Is this even real life? The moment I poured this I didn't really know what to expect judging by the deep golden yellow in the glass. I thought "okay, this might be over the peak already". But you know what they say - assumptions are the mother of all fuckups. To start with the nose first - loads of oak (definitely needs decanting) with the ripe tropical fruit laying underneath. The palate is full-on creamy and broad, but with a superbly linear string of acid that carries the whole wine to another level. It makes it tastes like a 5-year-old Chardonnay, not one that's two decades old. Long finish with a note of banana that I found really appealing. Montrachet doesn't get better than this and rarely does any Chardonnay for that matter.

TNs: Female Burgundy Winemakers Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): A wonderful wine. This had such a nice nose to it, with wafts of white fruit, buttery cream and gentle florals, underlined with by a little streak of minerality. Lovely, and speaking so eloquently of Montrachet too. The palate was drinking beautifully at this point of its evolution, with rich apple flavours pierced with juicy lemons, a spine of stony minerality and nice hints of earthiness, and then just an edge of roasted almonds leading into a beautiful creamy finish. Full, powerful, and mouthfilling, yet so elegantly balanced and eminently drinkable. This was yummy and drinking absolutely on point.

Dinner at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): At peak. This is a stunning bottle of chardonnay, with unparalleled richness and power. It is what Montrachet ought to be -- raw power, muscular presence, and long finish. There's a mild bit of oak still on the nose, but it is evenly matched by some nutty notes of aged chardonnay and slight whiff of smoky reduction. The palate is absolutely mind-boggling in its sheer concentration though. Lots of secondary characteristics, including a nutty quality (not premox) that gives this an almost chewy texture. Expectations were high here, but they were exceeded.

2000 Joseph Drouhin Montrachet: Such a beautiful bottle of wine. Yellow fruits, slightly tropical, a bit of smoky/flint & mineral nose. On palate, crisp acidity, good weight/ structure, peach cream/ modest fatness with good balance. Excellent wine and still can age for another 10+ years. Some background about this plot: Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet is a 2.06 hectares property, the largest plot within Le Montrachet. The vineyard is all located on the Puligny side, just below the Chevalier Montrachet plot. The Drouhin family has exclusive control since 1947.

Fantastic drouhin montrachet. Nose bursts out with coconut, honey, and ripe yellow fruit. The palate is delicate, intense and elegant with the montrachet layer and intensity. Very complex. This is drinking so beautifully now. Superb montrachet. 95+

This wine needs time in the glass to evolve. It did not taste like a montrachet to me when it was first poured. But it evolved really nicely with time as the butter, honey, sugarcane and popcorn started to emerge. The wine has high acidity and minerals. It's still very young..a super elegant montrachet that was not made in a powerful style..typical Drouhin Montrachet according to my friends. Absolutely amazing!

Brittannia Group (Hix Mayfair): pale gold. Very pure classy nose, very correct, lacy effortless. Powerful, honey, butterand richness. Fine but lacked a little excitement. No decant and those with some left said it developed considerably over time in the glass.

Farewell Dinner (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago IL): From 1.5L. Ripe yellow orchard and citrus fruit with a good bit of floral. Some mineral on the nose as well. Good fruit and spice on the palate, but showing more age than I would like, especially in this format. Moderate intensity and finish.
There was also a 750ml bottle at tonights dinner which I am told showed much better.

Farewell to a Great Restaurant (Charlie Trotter's - Chicago IL): A bottle and magnum were both brought to dinner and since they tasted so different, I'm writing two tasting notes, this one for the wine from the (much better) 750 ml bottle. Enchanting floral start with lots of spice, ripe apple and lemon peel aromas. Great fruit on palate with lots of density. Well supported with balanced acidity and minerality, helping provide great textures.

From magnum and had along side the 2004, which had more zip, so the quiet elegance of this wine was somewhat lost. It is a beautiful wine but best enjoyed on its own without competition.

La Paulee Gala (San Francisco CA): From magnum. Fresh floral start with ripe stone fruit. Everything came across in perfect balance on the palate, with ripe peach and charming spice that is very nicely structured and textured. It's not the most dense, long or powerful 2000 Montrachet, but very elegant and enticing today. Thankfully there were no signs of oxidation, but I still wouldn't consider this a long-term cellar hold given its moderate density.

Versus the 1999 Marquis de Laguiche (Drouhin) Montrachet, the 2000 Marquis de Laguiche showed more lemon, limestone, white flowers, and more depth on the back palate. A very regal wine that I found more unctuous than the 1999. Great balance, quite young, and I scored it a point higher than the 1999 because the 2000 shows better balance, length, and youth. While I prefer the nose of the 1999, the length and depth of the 2000 is more impressive.

Creamy yellow fruit and floral on the nose with touches of spice and lightly toasted nuts. Rich and creamy on the palate as well; almost lemon-lime custard like. Medium acidity and body with a moderate finish. Very nice though personally I don't think I'd hold them any longer.

Powerful nose of roasted nuts, hints of grapefruit and quince, then come the quitessential brioche . In the mouth the wine is very open. richness of nuts and brioche is balanced by a nice minerality. AAlthough no hints of oxydation, you can feel from the light acidity that the win will not improve with time. Finale is long powerful and well balanced : a great wine, no question. (2 views)

Not sure what was going on here, but this was distinctly unpleasant for me to drink, with a very bitter mid-palate and finish. My friend Bill, who opened this and has much more experience with Montrachet than I, thought it improved with air, but I couldn't find any enjoyment in this. Not for me.

JF's Birthday (JF's place, Tucson): Classic oaky, malolactic nose. On the palate, oak, oak, and more oak, with some nice acids trying to offset the oak. There's a really nice wine somewhere in there, but there's just way too much oak for me. Maybe the oak will integrate with time, but I dunno.

Trip to Burgundy; 3/20/2006-3/24/2006 (Burgundy): More floral than anything else on nose. Orchard fruit with herbs and spices on palate, charming and delicate, probably not a Laguiche Montrachet to stock away in the back of the cellar for decades.
