  • After opening a corked 2000 Lafon Rocket, this was my back up for Memorial Day with ribs (which my partner burnt). Just slight bricking on my bottle compared to what others wrote. Nose of leather and dried cherries. Which follows on the palate with more dried fruit (I got cranberries?!?). Slightly acetic but not that far gone at all. Obviously a bit over the hill slightly but still drinking OK.

  • Still good, but definitely time to drink up. Don't want to wait to long on this one.

  • The color is getting pretty brown. Dried cherries and roses on the nose. Intriguing aromatics. The palate is lovely although it seems fragile. The fruit is starting to dry out and the tannins are still very present. Nice leathery elements. Balsamic notes that increased with air. For some reason this is the first time I have opened a bottle of this and will drink my last bottle soon.

  • Still drinking well but Clearly fading. Not as good as I recall. Would recommend to drink now.

  • Slight brownish hue around edges. Wonderful complex nose of earth, mushroom and dark cherry. Smooth with reduced tannins. Did not decant this time, just opened bottle for about an hour before serving and the wine showed better.

  • Bricking. Tar nose. In pretty good state tight now.

  • The wine is cloudy as it is unfiltered. The initial bouquet is a bit barnyard with rose underneath. However, this will blow off to reveal at an earthy nose after some decanting. Don't let the clarity fool you. The wine is superb with dark cherry fruits, mushrooms, truffle, leather. It is a complex wine and the tannins are smooth. The 2001's are drinking very nice right now we drank an 01 Cavalier Bartolomeo Barolo the night before and had some remaining. The bouquet on the Cavalier Bartolomeo is quite appealing, and was a bit better. Kim liked the Vietti better. Still both rank below the 01 Pio Cesare from the previous week. It will be hard not to consumer more 01's as they are so appealing right now.

  • Lighter in color and body for a Barolo. Roses and tar on the nose with sour cherry palate. Moderate length finish. Nothing exceptional yet, but still has some life.

  • Double decanted an hour prior to dinner. Deep, dark ruby, very youthful appearance. Seemed rather closed, not giving much up. Have another bottle left that I will hold for a few years. Dark prior to an 01 Pio Cesare Barolo that smoked it. With chicken Marabella on Christmas day.

  • Drinking very well right now.

  • In a terrific spot right now. Smells of lipstick, sweet cedar, tar, cranberry and earth. It is generous in the mouth with a nice balance of sweet and savoury flavours. The wine’s tannins are loosing their grip and the overall package is harmonious with good drive and detail.

  • Open two hours before. The cap is soaked up by little more than half. It was opened two hours before, but not decanted. The choice was not right. In the glass does not develop virtually aromas and in the mouth the tannins are too harsh. In the glass after about an hour the smell does not improve, while the apore assumes, albeit in a subtle, a note of typicality.

  • Man, I should have waited but grabbed this out of the cellar on impulse. Still tannic and gritty with some nice sour cherry and floral component just waiting to immerse. I'd wait another few years on this one and then even decant to show some true Barolo characteristics.

  • Needs more time. Starting to blossom, and looking good, but still has quite some ways to go. Lots of tannin and acid here, lovely savory undercurrent, pretty woody. A few concerns about the amount of fruit this has - don't want it to become all wood, but looking good so far.

  • Drank alongside the 2007. This has been decanting for 2 hours. The aromas are beautiful, and showing some secondary development of fruit. There's nice tar and gravel, red pepper spice, a dustiness, and some black raspberry fruit. The fruit is definitely a bit dusty, and it does feel about its age. Palate attacks with some high powered red fruit that's quite pretty, some mushroom earthiness, funk, and mild tannins. Nice acid on the finish with slight alcohol, but overall it's just pretty floral notes, red fruit, and lots of dusty gravel. This is actually drinking pretty darn good considering it's relatively young age. I had a bottle 5 years ago that I was quite disappointed with, but this is in a great place. I'd say drink now and over the next 10-15 years, and I do think it will still improve from here. Window is definitely open, though.

  • My last bottle of this some 12 months ago was in a lot better nick showing as a vibrant, ethereal middle aged Barolo, this one showed some coffee and marzipan oxidative notes. It was kinda like trying to have a shag with your jocks still on, you know there’s a higher level of excitement but the whole experience is somewhat muffled. There were some sweet cedar and balsamic things going on along with tar and leather. Without some level of closure failure I suspect this wine would still be absolutely ‘rockin’.

  • After the epic fail of the 2003 Remizieres Crozes, I decided to open this up. It isn't exactly a mind blowing wine. Certainly good and pleasant. Has typicity. Shows nice red fruit, roses, earth and spice. Very mellow and nice silky texture. Medium finish rounds this one out. Good value at the sub-$30 price tag I acquired it at many years ago, but I don't think it's worth any more than that now. Drinking at peak right now and I don't think it'll get materially better. The earliest maturing wine in the Vietti Barolo portfolio by a long-shot.

  • Roses and Tar with chorus of floral components. Took some time to open, but then it was quite pretty on the nose. Complexity with chewier texture. Good length. Drank with friends without food. Would be lovely with roast pork in crushed tomato confit with a touch of red pepper flakes and cream and thyme, nutmeg, roasted mashed garlic with gigante beans.

  • This wine is finally ready. I had the 2001 Castiglione two years ago when it was going through a quiet phase and it left me cold. I'll say that when I poured this into the decanter I was surprised by the color of the wine. While I expected a dark magenta with a little bricking at the edge, this has turned a rusty red. On the nose the Castiglione is displaying a bouquet that betrays an inclination to identify individual characteristics but instead arrests you with the aromas of a mature Barolo. The great thing about a beautiful old wine is it's like a grandparent telling you a story and instead of talking or even thinking, one has the opportunity to just be quiet and listen. Anyway, on the palate the wine is medium bodied and fairly high in acid. I think this would go very well with pasta Bolognese or a hearty sausage. If I had a third bottle I would put it into play within the next year as it just doesn't have the body to go much longer.

  • Drinkable now. Enjoyed with truffle meal, very good. Color appears aged, and drinks aged, but not too much. Pretty approachable as Barolos go.

  • I'm glad I checked in on this. Surprisingly mature and drinking very well now, but in no danger of imminent decline. Pure, complex nebbiolo, with a strong rose/floral element. Excellent food wine, and a great value.

  • Opened and left alone for four hours, then decanted and poured about thirty minutes later. This was tasted side-by-side with the 1999 Vietti Barolo, Castiglione. Both wines showed well with the '99 showing more completeness (perhaps the result of two more years of bottle age). This wine shows more youthfulness in the aromatics and a very similar color that is just slightly more youthful in appearance. On the palate the wine shows more tannin structure and slight disjointedness at times. This is at or nearing its peak. Perhaps a another year or two of bottle age will smooth the minor rough edges.

  • Barolo, on the last Thursday of April (Willamette Wine Storage - Portland, OR): The nose reminds me of a big steak drenched in rich, dark cherries along with a hint of oranges. This wine is really clean on the palate. Wonderful tangy cherries make up the bulk of the fruit and the tannins are balanced and well integrated. The cherry flavors are juicy and decadent on the mid palate, and are complemented by some nice mineral notes. While full and strong on the finish, the tannins never become harsh or distracting. Very enjoyable!

  • I may amend this tomorrow, but upon opening I was a bit disappointed in this Barolo. It seemed a bit thin and watery. Not much on the nose. Later some cherry and strawberries checked in, but I'm going to let it wait until tomorrow and see what happens.

  • Tasted blind at a Barolo 2001 tasting at "La Padella" (Nijmegen, The Netherlands). It turned out to be drunk alongside the Rocche (also Vietti). This wine had a much lighter color, a little more fruit in the nose, opened up easier. But the taste was less broad and intense than the Rocche. It was from magnum (the caraf only filled with 0,75 liter), at the end of the evening we drunk it again (this was in the first flight of the evening) and it was much better then.

  • Rich leather and tar, otherwise no real notes taken. Nice bottle of wine, though some other bottles come in better for the price.

  • After it warmed up to room temperature the nose started to show up some cherries. In two hours the nose blossomed into cherries (almost cherry liquor) , tar, flowers, leather, smoke and orange peel. Very nice almost transparent color (dirty red) with rim showing some pigment loss. The body was much fuller and tastier after 2 hr decant (it was a bit weak initially) , with cherries and tar supported by nice acidity and medium tannins. This is a very good wine. The next day it softenned but it had juicier finish.

  • Popped and poured at a restaurant. This is pretty tight right now, but what it's showing --pure cherry, strawberry, leather and tar-- is really in nice balance. While its enormously enjoyable and approachable now, one gets the feeling that, in a year or two, this is going to open up beautifully. Some tannin, but well balanced with the fruit. Smooth, long finish. 91+.

  • Itailan Pasta Night. One of my favorite wines of the night. Nose of cherry and slate. Palate: super smooth and elegant.

  • @ Red Prime in OKC..pretty hard to tell the color in the restaurant, but the nose came out of the glass full of dusty cherries. Aromas of dark fruit and spice, very earthy, but just didn't feel like it was ready. Tannins everywhere, but not harsh enough to scare the fruit. I wish it had been decanted, because it developed nicely in the glass over the course of dinner. I'd like to try it again in a year or three.

  • Decanted 30 min before tasting. At first taste, hit by some tannins, but they mellowed out over the next 30. Evolved well as evening progressed. Nice wine, good fruit, good acid. WIll wait 1-2 years before opening next bottle

  • Fruit is a bit soft emphasizing leather, soy, and creosote. Dark cherry underlying the whole thing. Very pleasant to drink.

  • Nose of strawberry, flower pot and cherries. On the palate it was very tight giving a blast of flavors (leather, cherries, raspberries, plum) for 5 seconds combined with tannins shooting off in every direction. The medium weight faded quickly leaving a light red fruit and flower finish. Plan on waiting 5 years before the next bottle is popped.

  • Did not decant. A touch of fruit, perhaps strawberry. Not much oak. Pleasant wine. A little thin. Will decant the next bottle before consumption.

  • Open, expressive, terrific. Black & red cherries, sweet-tart, leather & spice. Silky and surprisingly soft tannin, great acidity. Probably not a long-termer but it's rare to find Barolo with fruit this expressive....especially for a mere $35.

  • SFwine double-blind tasting at Dave's (San Francisco): Light, faded ruby color. Initially some nail polish, crunchy cherry, sweet-tarts on the nose. Sweet cherry and strawberry on the palate, light bodied, with good purity of fruit and plenty of acidity. This was actually my favorite wine of the flight, and my first thought was an older cru Beaujolais. But then someone pointed out the oak -- indeed, some creamy oak is evident on the finish. Felt like an idiot when the bags came off as nebbiolo is one of my favorites, although the lack of intrusive tannin surprises me. In fact this wine is nearly wide open at the moment, if you don't mind the oak. (Tasted blind)

  • ( at Bottega del Vino – NYC) True red/ruby to pink at rim. Very nice nose – like walking in a rose garden with a couple of violets and a rubber tire or two on a hot day. The rubber is very supple with the fruity/floral aspects at the fore. Not surprisingly, this opened tight on the palate with light to medium weight flavors and a good tannic finish. Over two hours, the palate gained depth, but the tannic spine remained. I think this will be a very good Barolo with time and was a very good bargain on this outrageously priced wine list. (90+)

  • Ordered at a restaurant. Lovely nose of rose petals, potpourri and spice. Subtle cherry flavors, medium-bodied, even soft. The second bottle had more body and a lot more tannins. Very good with the meal and a good value among barolos.

  • Plummy garnet color and smells of roses, tar, red berries, and spicy cinnamon and nutmeg. Lush mouthfeel with a good dose of fruit and acidity. Not as much tannic structure as I would have expected, and it's drinking amazingly well. Long finish and in my opinion a super QPR and very nice wine.

  • Decanted and afer an hour or so it opened up real nice with great spice, a nice mineral pull, plum, bit of pepper, dark subdued fruit. Awesome stuff!

  • Opened wine and after two hours still closed. The fruit was hidden but there was a nice spice in the midpalate. Finally after about 4 hours of being open the wine was starting to opening up and I finally got the meat of the wine. Part of my issue might have been that I broke my decanter a little while ago and this really needed time to air and bottle air didn't do it. When it finally opened I got plum and hint of toast with the same spice I got earlier. Wow this is nice but NEEDS time. I think this will only get better with age.
