93 Points

Sunday, May 24, 2020 - Transitioning without a doubt. This wine is on lock down for now, it shows tight and slightly acidic. After two days it never really opened up. All of the stuffing is present in this wine, but It will require more bottle time. Nice nose, soft violets and a dark purple blue color. A big Cab with nice blue and blackberry fruit, cassis, dark currants, and tart cranberries have crept in on the palate profile. This 2016 shows nice extraction, beautiful fruit purity with a hint of oak, but it is on a journey right now. 93+ Points and unresolved, a hold for now.

Wish I had access to 5 cabs made from each of these great vineyards every vintage so I could follow them all closely to see if there are trends that emerge year to year. If I've noticed this on all the '16 LPVs recently, then where are all the MissHoppers from '16 drinking? Or the Dr. Crane's? Would be good to know if on average the Hoppers were 3 months behind the LPVs, and still drinking well or if the Crane's were 6 months ahead and already emerging from their slumber? Or, are all '16s just in general hitting this same point right about now?

5/24/2020 10:26:00 AM - Yackman - I had a bottle yesterday and experienced the exact same thing. I re-read my previous review and went, "huh." I do have 1/2 of the bottle for tonight and hopefully it's better. It wasn't bad it just wasn't great!

5/24/2020 11:34:00 AM - As usual nice note. It’s been almost a year from my last bottle and I was thinking about popping one in light of the upcoming Quivet offering. Thankfully you beat me to the punch - I’ll let this vintage lay down a little longer. Take care.

5/24/2020 3:45:00 PM - NickRut, that’s why I decided to crack a 2016 to see where it’s at. This wine started out at a high-level in it’s infancy, but it has taken a path that will require some time to resolve itself. Yes, l will buy the 2018 LPV, how much? Not really sure yet.

5/24/2020 4:03:00 PM - Interesting observation/question Mark1npt. I recognize that the modern Napa Cab vintages seem extremely approachable in their beginnings but tend to back off after some time in the bottle, within several months or the first couple of years anyway. I tend to enjoy the youthful expression, the energy, the cream de cassis, blueberry liqueur affect, black licorice and asphalt notes that are present in the early development of the LPV’s and that have been detectable in the Myriad /Quivet labels. I will hold my remaining 2016’s and follow the notes on Cellar Tracker closely to track it’s progression and to determine a better drinking window.

5/24/2020 4:08:00 PM - #1Winelover, those are my exact sentiments as well. I really like these wines early on within the first couple of years. I suppose I’ll probably enjoy them with an a smaller drinking window. ‘ If the wine is showing great, why wait’?

5/24/2020 4:18:00 PM - Badmonkey, it sounds like #1Winelover had an experience that was more positive than mine. Personally, I’ll keep track the experiences of those l follow on Cellar Tracker and note their comments before I try another bottle.
