Mysterious dark plum colour. Strong bouquet of fruit, wine breadth. Allow at least an hour or more to breathe. Dark plum fruit well balanced spice, blackberries. An explosion of big fruit fills every sip. A full body and bold Shiraz. Long finish.

Still so much youthful energy and bright cherry and blackcurrant aromas, but plenty of tertiary notes as well. Graphite, leather, smoke, licorice, a little meat. A hint of eucalyptus. Dark velvet. Really enjoyed this!

2023 Birthday lunch (Aquitaine Brasserie): Tasted alongside 1998 and 2018. No notes on this one, probbaly the least impressive. Still in very good condition and quite primary but I think 98 and 18 just both superior vintages.

91% Shiraz, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills. Matured in old, 1460 liter vats that allow the wine to develop. Decanted off the minimal sediment. Deep and saturated ruby in the glass. Aromas open to show notes of fruit liqueur, blueberry, dark cherry, floral pastilles, baking spice, vanilla and mocha tones. The wine is remarkably youthful on the palate and still showing firm tannins and juicy acids. Polished and powerful with velvety and velour textures. Flavors compliment the nose with notes that recall dark cherry, muddled blackberry, blueberry compote, mocha, spice, floral pastilles and leather. The finish lingers effortlessly with grip.

Opened on a whim. Had cooked a steak pie with cauliflower cheese (Parmesan and Welsh vintage Cheddar cheese and a touch of double cream and ground black pepper), traditional veg (carrots, broccoli and cabbage) but special attention to the mash...............loads of butter, double cream and Dijon Mustard. All put through a potato ricer as no lumps in my mash people!
The wine.............fabulous. 12 years old and just hitting the real drinking window in my opinion.
All the complexity and development I want. Saved half the decanter for the following evening with a mid strength Chilli and was even better.
My wife is not particularly interested in my wine hobby but even she was impressed and asked for unprecedented seconds!
The really good news......I have 6 more bottles to have a journey with.

I noted with the last bottle that it was too young. Honestly I feel the same again with this one. But perhaps I can see that the 2 and half years since the last bottle have shown some evolution. I'd just prefer the fruit to mellow a touch more. This could be really, really good in a couple more years. Or perhaps not.

had to open a 2008 and a 2016 to see what will happen to my lovely 2016´s with some cellaring. Well the 2008 is still very heavy and full of black fruit, licorice, mint and also has a matured part of forrest floor, a hint of cedar and and some orange peel. Like the wine a lot but I think the 2016 will be even better in 8 years.

Clear, dark deep ruby. Nose is clean and medium (+). Violets, Blackcurrant, dark fruits, chocolate, spices, tobacco. Dry, medium (+) acid, medium (+) tannins, body is full. Flavor is medium (+) with dark fruits, chocolate, plums, dried fruits.Finish is medium (+). Despite the age, still feels like it's blowing off quite a bit of alcohol and the warmth overwhelms the nose/palate at times. Can see it would be better with food like peking duck. Though it retains the typical St Henri characters it's definitely not the best vintage for Henri IMHO.

Oh yes, a big barossa alright. Spicy licorice and cigars, holds on for a long time in the mouth. Really enjoyed it with duck tonight (pinot noir, pfwwww!). Only the one bottle sadly. I'm sure it will mellow further over the next 5 to 10 years. No rush to drink this if you have in stock.

Pleasant but somewhat underwhelmingly simple. Perhaps didn't show up well after a few days of aged Brunello tasting. Simplistically fruity with soft silky tannins. I'm normally a big St H fans but while a nice pleasant wine there was nothing special or defining about it.

Our second St. Henri (1997 was our first). We were not disappointed. Purple-red on the eye. Inviting, if not perhaps a touch more red than expected at 8 years. Perfume of chocolate, coffee, spices and fairly ripe red berries. Very pleasant. Palate of red berries, touch of spice, fairly subtle tannins and a lush finish. Shockingly a ton of sediment that left us wondering if we sipped too early. Definitely has another decade or so of vibrancy. An excellent wine

Terroir-istes International - Australia-Penfolds Mini Verticals (Klein Constantia): (Tasted Blind): Deep black-purple wine with complex and layered aromas displaying creamy melted chocolate (reminiscent of Galaxy), ripe blackberry, mulberry, damson, and black plum. Robust and full-bodied on the palate, the texture is creamy and silky. There are some well-extracted notes, but not overworked; a lively, fresh acidity and chamois-like yet dense tannins give layers to its appeal. Lots of complexity, generous fruit and integrated alcohol. It is long, precise, yet powerful with a fantastic depth of fruit with an iron backbone (almost an iron fist in a velvet glove). Closes with black cherry, blackcurrant compote and chocolate. Fantastic! 90 Shiraz & 10 CS

MS-style Blinds (6 in 25 minutes) at Californios (Californios SF): 91% Shiraz 9% Cabernet from Coonawarra Elevage: 13 months in large 50+ year old vats. I’ve heard that actually these are 2nd-3rd use barrels. The info comes 2nd hand from the Penfolds winemaker - Peter Gago. I definitely got signs of oak on the palate. "It is matured in old, 1460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character.” - I don’t know if I believe this.
Brief notes: This was really, really good - a new world wine balanced in an old world way. Not complex but really nicely balanced. Maybe could use some time in the bottle to integrate the oak more. Score: Around 9.
----------- Full Notes:
Visual
- opaque - dark ruby, hint of red at the rim - no gas or sediment - moderate tears
Nose
- clean - moderate to moderate minus intensity - a little bit tight - youthful - fruit-driven - fruit - primarily dark fruits. cassis, blackcurrant liqueur - earth - not much, a little fresh turned earth - no notable minerality [should have said earth, not minerality] - no herbaceousness - no oak on the nose - [forgot to mention florals] - complexity is moderate minus
Palate
- shows signs of oak on the palate. not 100% new - maybe 20-40% new barrels, still un-integrated - dry - medium plus body - elevated alcohol, 14% (close - 14.5%) - elevated acid - elevated tannins [forgot to mention texture] - confirm the blackcurrant, cassis - slight turned-earth - balance in a ripe way, but there's plenty of acidity to go around - complexity is moderate - finish is moderate plus
Initial Conclusions
- based on the structure and aromatics, with very balanced alcohol, I believe this is an Old World wine, from a moderate climate - blackcurrant and elevated tannins and oak make me think Bordeaux. - I don’t get pyrazine character of cabernet/cab franc - [forgot to mention the clean-ness - no brettanomyces] - This could be merlot-based - could be Napa cabernet from a relatively cool climate - could be South American cabernet - could be a lot of things.
Final Conclusion
- Merlot blend with cabernet franc, Bordeaux, St. Emilion, 2013
This is an excellent wine. Do need to decant. I did that for 30mins and it opens up with well integrated tannins. Still intense and close for another 30mins but it will gradually open up. Opaque, dark red and full body with such a refine finish. Relish for more. thank goodness a have a couple more.

Dark ruby. Expressive nose of torrefaction, tar, dried and dark fruit, with good Barossa typicity. On the palate fruit and mouth filling without being flabby. This is a well done Shiraz with decent aromatic complexity and length, not overly sweet.

Post CNY wine tasting dinner (Singapore): Second flight. While not really my kind of wine, I thought the St. Henri was showing better than the Renaissance. Obviously very rich with the expected sweet, dark fruit it had a long and intense finish. Could have done with a bit more accuracy and delineation but very nice nevertheless. The Renaissance had a wonderful nose with pepper and grilled meat but found it less impressive on the palate, tightly wound, fairly tannic and did not find the finish particularly long. St. Henri 92. Renaissance 91+

Opaque deep purple, almost black in color. Aromas explode with loads of dark fruit and vanilla. Some hints of earth and spice, but mainly the fruit dominates. The palate is super concentrated and intense with loads of mouth coating tannin. This is an absolute monter wine. A nice Shiraz but this was a bit disappointing. Similar to the '04 I commented on a few weeks ago, this was a bit raisiny and showed some VA. Borderline ripeness/over-ripe... it was enjoyable but I wonder how long this will age, which is ironic given this wine's purported ability to last decades. Anyway, I wondered if it was an off bottle, but the similarities in style to the '04 leads me to think this is just a style and really not my thing, given the price point.

Almost painfully young, don't think about opening before 2020. Less ripe than expected, maybe picked earlier than usual... a sleeper for the cellar with lots of upside. Black, but not jammy and without the concentration of an Elderton Command. Still alcohol on finish, but I expect this to integrate. This should become a finesse and feminine shiraz to die for in 10yrs, when may score about 95pts.
