 1996 which has a bit more stuffing also, this too is a very compelling classic claret from the millennial vintage. Nose 93-94, palate 91+ today, overall 92 with possible upside.

  • A good wine, nay - a very good wine. This was monolithic on opening and it took a few hours in a decanter to open up. Intense black fruit buffered by very present tannins that only started to recede with prolonged air exposure (drank this over 3 days). this should be able to go on for several decades more - Hardly any secondary traits. As mentioned above, a very good wine, but, for me, it doesn’t dance on the tongue or capture your soul like say a burgundy from a decent producer or like a grower champagne (or like Krug - one must never, ever forget Krug)

  • Very pleasing to see a lot of recent tasting notes that suggest this wine is being enjoyed ..... For me this wine represents very good value and allows one to go on the journey that Boudreaux does best. This wine was grippy and tannic and fruity in its youth and now mellowing into a mature, highly enjoyable old school claret. It’s not extremely complicated but it always passes the ‘how much of the bottle is left’ test ..... I have 7 more bottles, will likely do one a year from here.

  • Decanted for 20 min and drank over 2h. Nice but not as remarkable as my last bottle. Medium body, tannins integrated, time to drink. Having said that I do like Lagrange. More Pauillac in style than say a Barton or Poyferre, this has this concentrated dark, dry fruit I love. Some pencil lead - even if the last bottle was a touch better.

  • From a bottle purchased upon release and pristinely cellared, this wine was decanted and serially tasted after 2-3 hours of aeration. Still deep ruby/red in color, it delivers a package of Bing cherries, blackberries, graphite, pickling spice, lavender and pipe tobacco. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (listed as 13%) and with silky tannins, it now possesses a degree of elegance that was lacking when last tasted a little more than three years ago. Layered and dense on the mid-palate and lengthy on the back end, this is an outstanding St. Julien that will last longer than previously projected. Drink now-2035.

  • Deep dark purple. Dense fruit, good depth. Has power with finesse. Good tannic structure, typical of St Julien. Not a great deal of complexity for a 20 year old wine but still eminently enjoyable.

  • Wonderful Wine! hoping some very slight ageing on the edges, medium transparency. Scents of vanilla, pencil, forest floor, liquorice and red fruits at the end. Balanced mouth feeling: acidity and tannin bitterness are nicely in equilibrium with fine red fruit tastes ... This wine is in a perfect spot, but could still age perhaps a decade! I had it decanted, as at first it was a little 'sharp' but after 30 minutes it was nicely integrated! 2000 proves again to be a fantastic Bordeaux vintage! Super!!

  • Chateau Lagrange Wine Dinner at KOMA. Mr Sylvain Menard, business developer of Chateau Lagrange absence due to covid19 travel restriction. KOMA’s modern Japanese cuisine paired with St Julian classified Third Growth. Organised by Grand Vin.

Aperitif: 2016 Les Arums de Lagrange Blanc
Flora, peach, lemon. Aromatic bouquet and well balanced on the palate.

Miso Glazed Eggplant and DIY Spicy Tuna paired with Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2014 and 2015.
2014 is more enjoyable than 2015, as its in the matured drinking cycle and with medium- tannin. 2015 is starting to drink well with adequate decanting. Both vintages display spices, cassis, and black fruits.

Chicken Negrima and Unagi Robata paired with 2008 Chateau Lagrange.
2008 is a good drinking vintage right now. Although it has less tannin and acidity than in 2005 and 2000, it currently offers pleasure drinking. Smoke, coffee, tobacco, black fruits. Drink now to 2025.

Wild Mushroom Fried Rice paired with 2005 Chateau Lagrange.
WOTN. Firm tannin, high acidity. Chocolate, spices, coffee and tobacco. Can last easily another 10-15 years.

Prime Sirloin Steak 150g paired with 2000 Chateau Lagrange.
Full-bodied black fruits with tobacco, spicy, cassis, earth notes. In its perfect drinking window. The acidity and tannin go very well with the medium-rare steak.

Dessert Sesame Profiterole paired with whatever is left.

  • My favourite of 6 2000 clarets. The others all seemed quite lean and took time to come to life (do decant still even down to 5th growth level) while Lagrange had a warming openness and brambliness that was most attractive.

  • Bought on release.

It's been a long wait but this wine is now reaching its drinking window, although there is still a fair whack of tannin at the end. Fairly deep-red colour, with just little fading at the edges now. On the nose it's fruity and rich. On the palate it is well-balanced, showing warm ripe fruit and finishing in quite a long tannin-dominated aftertaste. Overall a good wine but a bit four-square, without the fragrance and complexity of the best clarets. It matched well with the roast lamb I served it with.

    No hurry to drink up.

  • I enjoyed this more two years ago. It's still full of ripe, juicy fruit, but as this becomes more jammified, so the lack of backbone and acidity becomes problematic. The first few sips are great - the red cherry and blackberry, with the St.Julien spice, jump out - but it becomes a little stodgy after a while. I'm not really sure where it will go from here, but it doesn't have the crisp edge the 96 has to the finish, so I'm not over-optimistic.

  • Starts with fading cherry fruit flavors and quickly goes to lots of funk. Medium bodied with good balance between the acidity and tannins. Lush, layered, and delicious. Ready to open and enjoy.

  • Near mature Bordeaux, dark ruby nose, fruit is starting to get muted due to aging, mostly cherries, blackberries and licorice but has lots of secondary and tertiary aromas such as leather, cigar box, smokiness, bacon, cured meats, cedar, flowers and spice along with laces of minerality. Palate is full body, well structured with high acidity but balanced and swath of tannins which are plentiful but well integrated. Finish is medium to long. I think $100 is good QPR for this wine

  • Smoke and bacon on the nose. Dark brooding flavor profile with cassis and menthol but backed by great freshness and acidity. Medium weight with good length with superfine tannins in the background. In a very nice drinking window now.

  • Bordeaux clearance session with Asparagus gang at Maison Dakota. Drank in Grassl 1855.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of black cherries, blackcurrant, black licorice, cassis, cedar. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), polished high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackcurrant, black cherries, licorice, cassis, cedarwood. Long finish.
Very good quality. Though seems to be rather unexciting at this point of development as it is not showing any tertiary elements yet. Polished style with ripe fruits of the vintage. Ageing slowly...suggest to wait another 4-5 years.

  • Initially muted with searing tannins. a two hour decant opened her right up, but i recommend three hours in the future. beautiful ruby-purple. Deep aromas of blackberries, cassis, violet and some cedar. Dense cassis and blackberry/boysenberry fruit with intriguing moca notes (44% Merlot). long, gorgeous complex finish. Although very drinkable now with a long decant, I'd hold for another 3-5 years.

  • Chateau Lagrange Dinner (Harvard Club, Back Bay): The nose shows a pencil, ash, cedar profile complementing fine cassis. Moderate depth, perhaps just a touch diffuse. The 2000s are maturing faster than you might expect for a "top" vintage and this is no exception. No crime to drink this now, particularly with a short decant. The 2000 Lagrange is very good, but Matthieu Bordes has further elevated the quality of the wines at Lagrange since 2006.

  • Sampled again after an 11-year interval. Medium garnet hue. Nose of copious floral notes, cassis, red plum, iodine, cedar. Bright Bing cherry, red currant, smoky earth, iron, and hints of tobacco on the medium-bodied palate. Firm but fine-grained tannin balanced by freshening acidity. Longer finish of red plum, stone, and deep grip. Clearly improving and evolving beautifully. From a 375.

  • So so much better than a bottle earlier this year, and based on other recent reviews, I bet that one was off. Here again peppermint, licorice, damp leaves, orange rind, and smoke on the bouquet; but then sweeter cherry to complement the orange marmalade and the backdrop of scorched earth and tar. Got more and more gorgeous over hours. Beautiful now with possibly a few years' upside and then plateau.

  • Last tasted a year ago, this has moved forward in another stage of its development, and is only a year or two away from full maturity. It is already a very approachable wine, packed full of cherry and cedar with crisp tannin on the palate. The wine has great depth and complexity on the palate, and its relative youth is most apparent on the finish which needs for the tannin to fully resolve. This is the best Lagrange approachable at present, and I agree with Purple Tooth, that we are still to see its best and it will continue to improve over the next few years. This was decanted for 8 hours and it paid dividends. 94+

  • Wine is so subjective and relative to your mood, and accompanying wines. This one, again and again, shows to be a classic Bordeaux, well rooted by its graceful and glacial aging due to high acidity and awesome tannin content. It seems to be in the window of phase 2, and I cant wait till it puts both feet into the door. I still believe that this is a great Lagrange, and while I have always hoped that it could mirror 1990 with time, its clear that this is mostly likely another 1996 in the making, with more elegance. The 1996 is still very well alive, so I think this will hit peak in 3 to 5 years. drink with 2 to 3 hour decant or wait a while more.

  • Wow! This wine has been stored in a climate controlled cellar since purchase 11-12 years ago. It's in great shape now, prime drinking window indeed, following other tasters. I have a soft spot for this estate, so keep that in mind while reading this. It was great immediately after pulling the cork - we decanted, but probably didn't need to. Initially, a big nose leaps from the glass revealing notes of cedar, leather, minerals, and bright red fruits (i.e., cranberry, strawberry). A little barnyard funk also complicated the experience (i.e., hay stacks), but in a good way. It is big, full-bodied, and plump in the mouth, showing no hard edges, and accompanied by a burst of mixture of dark and red fruits. With time, Asian spices, soy, cocoa, coffee bean, and a touch of chocolate added to the experience. Well layered, and impressive, with the tannin seemingly resolved. Compared to the 1998 Latour recently opened, the smooth, lush texture of this wine shined in comparison (though may not have had the overall power of the Latour), but was not quite as complex in the end (preventing a higher score) - although, the Latour needed 2-3 hours to open up while this was singing immediately and all the way until the last sip (2.5 hours later). My wife, on the other hand, put this a notch above the Latour...

  • Chateau Lagrange dinner (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Medium expressive nose displaying a hint of cassis, cherry, plum, noticeable green, mint, lead pencil, ash and earth. Medium concentration, silky and polished, bright acidity, nicely resolved tannins and a medium to long finish. The green is quite noticeable. It is ready to go but will remain enjoyable for awhile. Another wine for AFWEs and Chinon lovers.

  • Wow. This bottle is the exemplar of the saying that you should buy a lesser growth is a great vintage. While still rustic, this wine showed build swaths of intense fruit, tannins, earth and acid. Drinking beautifully right now and feeling fresh and youthful.

  • Bordeaux night at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): The nose here focusses more on the earth than the outright fruit, which makes this a little bit of an outlier as far as my impressions of 2000 go. Perhaps those impressions are/were wrong. In any case, this is a lighter, brighter wine, fairly open for business. A minute touch of oak here seems to give this a little more heft; it's certainly not obnoxious. However, I found the palate to be a little thinner and far more acid-driven than I would have expected.

  • Pnp at home. This is superb with just a bit of air. Dark garnet with a thin translucent rim. Classic Bordeaux profile with the fruit concentration of an excellent vintage. Animal notes and forest floor perfectly matching the layered dark fruit without a touch of sweetness, pencil lead, medium (-) tannins, medium to long finish. Wow - there are other great reds, but this is what Bordeaux is all about.

PS: Reading through some of the older tasting notes - had several bottles of the 96 Lagrange over the years, great wine, but this is two notches up.

  • Solid showing with a one hour decant. Color is dark garnet with just a hint of bricking. Nose shows prominent cedar and tobacco overriding dark fruit. On the palate this shows plush dark fruit framed solidly by flavors of tobacco and earth. Acidity still quite prominent on day 1-- this had quieted down on day two. Tannins very manageable. I actually think this wine is in a good place but definitely has some years to go.

  • Peppermint, licorice, damp leaves, and smoke on the bouquet; then very dark chocolate and mocha with orange marmalade; sour cherry and hazelnut; backdrop tertiaries of earth, mushroom, and tar. I wring my hands to give this five full points lower than three and a half years ago. My hunch is that it's between two better phases but there's a risk it's swerving crotchety.

  • Had this side by side a 1996 Lagrange. The 1996 was great and clearly better then the 2000. I thought I did notice the slightest TCA notes in this 2000 and given all the other comments on CT on this wine and this being a chateau I really love I am reserving my judgment here. Although I do note that I had a 2000 a few months back which did not show great and did definitely not show TCA notes - that bottle was rather a bit tired. I have a case of this stashed away from perfect provenance and am keeping my fingers crossed that I just got unlucky here twice.

  • This is still a solid 93+ and on its way up. Has traded in its thick p-coat for a suit but still has all the muscle underneath. Its far more elegant, refined, and sexy, while youthful and light on its feet. This is shaping up and shedding fat. I like it now with lots of air, and again, I think that this is very much in line with the 1996 vintage at this stage...can drink but I still think its a strong Hold

  • What a tasty wine, yet not a fruit bomb. Superbly elegant. Decanted so it could breathe for 2 hours, then drank it over 3 hours. No bricking, some wisp of legs. As it opened, the nose offered aromas of cassis, cherry, vanilla, tea, and ash, with hints of leather and tobacco leaf. Well-integrated tannins, which were smooth yet present, and perfectly balanced acidity. The flavors on the palate were cherry, currant, raspberry, and vanilla, with a hint of leather & spice near the end. The structure was not complex, but the fruit formed a firm base around the solid, soft tannins. If it had a tad more complexity, I would have given it a 92. Nice mostly long finish. This one was still on the up-slope, I can see that the tannins will carry it a few more years, but I would not wait more than 2 or 3 years if I had another bottle (I wish !). This was a very good showing from St. Julien, and I enjoyed it immensely.

  • Decanted 3 hours and consumed over following 3 hours. Healthy dark cherry color (no bricking yet). This surprised me a bit in that it drank shall we say fairly "tame", accessible with the decant. It was really very silky with well integrated tannins. Bit shy on the nose, some hints of tobacco leaf but not a memorable nose. It did wash down almost too easily on the palate, some good fruit there. Absolutely nothing wrong with this whatsoever, but for some reason I was expecting something more interesting. Elegant wine with no hard edges (normally I associate Lagrange with a bit more rusticity then elegance to be honest). It is definitely not up there with the 1990 for my palate (which I absolutely adore!), probably on a par with the 1996. I would give this 3 years before checking in, there are probably more tertiary goodies to come, it feels in a transitory phase between its early and mature drinking peak. Based on the bottle I had it will surely last another 2 decades, so I would advocated for patience. 91++

  • Cabs and Merlot or Blend from Anywhere (Heirloom, St.Paul, MN): Small pour. Consistent with my note from a year ago. Agree with Chablis28 on this too. Wood, graphite, black raspberry, cassis, earthy, firmish tannins.

  • Served at blind theme dinner. Not sure how much air this saw? This is getting somewhere and is really turning into a nice example of St Julien charm and balance along with the terrific ripe fruit from the 2000 vintage. I would love to grab 1-3 of these from somewhere for immediate drinking and down the road. Still a little tannin to resolve or perhaps a bit more air? Balanced and lifted; cherry, chocolate, cedar, tobacco and tea. 92+ I think this gets even more interesting in 3-10 years.

  • Well worth the wait, this is surprisingly forward and has entered its drinking window. Possessing a deep nose of cherry and cedar, it has good crisp tannins on the palate which have started to soften. It has complexity and good balance with a lengthy finish. For me it is the best Lagrange drinking at present, and great value for money. Needing a couple of hours in the decanter, the wine continued to develop in the glass, and undoubtedly will get even better over the next couple of years. 94+

  • Decanted for an hour before serving. Black fruit, tobacco, ash, pencil shaving and ink on the nose. Palate is silky and smooth with very precise black fruit and good acidity. It is starting to drink well now. My favorite Lagrange vintage. 92-93

Youthful colour. The more masculine vintage of the night.
Probably my favourite vintage of the night as well.

  • A certain sharpness, tannins significant but pleasantly furry, a somewhat watery edge both visually and on the palate. But penetrating and persistent, and good length. Popped and poured -- maybe it would have benefitted from a double decant. I like it.

  • From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this wine was decanted and serially tasted following four hours of aeration. It retains a youthful deep ruby/red robe and serves up aromas of black cherries, kirsch, graphite, pickling spice, pipe tobacco and a wisp of mint. Full-bodied, freshly acidic and without any heat from its 13% alcohol, it delivers flavors in line with the nose, supported by medium-weight, silky tannins. Layered and dense in the middle, it goes on to finish with good length. Although still youthful, this wine is now quite drinkable. Well-cellared bottles should provide pleasure for another decade or more. Drink now-2027.

  • Beautiful Bordeaux. First impressions are of lots or organic notes -- barnyard, leather and cigar. Dark fruit with med to big mouth feel. Excellent

  • First bottle out of a case purchased on futures; Decanted for 30 minutes and consumed over 2 1/2 hours. Right away, the 2000 Lagrange starts off with powerful aromas of cedar, saddle leather, blackberries and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, crammed with red and black fruits, minerals and very good acidity. The tannins make themselves known on the long finish, but do not detract from the overall enjoyment. My sense is that this wine is just entering its drinking window, and might improve with a few more years of cellaring. That said, it is in a nice spot right now, with a pretty even mix of tertiary notes and primary fruit flavors. Good stuff! 94.

  • Nose of saddle leather, cigar box, cedar, black cherry, black currants, and a touch of fresh barnyard, same on the palate, big body, lovely mouthfeel with mouth filling fruit, very tasty, at it's peak to me but should easily last 15 years, suggest you try it now as it is very approachable, in a slight dumb stage at the moment compared to previous bottles, almost elegant, long, long finish.

  • Bordeauxrot. Ja, wenn mich jemand nach der Farbe Bordeaux fragt meine ich einen Wein in eben diesem Reifezustand. Wahrscheinlich würde man "mittel bis dunkles Rubin" dazu sagen.

    Zedernnase. Auch etwas rotbeerige Frucht.

Am Gaumen seidige Textur, perfekte Balance. Rotbeerige Aromenspiel, schöner Säurebogen, seidige Tannine. Ein toller, eleganter Wein mit ellenlangem Finale.

  • An easy afternoon with close friends (@ PdV): Beautiful bouquet with dark berry fruits, cassis, beautiful oak, cedar, graphite and some horse stable smells. On the palate youthful and healthy dark berries, beautiful oak, some pleasant sweetness and good acidity. There is some pleasant bell pepper and bitterness. Concentrated and round as well. Overall a really beautiful and healthy, still youthful wine with plenty of room for the future, 93+

  • Served along with pork tenderloins, enwrapped in a bacon-spice-blend-strudel. Double decanted. Wonderful bouquet of blackcurrants, blackberries, plums, a lot of cedar wood, pencil point, scrub and slight earthy tones. Good concentration on the palate, with an elegant and balanced character, a well-integrated alcohol of 13%, vivid acid and ripe, fine-grained tannins. Overall medium-bodied. Notes of blackcurrants, plums, noble wood and fine spices on the palate. Long aftertaste, mostly carried by spices and black fruits. Absolutely classy and superbly matured Lagrange. Drinking rather well now, but should hold this level for at least 6 more years.

Zum Schweinefilet im Speck-Strudel-Mantel. Doppelt karaffiert.

  • Wine continues to improve, and has lots more room for ageing. Developing secondary notes of autumn leaves, tobacco, and cedar. Tannins starting to integrate, but still prominent. Well balanced acidity and concentration. A little hesitant on the front palate, but then opens up beautifully, and persists for a long time. Nice wine. 13% alcohol.

I have drunk multiple 1990 Lagranges and this one compares well, being slightly less refined and delicate, but more structured and full-bodied. I think this will get better for at least 5 more years, and then will be at it's best for another 10 years beyond that.

  • Classic nose of earth, cedar but also of black fruit. Vibrant bright dark color, no bricking to speak of. On the palate, what strikes is the wine elegance and balance with great core of fruits but a refine texture and a great finish. One of the best 2000 Bordeaux I've had. This would last a long time still but to me it is delicious right now.

  • Wow! Classical St Julien fruit, cigar box, cedar and exotic spices on the nose. In the mouth, the fruit is layered and sweet with tones of cassis, dark cherries, and figs. The oak is well integrated with the sweet tannins, and there is also a refreshing acidity. Long and enjoyable finish! This excellent wine is just in the beginning of its drinking window. Give it 5-10+ more years the cellar, and this will probably evolve into an outstanding Lagrange. An amazing effort! 95+

  • Tight with coffee driven nose initially. With an hour of air showed a great coffee, toast, flint, and spice nose, with red fruited palate. Classic St. Julian. Still has some coarse tannin and oak to integrate but is quite approachable and enjoyable now. Should be a little better in 3-5yrs.

  • Opened 2 bottles of this two hours before serving for my "2000 Bordeaux wine tasting". The star of the tasting. Both bottles were spectacular. Deep purple in color, fragrant nose, red current, blackberry, dark cherry, graphite, and spices. Little tannin, a bit of acidity but perfectly balanced. Nice long finish. Likely to have a number of years ahead, but can't imagine it being any better than now.

  • Opened 2 hours before dinner and decanted at dinner (grilled lam chops).

Showing some age - clear meniscus and garnet red color. My nose was stuffed up so if the nose was muted, it wasn't the wine. Earth, tobacco & red currants on nose. Palate had a lot more fruit - black cherry, currants (red primarily) and coffee grinds - medium body, medium+ acidity and strong tannins (integrated but still noticeable) with a very long finish. Great balance. Loved this. 92-93+

excellent lively dark fruits nose with oak-vanilla & tobacco notes

  • HDH auction tasting at Tru; 6/24/2016-6/25/2016 (Chicago, IL): A deeply earth-inflected bottle of Bordeaux. Somewhat tannic and dense still, but there is definitely some good material here -- secondary characteristics are just about starting to emerge. Needs time and air. Perhaps this doesn't fit totally with my 2000-is-ready-for-business narrative, there's no denying this is a classically well-made Bordeaux.

  • Opened and decanted at restaurant. A: Cedar, bark, berhbs, coffee/bitter chocolate, blackberries with some blueberries. P: Flavors follow nose with some earth, bark and mild tannin toward the end. F: Blackberries and coffee on the moderately long finish. Good weight and decent acid prevent it from being overdone. Flavors lean toward bass notes. A bit surprised that the tannin had resolved as much as it did.

That said, you could do a lot worst than drinking one of these. Definitiely charming but also a little precocious. Maybe a little too fleshy for my palate. • Last bottle from the case. Maybe I drank them all too young but while I enjoyed this, I found it a little bit monolithic and and unexciting. I drank the Pontet Canet 2000 a couple of days earlier and ranked it much higher (95 points). Not a bad wine but i just felt it needed a bit more of everything. More power, more fruit, more complexity.

92 pts

  • St. Julien - Paulliac - St. Estephe (Zurich): Notizen nachträglich erfasst.

Dark purple core, with nose filled with black currants, spice box, black licorice, graphite mineral, hint of herbs and tobacco leaf. Slightly acidic on entry to the palate, refreshing, medium mouth feel, with sweet fruits and spice notes. • Needs decanting, a good hour or so to hit its full stride at this stage. Once again and especially in good years like 2000 the lagrange performs well above its price range (~65£).
Still early in its drinkign window and with lots of life ahead, full of dark fruits and with a herby & light peppery nose. Similarly on the palate it has a firm solid structure, good ripe and solid fruit core. Just starting to show light signs of a secondary side but the main character is one of solid fruit. Proper little number. 92-93 and with room to improove

  • Really quite nice, good richness to the fruit, nothing too big here, sides are smooth, nice dark fruit, long in the mouth. Really good showing. Time in the cellar has caused this to show rounder sides and a silky mouthfeel. I really like the richness of fruit here. Nicely balanced with nothing sticking out. Very enjoyable. Many years left. • From 75cl, basically good cork, but pretty saturated and spongey. Decanted; didn't open up much over 2 hours. Big black-red wine; aromatically closed, but some hints of attractive cedar scent; broad sweet blackberry entry with just a hint of cassis; some concentrated licquorice action and surprisingly soft tannins on the mid-palate, however still a pretty thick and muddy texture; shortish, very slightly tongue-furry finish; a nice after-glow of ripe dark fruits. Very good wine, drinkable now but probably best starting in 4-5 years time. 90P(?)

  • I have two of these, and decided to check in on the first. My read on the bottle I opened was that this wine is simply not ready yet. Primary fruits still dominate, it seemed, with some hints of currants, damp earth, and cedar on the nose. In the mouth, 2 hours in the decanter were needed for some weight/depth to emerge, and some dark fruit flavors. At first, very little was forthcoming. I'd say it is only beginning to enter its drinking window, with many years to go before prime drinking is realistic. I plan to burry the remaining bottle until 2020 at the earliest. 91 for now, with several more points anticipated when fully mature...

  • Decanted half an hour before staring to drink it. Consumed in the following 3.5 hrs. The wine evolved quite a bit during that time period. It certainly improved with extended airation. Initially there was roast beef and a bit of pencil. On the palette it was quite acidic. As the night went on, the wine mellowed and became more expressive on the nose and palette. More pencil shavings and more typical St. Julien characteristics. Well balanced in concetration, acid and integrated oak. Enyoable now with a long decant, but it has a lot of improvement with aging. Best to wait a couple of years before opening the next bottle. Expect this wine to improve. Most likely to peak in a decade.

  • Tasted along side an excellent '90. Nose was very similar to the '90 with tobacco, leather, blackberries, dried leafs and coffee. On the palate it was a showing a little oak. My try and pick up some more and hold to see what it can become. Nice experiment tasting side-by-side with an elder sibling.

  • An easy afternoon with close friends; Bordeaux (@ PdV): Beautiful bouquet with cassis and a good dose of medium toasted oak. On the palate black forest fruits like cassis, licorice, a good amount of sweetness and beautifully round tannin with still a lot of power. Although early maturity now, extremely youthful still for a 13 year old wine. Still a long future ahead. 92+

  • Medium to dark ruby-garnet. Stunning nose of rosemary, ink, graphite, camphor, cedar, cassis and noble barnyard notes. Medium-bodied with firm, slightly drying tannins, good balance and a medium, somewhat harsh aftertaste, that comes as a sort of disappointment after the excellent nose and balanced palate. Might improve after another 5 years of cellaring or so.

  • Plum, red stewed cassis, aromatic with smoke, sweet tobacco, sous-bois; good soft entry, fine tannins, higher acidity with a long tangy finish; touch of cedar, mushrooms, gravel; medium body but good intensity. Fantastic balance and in a good place.

  • Notes of leaf, olives, tobacco and spicy cassis open to a soft, tannic, full bodied wine that finishes with elements of cocoa powder and fresh cassis. Time will probably add to this wine. I’d give it at least another few years.

  • Slow-O 6 hours, served single-blind at a CT offline. Youthful color, with aromas more subtle than bright, which made the palate all that more interesting in that it was on point, but clearly still had some room to grow. Didn't quite make it to my top 5 during the tasting, but out of (approx?) 50 bottles, that's not too surprising, I should think. If there is a takeaway here, it's that this needs another 4-5 years in the cellar so the tertiary development can hit full stride. recommended, 13,0% abv, drink thru 2023

note: this bottle was a very thoughtful Secret Santa gift from Good To Grape during the 2011 CT SS event -my prior tasting having been ruined by TCA, GtG thoughfully replaced my corked bottle with this. It seemed only right to share it with fellow CTers. So thank you, GtG.

  • Very, very good wine indeed, and I would say near its peak and it would be worthwhile waiting for another couple of years. Not yet bricking at the rim, the bottle was pristine and full up to the shoulder and near the cork. Dark violet color, and on the nose one is surprised by the intensity of the back spine, well matured fruits, still present oak, which by all means is not at all exaggerated like some of the other 'would want to be' top grand crus, lots of spice and a beautiful complexities which is still a bit at its dissonant stage yet, but very much promising to be consonant soon and all together. On the palate, wow... what a freshness!~ Quite frankly I was surprised to see the shining back spine uplifting its profound body effortlessly and yet the depth is very well all there. Deep, yet uplifting, powerful but without extraction. To me that would be a wine to look forward to in about a couple of years and to be enjoying the rest of the case for the next many years. Yum~~~

  • Monthly Tasting Group HWS #074; Bordeaux: St. Julien (By BS): Incredible bouquet with cedar, cigar box, graphite and of course dark forest fruits. On the palate beautifully ripe black fruit juice; mainly cassis. Good concentration and round, powerful tannin. Still very youthful. Even though I planned a few of my bottles to drink before 2016, I should keep a few until at least the turn of the decade. 92+

  • Provenance, purchased at auction in Oct 2012 from Brentwood wine auction. Cork was pristine with sediment at bottom, sediment encrusted the top shoulder and down the side of the bottle, demonstrating that the wine was impeccably stored. Brought to J and G Steakhouse in Washington DC at the W Hotel, decanted for a little over an hour before being seated for dinner with CJK and AGS. Color was dark red, and the noise was dominated by earth and mushroom in a surprising but pleasant way as I did not expect such a nose from a Saint Julian. Tannin was still evident over the first hour and a half of consumption but was counter balanced by the meal. Showed best with the hangar streak entree. The fruit was not evident in the nose until the last 30 minutes of the 2 hour meal, but it always was there “in the taste” showing red and black fruits. Although the wine is not multidimensional at this stage so as to merit a solid A score, it certainly has the potential to take on more interesting secondary flavor components in 5 years and thereby deserve a higher score. My suggested drinking window of a properly cellared bottle of the 2000 vintage is between 2018 and 2035, with the ability to be consumed now with a 3 hour decant. Final note, very impressed with the quality of this well cellared wine from Brentwood.

  • Still dark cherry in color. Enjoyable nose of plum, cigar box, earth and vanilla. Started a tad slowly, but evolved into a smooth balanced palate of blackberry, cassis, chocolate, earth and leather. Quite enjoyable. • Aerated to decanter at 2pm, served at 7pm. My second time with this in the past 6 months, and yet another solid performance. Full ruby core, no sign of age. Youthful, with plenty of character and obvious structure but so very tasty right now. This went head-to-head with 2001 Collosorbo Riserva and where the Brunello got better every 10 minutes, this seemed to plateau. Juicy black and red berries, cigar wrapper, turned earth and potpourri. Full-bodied, lively acids, precise, elegant tannins and a medium finish. This seduces but then seems more of a tease; bottle rest should help. One bottle remaining that I'll try and open before 2015. 13,0% abv

• Tour de Bordeaux; Next stop: St. Julien @ my place (Netherlands): This package is very complete. Beautifully ripe, with a nice jagged edge. Typicity, concentration and length are also quite exemplary. Very drinkable too, not to heavy. There's a lot of cherries and prunes, good oak-integration, interesting herbaceousness. Pure, clear and great to drink now or in 5 or even 10 years. 18/20

  • nose: perfumed and elegant nose filled with tones of dark cherries, cedar, tobacco, cranberries, spice box, cassis and some bits of floral tones. Very good depth with a somewhat regal sense to the nose

taste: medium/full bodied with good tannins and medium acidity. Balanced with excellent depth and classy tones of dark cherries, spice box, cedar, tobacco and some cassis tones as well. Somewhat plump across the palate with smooth transitions

overall: this was decanted for about 3 hours before drinking. Has a pretty dark ruby color that is a little bit lighter and an ever so slight bit of bricking. This is showing well now, but it should also develop even better with more time sideways

  • Hello winelovers...the 2000 chateau lagrange was again very good...its was refined...feminin style in smell(vere perfumed)and very smooth in taste...it is one of the wines from 2000 that where a bit evolved into drinking window, many 2000 wines are still very closed...it had complexety as well and in the glass it turned from medium body into a full bodied example of very fine wine...this wine will last a decade for sure...

  • Took several hours to really open up, and then several hours later lost some of its spark. Exciting, complex bouquet and a structure like beams and girders. The fruit here has finally unfolderd while, in the core, a very separate vector of autumnal notes emerges but fails to yet merge. This added complexity and great suppporting acidity contribute to an icy top layer of imperial fruit above sparse forest and bitter caramel.

  • Disappointing bottle. Decanted for three hours again although had only taken out of the wine fridge 1hr before opening this time round. Good strong nose if slightly acidic (could smell the bottle sitting in the decanter from a metre away as i walked through the house), reasonably similar impression in the mouth to previous bottle with strong red fruits, a bit of cigar box, good depth/structure and reasonably intense but this dropped away fairly quickly to a mildy unpleasent aftertaste leaving an odd bitterness/acidity. I don't think it was corked but am pleased i'd had a much better experience with this wine 48hours earlier otherwise wouldn't be looking forward to cracking into the rest of the case. Let's call it a flawed bottle. Will try to leave the rest of them for a few years.

  • First impression: lovely living colour, concentration, but not as deep as the Pontet-Canet, fresh fruit in the nose,
a balanced aftertaste and lots of ripe tannins. After four to five hours in the carafe the wine seemed to fall apart a little.
After three days in the fridge, however, the remaining wine had recaptured its starting profile of a young and promissing Bordeaux 2000.
I intend to retaste this wine next year.

  • Opened with 2002 Insignia for beef dinner & three different wine palates, so I wanted us to taste out two opposite wines. 1 went for Insignia, 2 went for Lagrange, myself included. Beautifully balanced at this point in time with lovely integrated tannins (very fine grit) and still retaining lift and lightness on the palate. Red fruits dominate, as expected, with slight oak smoke, forest floor and rhubarb blending in. Decanted for an hour, enjoyed over two. This bottle was empty that night, there was Insignia for the next evening...

  • Must have overrated this one quite a bit the summer of 09. This is still a very god St Julien with a fine mature nose of dark cab left bank fruit. Solid sweet fruits all the way, but nowhere near my first experience. Seems like the CT-community were right and I was wrong.

  • Blind tasted over dinner at Beddington's in Amsterdam. Nose was somewhat closed, young, tannic, a real mouthful. Some hint of licorice. Dense, and not balanced at this point. Not a typical 2000 St. Julien in my mind as it lacked the openess and balance I would have expected. Perhaps either much too young, or needing more time to open up out of the cold cellar, or both.

  • At San Antonio Wine Geek event. My #3. It has been nearly two years since my last bottle. Nose very solid, typical 2000 rich with cherries, coffee, and blackberries. Did not get vanilla in nose this time. Palate is still dense and powerful, with notes of dark cherries, fig, some earth. Sweet fruit still present with tannins slowly receding. Just great balance here with solid long finish. Long life ahead for this wine.

  • San Antonio Wine Geeks - The Great Gathering (aka: Steak porn/Wine Orgy); 11/5/2010-11/6/2010 (The Home of Steve Treu): Great example of a wine in a big year that has obvious modern influence and contains elements of a Napa cab, but retains its sense of balance and place. Big ripe nose, with bright red fruits, with burn toast and just a hint of funk. Complex palate, quite dense and concentrated but frsh, with smooth fine tannins. Moderate length finish with the fruit hanging on along with toast and just a hint of vanilla. Big, but balanced and refined, drinking well now but peak is far in the future. Glad I have a couple of these.

  • Decanted for an hour before drinking, then had over the next 2+ hours. Quite an aroma of tar, leather and dark fruits. Taste had blackberry and chocolate. Had with some pasta with marinara & meatballs - it was quite tannic at the beginning, but later it let up a bit. I would've liked to had the food with it after the tannins subsided a bit more, but still a nice wine. I am interested to see how this develops in the future with the fruit lasting while it softens up.

  • Consumed from half bottle. This continues to round out very nicely. It initially showed some of the sweetness that I saw in this wine in its early days, but with some air it just smoothed out into a seamless St. Julien with appropriate proportions of oak, deep purple/ruby color, black fruit and lead pencil. Very, very enjoyable drinking right now, but it will continue to develop nicely for another two decades. A very balanced wine. The best Lagrange ever?*

  • Still a very youthful wine, the 2000 Lagrange has lost some of that overt coffee laced oak of its youth, and now reveals more of its fruit. Time in the glass allows the aromatics to flesh out, and there's plenty of floral and dark fruit elements. Just a bit of earthiness (clean, damp earth, not funk) is emerging as well, but it's dominated by the fruit. The wine is a little hollow in the mid-palate, so I think it's still somewhat closed down. The longer the bottle was open the richer the wine was, so ether give this a couple of hours in the decanter or let it rest a few more years. There's a long way to go on this beautiful wine.

  • 2000 Bordeaux, 1999 Pierre Morlet (Porto Leggero): This was light, compared to the fullness of the Pape Clement. I picked up a little sulphur on the nose and a good amount of tannins on the palate. I much preferred the Pape Clement, which reached out and grabbed my attention versus the Lagrange, which seemed to wait patiently for me to notice it as the wallflower in the corner. This got no votes for first or second place.

  • MAYBE 6. This is still young. A mute bordeaux nose, even from the decanter, and seemed a bit hot (13%). There is reasonable acidity and soft but significant tannins. The fruit is low now and may come through. Hard for me to tell what will happen but possibly worth a few. Double-decanted and left for 3 hours before drinking.

Dark purple in the glass, almost opaque. • Decanted one hour. Dark purple, with a nose of currants, vanilla and cedar. Currants, plums and smoke on the palate. Concerned that it lost weight in the glass over four hours.

  • Ah, this is why I love Bordeaux. I don't think I've had this wine since shortly after it first hit the shelves upon release. This is from a .375, it is clearly a bit further along than the impenetrable 2000 Pichon Baron and 2000 Pape Clement that I had the other night-- at a similar stage of development, I would guess, as the 2000 Branaire Ducru I had recently. It has a long way to go but, like the Brainaire, is starting to display some classic St. Julien secondary nuances. When I last had this wine it was an infant, extremely sweet and sappy with tremendous potential. Now, nearly nine years old, this delicious, well-crafted St. Julien is starting to realize its potential, an evolution that will continue for more than two decades more.

  • Wife and I pulled our first bottle over dinner, roasted pork loin & corn soufflé. Decanted for 4 hours. Impressive nose, primarily vanilla, smoke, rustic cherry. Moderately dark purple color. On palate, very dense, chewy, with dark raspberry, fig. The finish is just flat out terrific. Corked and opened up for second day drinking, and it still took two hours to open up. Beautiful wine at this point, might even get better.

  • A wine that showed very well with the rest of the great wines enjoyed that same evening. Rich, classic Bordeaux nose, with anise and dark fruits over bretty terroir. Full body and rich mouthfeel, plenty of tannins remaining, and I would imagine a lot of life yet.

  • ending the year with bordeaux (ward's apartment, chicago): nose: very rich nose and is a great contrast to the 90. Obviously younger on the nose, but more of a creamy richness persists with black currants, black cherries, incense, spice tones, smoke, and cranberries. More complex than the 90, but the parts are still trying to work themselves out as opposed to being a melded, balanced, and cohesive unit that the 90 currently is

taste: very youthful with rich tannins. there is a lushness that pervates on the palate without overdoing it. Rich tones of black currants, spice box tones, bits of cedar, smoke, cranberries, and a rich black cherry core. Medium bodied that has a demure quality to it that wants to come out

overall: a wonderful lush and very young wine that needs another 5 years to really start to emerge. Good firm tannins, this wine has a lovely inner beauty that is present right now, but needs some coaxing to fully get what it wants to say. A great comparison between the 90 as I was able to see where it can go, and it has a bigger richness than the 90, so there is little doubt in my mind that it will end up being the better wine in time

  • This is unfortunately the first bottle of this I have had that has not been outstanding. I attribute it to an off-bottle, because previous tastings were all great. The fruit just did not shine as it has in the past, and could not get past a shrill herbal note on the palate. Still a very good, smooth long finish, but it lacked a little of the complexity I have found in the past.

  • inky purple, nose: currant and dark, stewed plums. hints of vanilla, chocolate. This was an outstanding wine. Young, but after about an hour, the tannins integrated nicely. Finish went forever. I would highly recommend this wine.

  • Popped and poured for initial taste. Decanted and server from decanter over the next hour.

Dark purple in the glass. No signs of bricking.

Strong nose of old world cab. Nice dark fruit, barnyard, leather, a hint of oak. Full-bodied on the palate with more dark fruit, spice, earth, and someone at the table picked up violets. Tannins are very strong and dominate the longish finish.

  • Yum. This wine is still rich and fruity, tasting very similar to when I first tried it. Massive cedar and graphite, and a great candied dried bing cherry on the front and finish. Another great classic from the 2000 vintage, enjoyed at 2 am on the University of Illinois quad where I spent a very happy grad school period.

  • As usual I would almost say. This is a rustic wine at the moment. Good barnyard. A lot of oak and juice. Cherries. Still very youthful. The combination of barnyard and good acidity reminded me of Cos, but this wine is more friendly. Wait for at least 3 - 5 years, or enjoy it in its youth.

  • bordeaux tasting (Binny's Highland Park): nose: great nose with a dark cherry core that is filled with barnyard tones, damp earth, leather, along with bits of spice and pepper tones

taste: plush feel on the palate with dark cherry, damp earth, leather, pencil lead, and some barnyard

overall: an utterly beautiful wine that will just get better. Great silky feel with a wonderful long finish

  • Second time in a short period that I taste this wine and now even showing better than couple months ago...We have a winner...It's unbelievable how smooth this wine is already...It's complex tipically Saint Julien style but with big extremaly soft fruit buttery with an unbelievable finish...Bravo Marcel Ducasse and good retirement...this wine is so good it will stand against much bigger wines...www.everyoneweb.com/chateaujochen

  • Purple. Very complex bouquet with butter, coffee, toasted oak, ripe forest fruits and a lttle good barnyard. Full bodied, very juicy and still very young. At this moment the bouquet is the most interesting part, but this wine will be a beauty for many more years.

  • From my private cellar, drank without decanting, in the new Riedel line Vitis, awesome glass.Red ruby colour with youthful signs.
The nose is very complex, layer of red fruits (bitter cherry) cedar, red pepper, roasted herbs, wet earth, black pepper, vanilla and chocolate.
The entrance is silky with mature tannins, good balance, round and nice acidity.
The final is very long.Lagrange 2000 can be cellared for several years,it'll gain even more complexity.
Really a remarkable value, definitely great stuff!!!!

  • A half bottle from my cellar did not show as well as the last few I've had. The wine was more herbal and narrowed in the middle than I remembered it the last few times I've had it. Perhaps it is going through an adolescent phase.

  • Decanted 3-4 hours. I remember drinking this wine early 2004, and thinking it had a lot of baby fat (big mouthful of smooth dark fruit that seemed to be concealing some big tannins). This time around it seemed a little smaller, and very quiet. Very drinkable and smooth, almost merlot like-but I got the sense it was in hibernation. Will be fun to watch this evolve. 92+ for now

  • From a 375. Uncorked and aired in a glass. Brilliant dark garnet. Nose of cassis, smoke, earth , black grapes, and raw meat. Medium-bodied but full of red fruits and anise, with a glycerin-like sleekness. Lots held in reserve but extremely promising. Tannins still quite firm. Finish already very interesting. Hold for 4-plus years.

  • (at The Modern – NYC, from 375ml) Garnet / purple though not opaque. Very Medoc like nose of cassis and smoke. Pure and full on the palate. This is a very nice 2000 that is still an infant, but a pleasure to drink now in this format. This has the stuffing and balance to only improve with another 10 years of bottle age. (93+)

  • From half bottle this wine is opening nicely and gives pleasure now. The nose shows dark fruits, herbs and cassis. The palate is youthful but deep in flavor with ripe, sweet tannins. Should improve from here.

  • Tar, smoke, carmel, blackberry, and coffee on the expressive nose. All sorts of complex and mingled flavors on the dense, sophisticated palate; but it only barely opened over three hours. The finish is long and ripe.

  • Decanted ~90 minutes. Tight and tannic, everything seems to be in order, but this really needed more air.

  • Decanted for about one hour. Dark carmine. What a nose!!! I can't describe this comlexity. Leather, melted licorice, white chocolate, tar, tobacco, cherries, cedar, plum, oaky vanilla, wet earth, and much - much more... On the palate is full - bodied, very balanced, with well integrated tannins. Cherries, black fruits, cocoa, cofee, green peper and cinnamon, are mixed up perfectly. A nice long finsh of 40 sec makes this wonderful St Julien a masterpiece. Very strong effort from this chateau to drink absolutely. It is good to wait for 3 - 4 years before drinking and enjoy it for the next two decades.

  • An easy afternoon with close friends. 2007-02: Bordeaux: St. Julien & Pessac. (@ BV): The winner of the evening. Very distinctive good barnyard, lead pencil and black currants in the powerful bouquet. Enormously juicy taste of dark forest fruits, lead pencil, laurel and liquorice. A truly great wine already, but with a future as well.

  • Drank with nephew ATBridge with grilled burgers (first cookout after a brutal winter). Decanted and drank immediately (couldn't wait!). Dark purple color. Expectedly still fairly tannic, but wonderful blackberry, tobacco, earth nose, with a classic Bordeaux palate -- cassis, cedar, graphite. Despite the high tannins, the fruit really came through. A big, not very austere wine. Young but enjoyable now and will only get better and better.

  • TB: Had at a Bordeaux tasting along with an 00 Calon Segur. This was triple decanted 2 hours prior to tasting. Dark purple with very little lightening at the edges. Tighter than the Calon Segur showing some earthy characteristics. Nice mouthfeel with a palate showing cherry. Seemed a bit overly tannic. Let em sleep, but definitely has the structure and components to be a nice wine.

  • Rubi color still showing some purple on rim. Blackcurrants and some toasted notes. Great freshness and mouthfilling fruit on the mouth. Tannins are still showing their youthfullness, it´s still climbing up. Wouldn´t open any of this now, wait at least another couple of years.

Excelente.

  • Another 375ml popped and poured. Really enjoyable from the get-go. Complex aromas of dark fruit, earthy barnyard, cigar box, and a hint of chocolate. Palate is full bodied with ripe red and black fruits, and a long, spicy finish. Tannins are firm and smooth...started to clamp down a bit more with air.

  • Monthly Tasting Group HWS #009; Bordeaux blends worldwide. (By me): Deep dark blood red. In the bouquet wood, dark ripe fruits and toasted. A lot of sweetness in the taste. Full bodied and broad. A lot of wood, leather, cigar box and beautiful bitterness. A superb wine with a great future.

  • Without decanting the wine, straight to the glass, let the wine open for about an hour in the glass, the body is huge, tons of smooth tannins, fruits all around of course and perfectly matched with the tannin there, deep deep purple in color, still in it's infancy, beautiful craftmanship! An extraordinary Chateau-Lagrange!

  • Really dark purple. Has closed up since the previous bottle in July; still enough fruit to be enjoyable now, but I'll be laying off this one for a few years.

  • This is wonderful. Like the Leoville Barton 2001 which preceded it, cedar and blackcurranty, but somehow rounder and deeper. Terrific now and presumably will open out in the future.

  • Decanted for 1.5 hours. Tasted about 3 weeks after an earlier bottle, this one shows more of the characteristics one would expect of a 2000 St. Julien at this stage. Considerably more austere than the previous bottle, it shows an unmistakable nose of cassis, clay minerals, and graphite. In the mouth, the slightly austere tannins and minerality dominate at this stage, with the ripe fruit that was so prominent in the earlier bottle taking a back seat. The structure for aging and the class of this wine are still evident, but it definitely needs to sit for another 6 years or so.

  • Dark ruby red. Explosive nose of bright ripe fruit, oak, and damp earth right out of the gate, with all components showing excellent integration and balance. In the mouth, a lively mid-palate of dark fruit, spice, saddle leather, and damp soil, followed by ripe tannins and lingering clay minerals coating the mouth on the finish. Something about this classic St. Julien melding of dark ripe fruit, oak, and minerals taps into some visceral, deep-seated genetic fount that eliminates any possibility of real objectivity on this wine. If I had to be objective, I would rate this one a solid 93, subjectively a 96. What a beautiful expression of the St. Julien terroir. This wine is drinking much better than one could reasonably expect at this early stage.

  • With a nice steak, I decided to commit a bit of infanticide. Dark ruby purple color, huge nose of smoke and red ripe fruit with a hint of vanilla. In the mouth, the wine is concentrated with a drizzle of chocolate and black fruits in abundance. The wine is big, but not overly so. The tannins give a smooth mouthfeel and a sweetness only found in the ripest years and lead to a long 25 second finish. I must get more!

  • So - is it as good as the rumours say? No, it is better!! Blue-ish appearance in the glass, with a huge bouquet on notes of shoe-plish and tar - almost like a Barolo. After about thirty minutes the bouquet went more in the direction of roasted coffee and cigar box. Fresh, well-defined, structured and large bodied in the mouth. Packed with sweet, ripe tannin, and a deep, dense core of fruit. This is simply superb with many facets, excellent balance and long, long aftertaste.

  • Tasted unblinded at the Vintage Wines, Ltd. wine bar. Bright disc. Opaque purple robe with violet rim. Clean nose, showing intense aromas of coffee, chocolate, currants, pine nuts and vanilla. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, big ripe tannins and similar flavors as for the nose. Long, smooth finish. Nothing vegetal here despite >2 hours in the glass.

  • Tasted unblinded at 2000 Bordeaux horizontal at the home of Marshall Banker. Bright disc. Opaque purple robe with violet rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense plum, kirsch, vanilla and blackberry aromas. After two hours of aeration, a slight vegetal note enters the picture. Full-bodied on the palate, with ample sweet tannins, medium-to-high acidity and similar black fruit flavors as for the nose. Long, slightly tart finish.
