  • (14% Alkohol) Sehr intakte, relativ dunkle Farbe. Grosses Nebbiolo-Kino. 96 vvPunkte

  • This had ~8 hours of air and showed a distinct, over toasty oak note from the initial pour until service. The oak was more resolved on the palate, which was dense and polished, but it was unmistakable throughout. From a more oak-agressive era at the domaine and it's not working well on this wine.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): #2224. Served double blind. For inside-joke reasons, we guessed that this was 2001 Dujac before even smelling, tasting, or seeing this bottle. Then I said that because it was tacked onto a Mascarello flight, it had to be Bartolo. Anyway, none of that is actually germane to this wine -- it's a very dark wine showing plenty of vanilla and coconut lactones, and with its fairly grippy tannins had me going through the list of modern(ish) producers, before settling on Aldo Conterno. The palate's display of oak isn't as overt as the nose, but despite the impressive black fruit and tannin, I found myself consistently getting distracted by the oak. Admittedly not my preferred style of nebbiolo.

  • Gang of 4 Sweet Lake Farewell tasting (@ RW): Beautiful and rustic bouquet with earthy flavors, autumn forest and minerals. On the palate the same impressions, good berries, full bodied, good, medium+ acidity and round still powerful tannin. Slightly mature, but still enough power for many more years. Beautiful, complex and harmonious wine.

  • After a slightly rough takeoff, the Vietti smoothed out after it reached cruising altitude. Great concentration of dark fruit, excellent acidity and firm but integrated tannins. Those at the table more familiar with Barolo than I said it’s in its early peak stage. Impressive stuff but I don’t think I could identify it blind as Nebbiolo.
