Leon's Burgundy @ Medlar (The Medlar, London): Deep ruby. Very dense. Polished and glossy. Modern. Full and rich. A touch of TCP on the nose. Not my thing but clearly making a statement. *** to **** depending.

Paul's Bday at Custom House: Pretty wine, nice red driven nose, elegant and all about red cherry. Soft flavors, smooth. with good bite and spicy. A nice burgundy, just a touch simple, but in a good place.

Popped and poured. Darker ruby. Nose of cherry pits, raspberry, earth, anise, iodine. Strikingly fresh on the palate with black cherry, raspberry, licorice, and leather notes. Has a touch of muscular austerity lending a bit of gravitas. Terrific balance conferred by bracing acidity, moderately structured tannins, and vivacious fruit. Oak barely noticeable. Long finish with echoes of raspberry and satisfying grip. Another red burg from the 2000 vintage drinking very well.

Served a bit less chilled than previous bottle. Dark garnet color. Nose of violets, black raspberry, licorice, tea spices, anise. Medium-bodied mineral-laden palate of dark plum and raspberry flavors, accompanied by leathery and earthy notes. Muscular tannins balanced by elegant fruit and moderate acidity. Long, structured finish. Excellent with grilled steak.

Popped and poured, served quite chilled. Very dark ruby color. Nose was slow to emerge, finally offering dense blackberry, spiced tea, and leather scents. Concentrated black raspberry and blueberry flavors building persistently on the palate with broad, filed-off tannins and brisk acidity playing off each other nicely. Wonderful grapey, tangy grip on the minerally finish which made for many repeated sips. Masculine wine with energy and presence lacking merely a more forthcoming nose to be truly outstanding.

Birthday Celebration (Custom House Tavern - Chicago IL): Ripe red cherry aromas and flavors with good spice as well. Very accessible and charming, even if slightly simple. Very typically 2000, drinking very well now.
