2021 Martinborough weekend with Kai, Marion and friends (Wairarapa, NZ): Served double blind with the Twomey. Good intense, dark ruby. Aromatic black cherries, smoky, charred, fatty bacon, beef stew and nascent dark floral perfumes. On palate, more bonfire smoke and bacon fat with some espresso. A huge volume of largely dark berry fruit, cherries and some plums. I recognised the quality but – unlike many of the others – thought it really needed 5+ more years in the cellar. Ideally, hold until 2026+. (93-94+).

A bit shy on the nose but some sweet black fruit came through. Took about 2 hours to open on the palate but more sweet fruit and some surprising green notes.

Heidi's Gang: Back in Saddle Again (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Dense black fruits on the nose, bacon fat, mint, charcoal. The palate is full bodied, black fruits, oak, meaty, bacon fat, and ash on the finish.

Pop & poured, followed over a couple of hours. Starts green and never went anywhere. Underneath the medicial/herbal vegetal notes, you could taste the dark cherry fruit, but nothing else shows. Maybe it just didn't get enough air? On Day 2, more medicinal vegetal notes. Bummer, maybe it's just bottle variation...

Medium ruby. The nose is smoky, really smoky, a bit too domineering for me, never really died off. The palate is better, medium density, elegant tannins, good balance between ripeness and freshness in this warmer vintage. Needs some more time to settle? Aroma 90, Palate 95. To be revisited.

Zachys Capital Collection Pre-Auction BYO Wine Dinner (Fiola Mare - Washington, DC): Small glass, brief note. Served alongside the 2006. This comes across as so ripe right now that it is difficult to fully enjoy, even if its richness, density and length can easily be appreciated. Very good potential, but this needs lots of time in the cellar, 2024-.

Surprisingly closed nose, ripe blackberry, scorched earth and stem. Strong stem note but I believe this was destemmed. It remains a bit disjointed. and tight, never revealing the beguiling decadent fruit. Excellent concentration, nicely layered fruits and medium finish that ends with strong stem. Oh well.

Restaurant Fred (Rotterdam, Netherlands): Wonderful fresh red fruit and earth aromas. On the palate more high quality pinot juice and earth notes with soft rounded tannins. An exceptional wine of finesse with refined length that lasts and lasts!

Leiden in Rotterdam at Fred: Smokey, elegant nose, sweet, sous-bois. Taste cassis, still a bit on the young side, but complex and balanced. Very elegant and sexy wine. My red wine of the night!

Cellar Visit with Denis Bachelet (Gevrey-Chambertin): Barrel tasting at Domaine (taste was a blend in probably final proportions of new, neutral oak). Really standout wine in a sensational vintage. Black cherry, blackberry, chocolate and fresh herbs on nose. Same fruit some through on palate with sensational herbs and spice. Incredible balance already for a wine with this incredible extract and density. Powerful, long finish shows great fruit and character of perfectly roasted meat.

I usually love Bachelet Charmes but this bottle didn’t deliver. Maybe heat damage but consensus among group was it was too rustic with fruit gone.

Can't say I loved this. Felt a bit disjointed with rustic, dark fruited palate.

Cork bristled into tiny particles. Still magnificent with osso bucco
