  • PnP. Light brick around the edges, looks aged. Fairly expressive and floral nose. Bright acidity of the vintage, fine tannins mostly softened, a rather nervy and lean style of burgundy. Full of autumn leafy notes with hints of stem lingering but not bothersome, also finished with old barrel spices. Keeps on improving in the glass, really grows on you. Quintessential Chambolle-Musigny. This has been on this drinking plateau for quite a few years, no risk of falling apart but also unlikely to improve further.

  • Tasted over 2 hrs
    -semi-translucent moderate bricking
-expressive spicy red fruit rhubarb stewed tomato warm earth sous bois herbal note
-med/med+ acidity elevates the med- weight gentle complex faded earthy red fruit, med/med- tannins frame the adequately long finish
-fully mature drinking beautifully in the zone and much more complete than the last time tasted in 2019, very pleasant nicely complex, a clear step up from the recently tasted '08 blended 1er cru and Chambolle village

  • PnP. Subtle nose, a lot more reserved than previous experiences. Mainly flower and stem notes. Light and sweet tannins on the entry, not showing high acidity of the vintage. Finished spicy and stemmy. A touch of bitterness at backend. Lacking excitement/energy of previous bottle, it’s probably in half asleep phase.

Mature and rich, a beauty from 08

  • Burgundy lunch at San Shu Gong: The most Chambolle of Chambolles. Bricking in colour, it had a lovely floral bouquet and the palate had the light touch and high-toned fruit of Bertheau. The acid of 2008 was present but wasn't too distracting because of the elegance of the wine.

  • Still drinks pretty well and with ease, super acidity leaning towards too acidic - agree with the previous reviewers re decaying leaves and dark soil which I like - but I should have finished this case 3 years ago.

  • Pretty, delicate, and pale with lots of developing character and sous-bois. Hard to imagine something this ghostly could continue to evolve, but Burgundy usually finds a way. Unlike some other notes here I did find the 2008 acidity to stick out a bit.
A glass one week later from Boston round was utterly brilliant from the get-go. Ghostly pale of course but just hauntingly gorgeous spice aromatics, just as delightful on the palate. No rush here, I'll probably take down a bottle every year or two until they're gone.

  • Day 2 sample from Heymamalow. Drank in Conterno Sensory.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of wet soil, leaf litter earth, minerals, dried rose petals, dried cherry. Developed.
On the plate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), resolved medium tannin, medium body. edium flavour intensity, with flavours of gentle sweet spice, savoury earth, salty minerals, dried red cherries, red plum, citrus orange peel, damp soil + decaying leaves. Gentle long finish with tart red fruit.
Very good quality. Has a certain aged charm to it, though personally I feel like I could have appreciated it more 3-4 years ago.

  • PnP. Beautiful nose, only matured Burgundy would give you such bouquet. Decayed leaves, dark soils, and flowers, reminded me of walking on trails in Canada during Autumn seasons, memories to cherish by. Dedicated and nervy on the palate, tannins mostly resolved, plenty of spices at finish, this was drinking beautifully. Ready but no hurry. Even better than previous bottle. Not a bottling that I purchase regularly from Bertheau but this vintage made a believer out of me. Only 0.66 Ha, so normal production should be around 290 cases. Unbelievable that I was able to source this case for £625 IB, what a bargain!

  • A very light and lacy Burgundy. Very good acid (duh it is an 08), present fruit and very fine, barely perceptible tannins. This got better and better with air and was best after a couple of hours (no decanting). I may be scoring this a bit on the low side..

  • PnP. ABV 13.5%.
Bricking at the edge, the color looked advanced. Similarly on the nose, autumn leaves, wet earth, and flowers. On the first sip, tannins mostly resolved, dedicated on the palate, no excessive acidity of the vintage, not overly complex but good balance. Certainly no trace of alcohol. Definitely ready for consumption, more like in the 7th inning than in the 4th inning. 1/12.

  • Tasted over 2 hrs
    -funky lifted red fruits
-med+/high acidity partly buffered by the med- weight but moderately concentrated high-toned red fruit, not very complex but excellent length, some bitter almost green notes accompany the med/med- tannins
-this bottle is nearing maturity, suboptimally balanced by the vintage's acidity; overall didn't quite live up to expectations for this cru and producer

  • The wine has a slim and precise profile and an amazing acidity. We had young red fruit combined with floral notes in a beautiful mix. Unfortunately the wine did not develop very well during the evening.

  • Cellaraid - A Night with Chef Kentaro (Shisen Hanten, Mandarin Orchard): clear, light ruby; clean, medium nose, of strawberry, raspberry, mint, thyme; dry, medium acid and tannins, light body, raspberry, fresh grass, rosemary; medium plus finish; went very well with wagyu beef!

  • Mineral infused fresh nose with lots of red fruit and hints of floral notes. There are also orange peel, ginger, roses and hints of citric notes.

Fantastic acidity with razor sharp precision and some citric notes that are otherwise mainly found in white wine like Chenin Blanc. The red fruit is both fresh and slightly sweet.

The wine has an amazing precision and elegance but lacks some complexity and length.

  • - | Barthod | Bertheau | Mugnier | Ponsot | Roumier | Vogue | -: This Charmes was not so easy. There was meat on its bones and acid with blackest fruits on its palate It was a bit weedy with a ‘green edge,’ but intriguing, deep and concentrated.

  • This was(luckily I think) my last bottle. A good enough wine. But as said before: Charmes from Bertheau should be much better than "good enough" The complexity if the decaying leaves is lovely but still in the mouth the wine is barely outstanding.....drink up.

  • I saw a couple of recent tasting notes suggesting this was prematurely aging so thought I would try one. This is a pale first pour, slightest orange hue and I was concerned. But the wine opened up and darkened to black after an hour withnthe initial simple nose taking on intensity and complexity. Now a very flowery elegant cherry pit fruit, sweet and lush, this has follow through. Deliteful, sandra loved it. All is as it should be, very feminine but I can see this is an early drinker, no measurable tannins.

  • More developed than expected. Nice nose of older roses and sweet pepper. The taste is fine but more of a letdown. Could be more complex and ends a little short for it's pedigree.

  • Unusually mature appearing with a hint of brown at the rim. Nose is beautiful with light strawberries, some beautiful elegant floral aromas, and wonderful spice. Palate shows nice elegant fruit and also some more mature savory and mineral notes. Not sure if this bottle has seen some improper storage conditions. Delicious but shouldn't look and taste this mature. Compared a remaining bottle of the Charmes and the Bonnes Mares from the same source. The other Charmes also has a flight brown rim compared to the pure ruby of the Bonnes Mares.

  • Burgundy 2012 Day 6: Visit to Francois Bertheau (Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy): Absolutely beautiful once again. This had an incredible nose, with cinnamon, spice and fragrant herb accents sprinkled over a sweeter core of strawberries, cherries and floral aromas. Gorgeous. The palate was at once sappy and juicy, with gorgeously clear notes of cherries and strawberries, flowers and spice, all swathed in a beautifully fine, velvety robe. Stored in M. Bertheau's cellar since it was bottled, this seemed to have developed a bit better than the already superb showing in Singapore several months back. While it had the same light, floaty elegance of the previous bottle, this also seemed to have just a tad more depth and grip, especially as it flowed from the delicious midpalate into a slightly chewy finish, where plummy notes were wed to a nice twist of orange peel. Beautiful now and probably over the next 5-6 years, this may not be the longest aging wine. But really, who cares when it is drinking so wonderfully now. Once again, the quintessence of Chambolle.

  • Bertheau made some breathtakingly ethereal wines in 2008 - this was a perfect example. Popped and poured over a dim sum lunch with Celk, it had gorgeous nose that just screamed Chambolle from the first glass, with lovely, perfumed scents of flowers and bright red cherries and fresh raspberries lined with just a little touch of savoury earth and iron inflections. Seductive, alluring, feminine - an altogether amazing nose. The palate was delightful for such a young bottle as well. This was possibly the most elegant wine I can remember drinking this year. Middle-weight and light on its feet, it had a glowing purity and wonderfully limpid transperancy to its gently sweet flavours of red cherries and berries. The tannins were ever so silky, and the bright acidity perfectly judged, leading the wine into a beautiful finish, where the pure fruit was met with a lift of orangey tones and a tiny kiss of spice. With time, a nicely umami, mushroomy note started wafting out as well. While neither the most powerful nor most complex of 1er Crus, this is what Chambolle is all about - balance, elegance, charm, seduction. Absolutely beautiful. It did shut down somewhat after an hour or so, showing a bit of austerity right at the very end, with the fruit leaning out into metally mineral notes. That apart, we enjoyed this bottle tremendsouly.

  • Tasting at Domaine Lafarge, Domaine Lamarche and Domaine Bertheau (Volnay, Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny): Some bottle development, red fruit, some spice, herbs, complex; palate is firm, light and fine tannins, beautifully mouth coating.

  • Wow! Beautiful flower burst! Delicious seductive silky and super attractive. Beam of pure Pinot fruits. Clarity and elegantly smooth. Superb wine. Drink and make love with it now. Don't wait. It is screaming to be enjoyed

  • Crazy good nose. So floral, perfumed, preserved cherries, roses, perfect. Wow, excellent balance, pure red cherries, wonderful balance and elegance. Drinking perfectly now. Only downside is that I find the fruit is a little thin, not sure how long this can last. But now its doing well.

  • Clear clean color, pale edges, a burgundy center.

Tasted after being opened for 8 hours (not decanted as far as i was told) and set in the fridge.

Intense raspberry, raspberry bush and other red berries. Very transparent reflecting terroir and showing a very elegant femininity!
On the palate it's superbly balanced between berries, floral notes, sweet spices, ripe subtle tannins and acidity. Intense but elegant still...

The finish is long and leaves you wanting for more, with notes of berries and flowers coating the mouth.

A very good example of both the terroir of Les Charmes and of Bertheaus style!
