Medium garnet and shows younger than its 15 years. Nose somewhat muted; dried cherries, savory/earthy. The most lasting impression is how smooth, balanced, and sophisticated this wine is. Subtle cherry with savory and spicy back end. Wonderfully fine, smooth tannins, and a long, lingering finish. Such a treat!

Nose of sweet cinnamon cherry . Tannins are fine and well integrated and the palate is complex with red fruits, Dusty minerality with a incredibly smooth mouthfeel. Long finish. Just a fabulous bottle of barolo in a very nice place. My last 05 ---- wish I had a few more! Opened about three hours before I poured the first glass then drank with my good friend Bret over the next 2.5 hours. Nice way to spend an afternoon!

Clear medium garnet; clean medium plus nose of tar, cedar, dried cherries, soil and savoury herbs; dry; high acidity; high tannins; high alcohol; medium body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn with addition of cocoa; long finish; drink now - tannins are crazy but fruit has fallen away; outstanding wine - definitely a treat

This wine is spectacular. Followed it over six hours when, sadly, it was gone. Shared it with a friend and we did a Skype tasting. The way of the New World. The aromatics are so elegant - pine, black cherry. Spice box or Christmas spice - never been sure what those meant but it seemed that way. In the mouth, it’s tart cherry, black cherry, exceptionally fine-grained sweet tannins. Exceptionally lengthy finish during which the tannins follow a bell curve and at the end, when dropping off, the tannins give way to lingering acidity. Lush, light-bodied mouth feel. Undertone of earthiness late in the evening. Truly an excellent wine.

(Barolo cru blind tasting) Full and rich nose. Very spicy and very flowery. Lovely! Christmas spices and cloves. Lovely depth. Spices, sweet cherries, orange peel and licorice. Very complex with an haunting perfume. Medium-fullish, rich and balanced palate. More tannic than full. Very good grip. Balsamic, muscular and complex. Spices, sweet cherries, orange peel and licorice. Full-force ahead, perhaps lacking a tiny bit of elegance. But clearly WOTN, even though 2007 Sandrone Cannubi Boschis probably has more upside and will be the winner in the long haul.
Wonderful spice and brilliant fruit still dazzle. Wine has great balance and has integrated superbly. Tannins are silky and easy. The wine was a nice match to roast beef and parmesan salad. A really spectacular Barolo.

Barolo night with Bret and Greg. 3 - 4 hour decant. Drank with 06 sandrone le vigne sibi et paucis. When opened the sandrone had the nicer nose but after several hours the conterno overtook it. Flavors of cinnamon cherry, leather and other things I'm not good at describing. More tannic than the sandrone, which we liked, but not quite as velvety. Both had outstanding mouthfeel and finish. Two of us had them equal but Bret has the best pallet and he gave the collonello the edge. Hard to imagine barolo being much better than this but the joy is in the eternal search! 96--97

Decanted by Josh at home I believe for several hours which really helped make this sing. Medium dark ruby red color. Likely sees a little time smaller cask? Aromas of; roses, berries. Shwos a striking balance between richness and classic nebbi structure. Excellent depth and range of nebbi flavors such as dark cherry, mineral spice, herbs, and underbrush. Really dug this blt and wasn't necessarily expecting to. 93pts+.

Wine is really firing on all cylinders. Drank after 4 hour decant. Nose was mainly cherries and a bit of nutmeg. Tastes of Black fruits and a little oak are well integrated. Just the right amount of dryness on the finish. Doesn't need food but worked well with our red sauce pasta dish. Even better on day 2. Fully integrated.

An outstanding barolo! This was the wine of the evening for me. Still tannic but very well intergrated. Great mouth feel and very long finish. Lots of complexity. Blew away the darioush cab, but my tastes do run towards brunello and barolo wines.

Working with wine 2014 seminar 2 - piemonte (???): On the nose the wine has aromas of rose, meat/blood, plum, spice, tar and there are rich autumnal elements here - damp leaves and touches of fungi. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acidity that adds lovely juiciness to spiced plum notes, surprisingly fine tannins and slight chocolate and cream notes, slight tar and rose replace these on the persistant and long finish. Quite subtle for what it is. Very nice.

More consistent with earlier bottles, and not the prior bottle, which was significantly better than the others. For what it's worth, however, this one began to wake up after a couple of hours in the decanter.

Decanted for 1.5 hours before service. Based on the previous two recent bottles, which seemed a bit closed, I wasn't ready for this one, which was singing from the get-go. Rose garden aromatics, saturated and complex palate, a touch of mid-palate sweetness coupled with acidity and mildly assertive tannins. A really pleasant surprise, and I hope it's indicative of what's to come with a few more years...

Similar to the last bottle from a couple of months ago, but this one had more pronounced rose petal aromas. I really should just let these hide away for a few years, but on a snowy night with a nice stew on the table, what are you going to do.

Decanted for four hours before service. In the glass, clear dark ruby red shading to auburn at the rim. On the nose, a bit of high-toned crushed cherry, roses, and a touch of truffle. On the palate, smooth texture, with cherries, violets, oak, and a secondary note of prunes. The palate was relatively muted; if anything, I would have expected more tannins and acid, so perhaps an off bottle? We'll see. That said, there is clearly some class here waiting to emerge.

Barolos (Becky's House): Medium dark red color. Decanted for 3 hours. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Nose is still a bit tight on pouring, opens gradually over 30 minutes, becoming floral, subtle mushrooms, cherry, briar, vanilla bean. The palate shows cherry, briary, vanilla bean, firm tannins, tart fruit, nice finish. Young, but well balanced. My #3 WOTN. 92(+)pts.

First a warning that pop-and-pour is no good for this wine. It was still tight after 2 hours in a decanter so we decided to pour through a Vinturi from the decanter because who can wait another 4 hours. Nose has raw meat with a spice rub and toast cedar. In the mouth it is absolutely velvety with licorice, tobacco, and dried earth. I usually like my wines on the fruity side but this baby really shines with spices, tobacco, and mud.

At risk of going against the crowd, I found this a little thin and closed. Drank this to get a sense of the 2007's I'm holding but was disappointed. Perhaps a one off. The 2007 standard Barolo by the same maker was far better than this 2005 colonnello. Perhaps now best left for a few years.....

So… Here we go! A stunner, a real killer! This Barolo is great, and its drinking really good now. It’s always such a pleasure to drink Aldos wines, as to me there is such a resemblance with Burgundy in the way he makes his wines. You can feel the love and work and the skill that has been put into each and every bottle that leaves his winery. Like a true Bourgogne winemaker. This is the equivalence to a Grand Cru wine for me. Decanted for approx 2 hours prior to serving. Already after pulling the cork I could tell that this would end up as a top contender to become wine of the night in tonight’s tasting. And it won. This is a deep and complex wine, with several layers that just keeps evolving during the evening, a peacock tail of flavors and scents. A full-bodied wine, yet soft like an angels kiss, with fruit and tannins in a perfect combination. Cherries and morels, with coffee, chocolate, earth & minerals, some orange peels and licorice. This is a magnificent wine, and I’m really happy that I have a bottle left in the cellar. If you can find this, buy it and enjoy!

Had it at a dinner "against" Robert Groffier "Les Sentiers" 2009. A tremendous wine with a long taste. Some cherry on the palate with fine tannins nice as silk. Some stable on the nose. Wine of the night!

Aldo Conterno Tasting: Colonnello is a sophisticated brunette to a playful fun-loving Cicala. More subdued, with a darker, cherry and plum fruit profile, a less tannic, more close knit, burgundian wine. It is amazing to see side by side such different expressions of nebbiolo from the same producer. A lovely wine now, it will undoubtedly reward patience.

I tasted this in 2009 at the vineyard and it was amazing then and has only gotten better. The nose on this was subtle at first with scents of flowers and porcelain (very clean). The palate was crisp and the tannins were bitter. After an hour, the fruit came through and it was like an explosion. By the time the bottle was finished, cherries were dominating the nose and palate and the mouthfeel was amazing with a lengthy finish. I can not wait to see what more is to come from this.
I had such a great experience at Aldo Conterno's winery, and I am sure that I am biased with with reviews of their wines because of that. With that, these wines are the reason why I am passionate about this hobby and cherish every taste that I am fortunate enough to try from them.

Helt underbart vin!
Fick ca 2 timmar i karaffen innan middagen.

This wine is still improving. An additional year in the bottle only mellowed it a bit. I will sit on the last two bottle for 2 years and see how it goes.

Great potential but way too young. Drink beginning 2016.

Complex wine with cigar, raspberries, blueberries, menthol and tar. Medium to long finish and still tight. Should age this five to ten years.

Remember you don't drink the label

At risk of going against the crowd, I found this a little thin and closed. Drank this to get a sense of the 2007's I'm holding but was disappointed. Perhaps a one off. The 2007 standard Barolo by the same maker was far better than this 2005 colonnello. Perhaps now best left for a few years.....

So…
Here we go!
