Served vis-a-vis the Vieux Donjon, and not a crazy line up at alle given the cool character of VD, however, this looses out. In it self it is a very classic, vertical, cool, elegant wine, this is an Englishmans St. Emilæion and certainly not a fucking Merlot ... Will keep, but open for business #NC80#BarVin

In the bouquet dark berries, licorice and chocolate. On the palate green herbs, licorice, firm acidity, a lot of sticky tannin and a great length. The wine needs a few more years of ageing to show all of its finesse. 92 – 93+

Opening gave a top note of violet. Then after a while deep, rich, mature notes without being excessively oaky. Lovely fruity taste with plenty of berries but with good solid structure.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow";Bordeaux 2009 vs 2010 (By JS): Second time within a month I taste/drink this wine. The previous note was not a blind note. The one below is a blind note and the wine came from another source. In the bouquet dark chocolate, licorice, dark berries and a little celery. On the palate dark berries, meaty, licorice, laurel, savory and chocolate. Good acidity and firm tannin. A lot of power for many more years of ageing.

Concentrated bouquet with dark berries, licorice and just after uncorking hints of asphalt. On the palate loaded with dark berries, dark licorice and chocolate, firm but good acidity and tannin with still a firm bite. A wine to chew on, but also with complexity and finesse. Ok moment to try a bottle, but it can last at least another decade and maybe even two. 93+

tasted during bordeaux tasting 2009/2010, was relatively weak in the line up compared to other 2010 (Smith Haut lafite) reasonable against Calon segur.
The wine was very well appreciated with food pairing (wild duck). fruit came out (black fruits) and little licorice, medium bodied with good length. very good price/quality ration

Consistent with notes 2.5 years ago. Floral nose while deep, dark, and rich on the palate. This paired nicely with seared NY Strips off the grill. Best years still ahead. Drink 2022-2030+. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 92.

We decanted this wine. Definitely an Old World wine – slight barnyard on the nose. We detected flavors of licorice and dark bitterness. Still young to be drinking this wine – cellar for another 4-5 years. We purchased this wine from MacArthur Beverages probably as a wine future.

Opened and decanted about an hour ahead of grilled burgers. Cinnamon toast, chocolate espresso, red raspberries, and cherry oak on the nose. The palate was full, round, rich, and opulent, bringing dark blackberries, blackcurrant, creme de cassis, chocolate, coffee, tobacco leaf, and mint into a refined yet thick, tannic finish. Extracted, new-world style, but it's concentration and balance was exceptional. Drink 2020+ Tecnical score: 93. Enjoyment score: 92.

I found this to be rather enjoyable and a great pairing to a duck cassoulet dish. Very descriptive nose of black licorice, blackberry, and menthol. Medium body on the palate with well delineated black fruit and some interesting savory notes. Not much on the finish, but the wine held up well. Would repurchase some in the low $40 range.

A big bold and masculine wine with high alcohol heat and huge wall of mouth drying tannins. However the intensive aromas of leather, dark cherries, chocolate ,roasted coffee and the dark juicy plums infused with cherry liquor on the palate kind of distract me from it and make the wine so enjoyable right now. Although this is gonna be so much better when the tannins soften, this is one wine I don’t mind to keep drinking in its youthful tannic state.

Deep crimson with slightly red tint, opaque, compact rim.
Classic Right Bank bouquet of black truffle, dark cherry, dark plum, licorice, medium extracted coffee.
Soft but full of character - as classic as it gets. Silky mouthfeel, always full of dimensions. Blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, cocoa, with a trace of jammy fruit but not overly so.
Drank at Logis de la Cadene in St Emilion. Superb wine with plenty left in the tank. 91++

PWS; Chasse Spleen plus a few extra's (@ My place): Pnp. In the bouquet dark forest fruits and vanilla, but in fact the bouquet is still quite locked. On the palate dark forest fruits, a lot of vanilla, chocolate and marzipan. Sweet spices. Full bodied. Modern made and a very beautiful wine. Will probably open up a bit around 2020 and still be lovely around 2028+, but there will be a follow-up before that time.

Opened to breathe, slow ox, for 6h. Soft distinctive nose of red fruit, methol, baking spice, and oak. The palate is still very primary with luscious red fruit, cherries mostly, plums, woodsy mushroomy flavors, and chewy tannins. Lingering finish, with hints of graphite. A good example of a young, well made St. Emilion. Tasty tonight with grilled sausages. If you have a bunch of these I recommend holding out for at least another 3-5 years before cracking them open in earnest. If you want to try it now, go for it but plan ahead: I suggest some serious aeration or decanting to soften the tannins before tasting. Smooth and delicious on Day 2.

A nearly opaque wine with lush dark fruits on the palette and a noticeable, chewy dense feel. Tannins were just right. Dare I say new world style? It reminds me of a Napa cab.
Update on night two: seems to have fallen apart overnight. The lush fruit is a bit more on the sour side now (not sure if this is acid or bitter tannins) and the alcohol feels overbearing. But for the sake of science, I'll have another glass. I won't lower my rating- this was really delicious the first night. My recommendation is to decant for 30 minutes to an hour, serve slightly chilled, and enjoy the whole bottle fresh.

Decanted for an hour; appearance of dark purple-ruby. Has a nose of blackberry paste and syrup, smokey violets, and some cassis. Dark currants and spicy blackberries on the palate with a tad of black coffee; oak is evident with the tannins lurking in the front palate. Medium+ bodied with a medium finish.

PnP from 375ml. This is a modern styled St Emilion which thankfully has some of the balance which this vintage is renowned for. A bit simple and lacking a sense of place but the juicy dark fruit and ripe tannins make this wine very approachable and immediately gratifying. This will benefit from a few more years of cellaring.
