as others have noted, plenty of sediment so run thru a screen and a good decant helped as well. plenty of black pepper. dark and red fruit. nice nose as well. seems like plenty of life left

Yum! Decanted for sediment then poured. Tasted fully mature. More earth forward than fruit forward with notes of pepper, meat, and blood. Dark fruits were present but tasted secondary to the earth flavors. Tannins were soft and integrated. Really good wine. There was half a glass left on day 2 which was thin and lost all its power. Would definitely drink up here.

Very nice; a positive surprise. Seems to be at its peak or approaching - nowhere near the end of its window, which should go out to at least 2023. Lots of fine sediment; ran it twice through a Rabbit decanting screen to clear it out. If you don't screen and decant it might taste rough. This is a treat. Mature fruits still going strong, tannins very present yet fine and in balance, as is acid. No apparent sweetness but there may be some to taste the fruit.

Fun wine; had with fillets and haricots verts. Garnet color with some age on the rim of the wine. Nose of dark blue and red fruit, mint and baking spices. Had some grittiness on the finish, which was medium in length. Agree with other reviews there was lots of sediment so recommend a good decant.

Dark red. Mint, blueberry and tobacco on nose. Viscous on palate, lots of sediment. Black pepper and wet leather on palate. So much sediment it is slightly chunky. Guess I should have decanted. Smooth otherwise. Medium length finish. Still has a few years left with tannins and powerful fruit.

Deep purple. On the nose aromas of med + intensity- black cherries, jasmine, black tea, black plums, sandalwood, baking spices, and salami. On the palate the wine is dry with medium plus acidity, medium plus fine tannins, silky and ripe, medium plus alcohol, full body. The finish is long with black fruit, cloves, vanilla. The wine demonstrates length, intensity on the nose and the palate, and complexity with primary black fruit and floral aromas, secondary - spice, vanilla and toast and some tertiary meaty aromas. However, there is a bit of heat in the mouth, finish resulting in a lack of balance. Would drink now, probably at its peak or within the next 1-3 yrs.

Dark purple in the glass. Floral aroma, a hint of candied fruit and a bit of alcohol burn. Taste is blueberry, cobbler, with a pleasant peppery note. Finish is smooth. This is a subtle wine at this point with great structure. Very nice by itself and held up to a range of food quite well.

Displays a lot of richness for its age. Robust notes of black plums, fig paste, beef blood, and espresso roast. Dense and extracted on the palate, with a persistent, if somewhat tiresome, finish. Good for what it is, but I didn't want to drink more than glass of it.

I was disappointed with this wine vs. my expectations and the hype. Some good fruit notes of blackberry, plum and smoke, but not as big or showy as I expected. Savory and with a certain restrained elegance. A good pairing with our buffalo strip steak, which brought out the flavors, but not a wow on its own.
Our experience diverges from the others here so we must not have a good bottle.

Almost black in color, yet the viscosity does not stain the sides of the glass as I would have expected. The nose shows off perfectly ripened plum and blueberry fruits, with bacon drippings and olive paste all poured over wet rocks. There is also essence of smoke and embers in the upper register. On the palate, full bodied and bold, the flavors present as tart plum skin, olive pit, barbeque, black pepper flakes, and espresso grounds. The finish is bold and upfront, with well-rounded and chewy tannins, and medium acidity, but slightly clipped in length of flavors on the finish. Drink now. Not a repurchase for me at $67 USD.

Tasted along side a 2005 Dehlinger Syrah East Face. The Dumol was noticeably hotter with alcohol more prominent. Some bright fruit of raspberries and bing cherries.
Decanted for an hour before service. Looking back on my previous tasting notes, it seems we've shifted from a fruit-driven profile to a more Rhone-like profile; lots of minerality and saline/blood notes. Still significant tannins on the finish.

Dark purple. Complex and interesting nose of dark fruit, licorice, beef blood and spice. Still young and tannic. Opened up over four hours, but still needs more air time. At first it was a little hollow in the middle but it did gain complexity with time. Layers of black fruits, and ripe currents show up on the finish which does last several minutes. My first bottle of 09. Should be an interesting voyage, five more to go. DuMol does a great job on all of their wines!

Big, deep ruby color, barely fading to med ruby at the rim. The nose shows off med(+) intensity, developing notes of black pepper, plum, black cherry, smoke, and espresso. The palate is full bodied, reveals a dry wine that has med (+) alcohol. The flavors are med(+) in intensity, showing black cherry, raspberry, cracked black pepper, smoky BBQ, and green pepper. The tannins are med(+) in intensity, and help support the wine for its long life ahead. I'm just concerned that this wine may turn into a little sweeter in its fruit profile as the tannins melt away. The finish is med(+) in length, and echoes flavors including espresso, tar, black cherry and licorice. This is a very good quality wine that is just now entering its drinking windo, and should improve further for 3-4 years, then continue to drink well for another 5-6 years.

Decanted two hours prior to service. In the glass, saturated, deep purple. On the nose, blueberries, blackberries, and a bit of blood. On the palate, a core of pure dark fruit, with secondary notes of beef blood and pepper, and a silky texture on the mid-palate, followed by assertive tannins on the finish. I think there is more to be had here with 1-2 more years in the cellar.

Deep purple, almost black, like India ink. Taste is strong and perhaps a little bitter, like a reduction sauce without butter. There is a faint creosote smokiness. But, at its heart, this has a very singular, strong flavor of syrah only. Most definitely should lay down for at least another year. Would recommend decanting at least 2 hours in advance.

Palate: fruit and fruit acid right up front, medium tannin, black fruit, slight chalky mineral texture mid-palate, grape-alcohol finish yet not too hot. Palate is a bit unbalanced/ angular due to it's youthful exuberance.
Body, fruit, and acidity indicate that it will improve over the next 5+ years although it may not be capable of long-term agiing.

Dinner at Maggianos. Best Dumol so far for me. This wine has such tremendous depth of black fruits along with very strong acidity. Nose had exotic smoked blackberries, oak, cassis. Palate was rich and mouth coating, black raspberries, pepper. This will improve substantially with time in the cellar.

Has the most potential of the DuMol RRV's syrah I've had ('05-'08). Meaty ripe nose of boysenberry, wild berries, pepper, and violets. Strikingly acidic palate, both lithe and balanced, but still retained deep concentrated ripe purple fruits and lovely pepper note that carries through the finish with mocha and spice. Oak is quite prominent, but balanced with the fruit. Much more acidic than prior years, should age very well. Chalky tannins are quite prominent.

after a three hour decant the nose is rich with meaty blackberry, light anise and spice. the palate though is super tight with tart plum and licorice. quite bitter with lots of heat on the finish. at this point i would call it nose 93, pal 86.
after four hours the palate is starting to really open up. the profile is much less austere and has added notes of black tea and tar. still just a touch of heat, but fading fast. the nose still 93, palate 92.
after five hours the wine is beautifull. palate has all previous notes and has now added a finish of mocha while the wine has come into perfect balance. probably the best structure of any dumol syrah i have had. it has plenty of black fruit, but it was not a fruit bomb. instead the fruit served for a base below the other flavor components. i think the structure and balance bode well for this wine so i am leaning up to an overall 94 pts. give it lots of time in the decanter. if i were to get a mulligan, i would give it at least 6 hours before drinking.
