I was on the borderline of marking this flawed, but I am not sure that it is flawed vs late in its optimal life. I was really excited to try this one but the fruit was very pruney and the development that I normallly expect with a Bandol rouge just wasn’t there. It wasn’t horrible and we were able to somewhat enjoy the bottle, but it didn’t live up to the expectation.

The organically farmed grapes are sourced from scattered plots located at the highest parts of Tempier's vineyards at an 11-hectare site sitting at 300m above sea level, making it the lightest of the three Tempier single-vineyard cuvées. This cuvée is typically 55% Mourvèdre with the remainder rounded out with Cinsaut (25%), Grenache (15%) and Syrah (5%). Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, macerated for 3-4 weeks, aged for approx. 18 months in large oak foudres. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 14,5% alcohol. Tasted in a Tempier 2003-1990 tasting in a horizontal flight of all three single-vineyard wines from 2003.
Deep, moderately translucent and quite evolved ruby red color with an obvious mahogany hue and a yellow rim. Savory, oxidative nose with aromas of chopped nuts, some soy sauce, a little bit of raisiny fruit, light notes of hay and a sharp hint of rancio. Feels like it is past its peak. The wine is full-bodied, silky and textural on the palate with oxidative flavors of nutty rancio, some hoi sin, a little bit of beef jerky, light licorice tones and hints of dried dark fruits. The wine feels quite impressively structured with its high acidity and still moderately grippy tannins - but it might be just because the fruit has faded away so much. The finish is dry, quite tannic and very savory with medium-long oxidative flavors of soy sauce, some leather, a little bit of beef jerk, light sweet notes of raisins and a hint of bitter dark chocolate.
I wonder if this was only an off bottle or if the lighter and more delicate La Migoua cuvée just isn't built to last as long as the heftier Cabassaou and La Tourtine? In multiple flights both Cabassaou and La Tourtine were drinking beautifully, whereas La Migoua was already going downhill with quite obvious oxidative characteristics. While both 2003 and 2001 La Migoua were already downhill, the 2001 wasn't as badly hit as this 2003, which I'd prefer to mark just "oxidized" rather than giving it a proper score. If you have an opportunity to choose from 2003 Tempiers, go for La Tourtine or Cabassaou, not this.

Consumed over two nights... better on second night... red and dark fruits, garrigue, savoury, long cherry finish, well balanced. There's a total disconnect between what I am tasting and the many negative notes others have posted regarding the 03 heat, lack of balance and other complaints. It's delicious!

Lighter cherry in color than I would have thought, still has good mix of black and red cherry fruit with garrigue and earthiness in the mid=palate. Finished well and held up for a 2nd night with just about the same showing.

Opaque purple color with ruby hints. Nose of plum pits and fecund earth intermixed with higher pitched scents of lavender and floral notes. Dense layers of blackberrry, currant, and black olive over a foundation of stone and earth on the palate. Moderate acidity and somewhat relaxed tannin but structure was firm enough. Nicely harmonious finish of hearty blueberry and plum fruit mixed with bits of rock. Overt wine showing well at age 15.

1st of 6 magnums (and 12 bottles), decanted 70 minutes, perfect cork and level - deep, dark plum red, little development; attractive peppered plum and spice, some tobacco and earth; full, long and persistent, plum fruit, nice complexity, not too hot, barely ready. Certainly fine (17.5).

A private lunch (Restaurant De Lindenhof **, Giethoorn, Netherlands): Warm style obviously but remarkably fresh and mineral for the 2003 vintage, vinous and spicy, ripe fruit but not pruney at all, tannins are dusty but ripe, transparent rather than big and concentrated, broad shoulders, satiny texture, black tea and black fruit finish, good length.

Served in a decanter, immediately after opening from wine fridge at 13C. Lovely high perfumed nose and mid-weight palate to this wine. Surprised me this time in, not really thinking about what to expect, I had stereotypical expectations of a tannic heaviness, probably with some sort of marker of the vintage heat, but I found it to be in a drinkable more-ish zone. Not "delicate" but very very far from bruising. Given the other notes here I expect the cooler serving temperature helped a lot.

I am a big fan of Tempier. This wine shows the heat of the vintage. Not that it's a bad wine, but it is very ripe, somewhat pruny and not typical of what I am used to in this wine. Dark in color. Not a lot of brett. Big, rich, somewhat fat palate. Sweet finish that lingers a bit.

Don't get me wrong: this is one of my all-time favorite wines. But the fiery canicule that hit Southern France during the summer of this vintage really affected this bottling. As usual, I loved the deep black fruit flavors and earthy, tarry, brambly notes that set Tempier's Migoua apart. There were some burnt s'more flavors going on in the background that I liked. But unlike other vintages, this one has lost its structure already. On the palate it's not flabby, more like gooey. Big, yes. Deep, yes. But I'm going to drink the rest of my bottles asap.

Decanted 1 hour. Heavy prune nose, grape and black cherry hard candy, molasses/caramel, a bit too alcoholic, wet gravel, and asphalt. Mid-weight palate with purple fruit, tangy acidity, greenish tannins, and a bland finish that is devoid of fruit flavor. Seems to be at peak maturity.

Tasted with 98, 99 and 05 Migoua's... easily the worst of the 4... The wine was deeply colored, had an extracted rim that is red. Aromatically the wine is pruney and has a bit of brett. On the palate the wine lacks focus and has moderate acidity, a chubby midpalate, very ripe tannins, and low to moderate alcohol. Balanced wine with ok length, good intensity, low complexity. Seriously lacks finesse has a fat texture, and would, as described below, be very difficult to place in Bandol. Weak wine for this producer... really lacks sharp flavors and pop... It has the depth of flavor and acids/tannins to age though I think it will always be overripe and lacking.

Out of magnum. Nose is open and complex. Still a youthful purple color. Nice balance, with plenty of dark fruit and minerals. Starting to develop nuances. Tannins have smoothed out. deep in color. Rich and dense. Dirt and mushrooms. Roasted peppered meat, black olives. Still very tannic and deep, meaty and very concentrated, but with some bitter tannins on the back end, maybe a little unripe pips. Very savory and feral, and very interesting. I really enjoy Tempier, but I am not sure if the tannins will outlive the fruit. Still quite enjoyable. I'm a little perplexed but optimistic at the same time.

BBQ at DanS. Opened along side with 2006 Tempier Classique. Given the heat wave in 2003 in europe, I expected the 2003 to be richer, but the two showed remarkable similarly in aromatics and mid-palate, but slightly different finish. Both were opened and decanted about 45min before serving. The wine at first showed aromatics of a bit too much alcohol for my liking, but that burned off somewhat. The aromatics was correct for Tempier and classic southern France, which I love. The mid-palate showed stronger notes of currant and boysenberry at first, and then mineral, and licorice notes later. it's a dense wine. The 2003 is full-bodied with definite tannin that might still take time to break down. 2003 also had a long smoother finish than the 2006. Over the course of the dinner, the wine became more well integrated and better. Should age another 3 year before peak. Nice wine.

Cork. Decanted for 1 hr (1/3 held back in bottle to taste tomorrow). Medium-light body, clear bright wine with no evidence of any ageing. Nose showed cherry fruit and a little heat (the vintage?). Black cherry palate, with just an edge or sourness to provide balance, a hint of bramble and good grip on the finish (longish). Excellent wine with plenty of life ahead of it - perhaps the slight heat will fade in time which will push it up a notch?

This wine was decanted and poured. It showed as expected; however, wine is showing some obvious alcohol notes on the bouquet and palate that distracts from its overall quality. Otherwise, this showed a very similar profile to a bottle tasted in October of 2008. This is an outstanding wine and hopefully some additional bottle age will better integrate the alcohol notes. It it does this wine could really evolve into a wonderful complex and nuanced mature Tempier.

This wine was opened and poured. It was not decanted. Initially this wine showed well but in primary style. After about 45 minutes the wine developed more complexity, depth and balance. The wine retains its youthful vibrancy but has begun giving hints of maturity. The bouquet shows a wonderful aromatic mix of black cherry, cassis, cloves, grilled meats, leather and stone. The color is a dark purple that is correct for its age. The palate is medium to full bodied and showed very good balance between the fruit, acidity and tannins. It has a long, balanced finish that is given structure from the tannins.

Surprisingly forward and clean for Tempier. Deep, rich cassis and black cherry, black olive, and mint notes. An ample but somewhat obscured firm tannic profile and not lacking in uplifting acids. Little varietal identity or Tempier character at this point, but very good.

Nice wine.

BBQ John Vanessa Ed Mimi -- Wow, huge and dense, needed time to open up. Loads of deep, deep fruit like black currant, plum and cassis. A real heady olivey earthiness too. Nice!

Cork. Decanted for 45 minutes. Drank with roast shoulder of lamb with olives. No bottle variation to the bottle tasted on 15th May 2009. Tasty wine, but holding a little heat on the finish. Will leave these now for a year or two.

(at Brasserie – NYC) Garnet / purple. Young, disjointed, but showing a lot of promise. Lovely blackberry and leather. A good tannic spine – needs time, but I could not resist for $60 on the wine list. (15+)

Surprisingly forward and clean for Tempier. Deep, rich cassis and black cherry, black olive, and mint notes. An ample but somewhat obscured firm tannic profile and not lacking in uplifting acids. Little varietal identity or Tempier character at this point, but very good.
