  • (14% Alkohol) Sehr intakte, relativ dunkle Farbe. Grosses Nebbiolo-Kino. 96 vvPunkte

  • This had ~8 hours of air and showed a distinct, over toasty oak note from the initial pour until service. The oak was more resolved on the palate, which was dense and polished, but it was unmistakable throughout. From a more oak-agressive era at the domaine and it's not working well on this wine.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): #2224. Served double blind. For inside-joke reasons, we guessed that this was 2001 Dujac before even smelling, tasting, or seeing this bottle. Then I said that because it was tacked onto a Mascarello flight, it had to be Bartolo. Anyway, none of that is actually germane to this wine -- it's a very dark wine showing plenty of vanilla and coconut lactones, and with its fairly grippy tannins had me going through the list of modern(ish) producers, before settling on Aldo Conterno. The palate's display of oak isn't as overt as the nose, but despite the impressive black fruit and tannin, I found myself consistently getting distracted by the oak. Admittedly not my preferred style of nebbiolo.

  • Gang of 4 Sweet Lake Farewell tasting (@ RW): Beautiful and rustic bouquet with earthy flavors, autumn forest and minerals. On the palate the same impressions, good berries, full bodied, good, medium+ acidity and round still powerful tannin. Slightly mature, but still enough power for many more years. Beautiful, complex and harmonious wine.

  • After a slightly rough takeoff, the Vietti smoothed out after it reached cruising altitude. Great concentration of dark fruit, excellent acidity and firm but integrated tannins. Those at the table more familiar with Barolo than I said it’s in its early peak stage. Impressive stuff but I don’t think I could identify it blind as Nebbiolo.

  • Decanted for 4 hours. Still a bit youthful but drinking well. Lean and juicy. Quite tasty.

  • Decanted 5 hours and could have used endless more time. The nose is there but the palate is a bit clipped short by searing acidity and tannin. Hold 5, 10... more years. Massive wine.

  • Decanted approx 2h. Fantastic nose with loverly dark ripe cherries, roses, violets, tar and underbush. Incredibly juicy, energetic yet delicate and velvety. Soft tannins in a looong finish. Wonderful. Lots of life left in this one. 95-96p for now.

  • 2018 Visit to Vietti (Castiglione Falletto): After I got back home from my trip, Nick served this wine non-blind after my excellent 2001 Cavallotto San Giussepe. The Vietti was even better than the Cavallotto and is one of my wines of the year. A lovely bouquet of tar, black spices, earth and lifted dark florals. On palate, serious depth and volume, intensity and power, even more than for the Cavallotto. Also, more detail and nuance of flavour. A full peacock’s tail of flavours. Multi-layered. Well balanced. Tannins and acids well integrated. The Villero had a four hour full decant and airing, which was about right. On the evidence of this bottle, it is at the start of a long drinking plateau.

  • A delicious & well-balanced Barolo. It’s medium-deep garnet red in colour, full body, aromatic & savoury with black cherry, raspberry, oak & earthy note. Well-integrated tannin and alcohol after many years of aging in cellar. Definitely at its peak now. Bravo!

  • Barolo 2001 horizontal on February 15, 2018 (Maritozzo, Moscow): 95+/100

A slow, elegant and velvety Barolo, with bouquet of prune, suede, leather, earth, coffee, truffles, and violets. Great balance, yet it feels that it is still coming out of a long dumb phase and likely with open up more. A pensive one.

  • Vietti Barolo Villero Riserva 2001:

    Overview:
Full bodied, lengthy finish, perfect balance, great structure, great aging potential.  Should drink the wine 7-10 years later.

    1st glass:
On the nose, smell of oak is obvious, hidden after the curtain, some tiny traces of vanilla, cherry, cocoa, a bit woody and also a little caramel.  On the palate, acidic, firm tannins, but the flavours are still rather backwards.  Required patience.

2nd glass (6-8 hours): Starting to show more aromas. On the palate, dark fruit, spicy.

3rd glass (12 hours): Somehow the same as the 2nd glass, but with some seasame on the finish.

4th glass (22-24 hours): The nose is starting to mean real business. The fruity nose began to become expressive, also some grass, caramel and tar.  The tannins softened and becam velvety.  Finishes with seasame and tealeaves.

5th glass (30 hours): Similar to the 4th glass, not much developed.

6th glass (48 hours): Intoxicating and perfumed aroma, fruity but also some floral notes, just couldn't stop smelling.  On the palate, the acidity faded out a bit, but to a more adequate level.  The inner sweetness began to show.  Gorgeous.

7th glass (58 hours): The moment I have been waiting for.  After a marathon-like process, the wine finly began to show its beauty.  On the nose, fruity, floral but what impressed me the most is the scent of licorice.  On the palate, the tannin turned chewy, similar to that of Lazzarito 2006.  The wine became round, and its complexity remained.  Cocoa and vanilla was there and the dark fruit, blackcurrant and licorice were no longer too shy to show its beauty.

8th glass (70 hours): The last glass, not much change from the previous glass.  Full of sediments.

  • Inky, dark and so closed at the start but with about one hour of air this blossomed - amazing wine, so good, balanced, sweet, pure and really vibrant. Marvelous

  • Tannino ancora da addomesticare.
    estremamente persistente, di grande corpo.
Dopo 2 ore dà il suo massimo nei profumi dal cioccolsto al the nero con note iodate

  • Great bottle. Very expressive fruit emerged from glass right from the start. Complex aromas of licorice, menthol, dark ripe fruit gave way to a classic black tea finish that just kept on going. Still a baby and a lot less evolved compared with the ’97 I had middle of last year. Tannins mostly integrated now with a very polished mouth feel. This is a truly majestic wine with a lot of depth and power.

  • structure and power still dominate (check back when your grand-kids go to college?) very long with richness currently dominated by tannins and structure - but its all there.

  • Tasted blind at a Barolo 2001 tasting at "La Padella" (Nijmegen, The Netherlands). Quite dark, good balance. Fruity with interesting minerality. Great finesse and elegance. But when revealed the expectations were higher (considering its price...).
