Floral nose along with oak and dark red fruit. Palate came across as primarily old black fruit, oak and slight tannins. It had good weight and for certain, good winemaking but just didn't feel like it was rocking as well as it should have. Don't know if this was an airtime issue or not? But it seemed like I should have liked it better, came across as somewhat flat and one dimensional.
California Wine Weekend; 12/1/2023-12/3/2023 (Mos Eisley Cantina & Waterhouse Restaurant): Nose: Blackberry, cassis, graphite, turned loam and leather. Just a bit of a lavender and herb note. Palate: This is rich in the mouth, but less so than the Bryant. Giving black fruit in layers, and nice floral and gravel notes in between. Finish: Penetrating black fruit notes, cigar, loam and lavender.
I loved the fresh garden notes that intertwine with the sweet fruit here. It is culty, but the Ric Forman influence can be seen as it has the most Bordeaux like aspect here.
The 1997 flight was prepared as a slow ox for about an hour before the tasting began.

Fantastic bottle. One hour decant. Initial brett funk blew off quickly. Lingering light tannins and acidity, with cassis and tobacco notes dominating. Nice fruit, but well into secondary phase. Great showing for a CA superstar in a classic year. Ten more years before it will start to fade.

The 1997 Madrona Ranch initially was one dimensional with a nose dominated by Brett. An extended decant did nothing to tame the Brett but did help bring forth additional complexity including blackberry, blueberry, graphite, and milk chocolate. Soft, with resolving tannins, like many of the better wines of this vintage, there's considerable richness here yet everything finds balance. This would be excellent if not dirty; instead, merely very good.

Definitely well into its secondary phase. Two hour decant at cellar temp. Great gamy nose full of black fruit and earthy tones, with pencil shavings and licorice too. A small amount of brett, but not at all off-putting and it actually adds to the appeal. Medium bodied, but super complex and with a finish that goes on for hours. Could still taste the wine this morning after two glasses last night. Based on this bottle, the wine has another decade to go, but it's darn good right now.

Bottle bought and stored a while back 20 years old Napa vintage 1997: after hearing many "critics" saying it was a hot year drink up sooner than later. Decanted 1 hour. Nose awesome some Bordeaux hints (not sure whether a tiny petit verdot was in the mix) wine is delicious, dark fruit, all integrated and very little tannins left. For the price offered nowadays, this will be a major pass for us.

For a 20 year old wine, this is aging extremely well. Oak very nicely integrated. And the fruit was pure and rich, with black cherry, blackberry, and plum surrounded by spice, cedar, vanilla, and fresh flowers. Full-bodied and powerful. The acidity was high, but in a way that created a nice freshness. While drinking extremely well now, this wine will certainly benefit from a little more time in the cellar.

Oak, licorice, incense, barbecue smoke and blackberries on the nose. The wine is incredibly lush, displaying opulent textures and a sweet, ripe, fruit filled palate with a pleasing long finish that fills your mouth with the essence of pure, ripe fruits.

There was sediment in my wonderful bottle! Fully ready to drink, it was a thing of beauty. Spicy and interesting, the cab franc being noticeable and the dark berries were there as well. Bravo to David ABreu and his team.

Too young. Needs more time. Great dark California cab with plush fruit, wrapped with tannins and nice acids. Not a jammy fruit bomb which is good. Will get more complex with time.

Rich, concentrated, pack and stacked with layers of perfectly ripe, black and blue fruit, vanilla, cocoa, truffle, barbecue and licorice. The great thing about this wine is, the balance. There is so much fruit, flesh and flash, yet it’s all in harmony and does not go over the top with its flamboyant, silky, sensuous style. This Cabernet Sauvignon represents everything great about California wine.

The 97 Cult cab/Meritage dinner at RIS in DC: The nose shows very sweet fruit but still maintains the freshness. Crushed blueberries and black berries, Cab franc like perfume, crème de cassis, milk and chocolate. The palate displays sweet chewy fruit, excellent concentration, hedonistic silky texture and impeccable balance. I guessed Maya.

x-pensive winos dinner @ josie's in santa monica. i was indefferent about this wine. i've certainly had better bottles, and i am ready to say that many 97s aren't what they used to be. not just from this tasting, but by general experience. yes i still get some good bottles (like the colgin in this tasting), but i don't see the upside to hoping for such an isolated incident. i have very few 97s left in my cellar, and i'm happy about that. this was decent for 20 minutes, and then it drifted off into indistinction.

Decanted 3 hours and drank over two. Not much nose, abundance of gorgeous fruit, tannins very present (and to my liking). Finish diminished after 20 seconds. This is great wine styled like Bordeaux.

A lot of sweetness and lavender in the expressive bouquet. Also cassis. On the palate also a lot of sweetness, but also firm and unfriendly tannin. The wine is nice and special, but so different from the bottle I tasted in 2008. Is this an off bottle, or is the wine in a wrong stage? With this age I can hardly believe the latter. What to think?

California tasting @ Restaurant Savelberg (Netherlands): Intoxicating fragrance which is almost over the top. Almost, but not quite. Very dense, ripe, toploaded, almost ester-like bouquet of blueberry pancakes, vanilla essence, baked bananas and tropical flowers (orchids). Luckily, on the palate this has much more freshness than the nose suggests. It even has some elegance and grace. Very pure, very dense, slightly hot, a magnificent wine. 18.5/20

California 'cult' lunch at Spago with Leve (Los Angeles, CA): This was a lovely, typical bottle of Abreu, extracted and intense without showing any roughness.
