Huet-A-Thon (Bay Area Edition): This was absolutely stunning. Notably less sherried and much fresher on the nose than the ‘02 Demi-Sec. Lively and complex on the palate with a wonderful balance of tertiary notes and receding white fruit and citrus flavors. The acidity is very much on point and makes the sweetness less pronounced (this drinks more like a demi-sec). Surpasses the ‘96 Le Mont Sec by a hair for Wine of the Day.

Apples, pears, honeycomb, a hit of ginger. Perfect amount of sweetness for our apple crumble and a big hit with the family at the end of Christmas dinner. Missing some acid to make this great, but it didn’t need to be any better for it to be fully enjoyed on the occasion.

Deep golden with amber tint. Complex nose and palate with quince, honey, minerals, pears, blossoms, citrus. On the palate light on its feet, yet with outstanding richness and intensity of flavors. Shows some grippy but round tannins in the finish, not as bitter as in some other première tries. 5/13/17/8. This is not sweet enough to go with or, for my taste, even as a dessert. Better as an apéritif or e. g. with game. -2028.
2002 Beaune and Volnay Premier Crus (San Francisco): Opened 2 hours before serving. Light golden. A discrete, lighter weight, less sweet Première Trie from Huet. Combination of red apple and pear, no botrytis, moderate intensity. Not unctuous at all but very enjoyable, fresh, and clean.
Two nights later, it is still quite fresh with more cinnamon and finishing Clos du Bourg soil, but now it is easier to sense a dip in concentration in the mid-palate. In the final analysis, I think this is an excellent but not great Huet 1ère Trie wine.

From 1/2 bottle. Excellent, but I expected more from this bottle. Very pretty honeyed apple/pear nose. Flavors delicious, honey & ripe apples, but lacking in acid & therefore lacking in brightness. Not as sweet as I expected. Time to drink, as while still very good, this is past its prime. With so little acid, the fruit will soon start dropping out.

Pop and pour. More honeyed and slightly more cloying than the Le Mont of the same vintage, but still very good. On the nose: honey, beeswax, soft oxidative notes, tarragon. Ok acidity, honey, herbs, honeycomb, fantastic density, loads of sweetness, but long finish.

Tasted NB. Light golden color. Distinct honey leads a sweet nose. Walnut and citrus feature during a persistent, evolving finish. A one of kind taste profile, one that doesn't lend itself to quick comparison. Tried letting bottle warm to room temp, but ended up re-chilling and preferring cooler sipping. Take time to really taste this one. Gotta love exploring old white wines.

Dark golden in the glass and showing a bit too much bruised apple along with the usual stone fruit and saffron. This seems a bit ponderous and lacking that extra gear that Huet can reach...this bottle is not horribly oxidized but it is certainly affected.

Weekend Chez K's; 7/30/2020-8/1/2020: Killer finish to the evening from a split; this was singing; classic Chenin blanc nose with earthy/hay/wool notes followed by rich baked apricot, honeyed peaches, poached pears, and white flowers. The palate was rich and unctuous, but had plenty of zippy acidity to keep it fresh and lead it into a long finish. Delicious.

Have tried over a few nights from a 375, not much change. This bottle is drinking very young. Honey, apple and Pear, sweet but not overly so, missing some complexity. I think this will develop with time. I am leaving my other two bottles to sleep and keeping fingers crossed they are not oxidized. If they are all in this condition they will have a long life and improvement ahead.
Social distance tasting out on the porch. Ended with this bottle, it was very good, but still a little too young and viscous for me even out of a 375ml. Definitely 93-94 potential. Lots of fruit and sugar still showing. Peach was prominent. Would wait 5-15 years on other bottles, size depending.

From 375. Poured honey gold with apricot and honeysuckle on the nose. Laser focused acidity lifted the mature flavors and sweetness for perfect balance. In a great drinking window and not showing signs of going south anytime soon.

From 375ml. Cork slightly loose and wine a bit oxidized. Honey and overripe peach on the attack, with grapefruit and almonds on the back end. Finish falls a bit flat. A little bit flabby and tired, this bottle was definitely hitting the end of its shelf life.

Very nice dessert wine. Aged honey, tattered ripe stone fruits, and brûléed pink grapefruit. Just a little touch of oxidized funk, which was great. Very high flavor intensity and a long finish. Plenty of acid to keep it feeling lightweight and on the drier side.
Paired with parmesan cheese, which was pretty good. Even better were rosemary-lemon shortbread cookies (https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2012/04/lemon-rosemary-shortbread-cookie-recipe.html). Drink now. "Excellent," 91/100.
Clos Roche Blast!: Rich and honeyed, but with plenty of acidity, it is surprisingly dry, showing more like a demi-sec than a moelleux. That lack of apparent sweetness makes it more of a palate-cleansing digestif than a dessert in and of itself, but also gives it much more versatility for pairing with food.

Great balance of apricot, white peach, and a touch of pink grapefruit to balance the slight sweetness. The final part of the finish is enhanced by the great acidity to bring you back to the glass.

The perfect complement to the flabby, oxidative 02 Le Mont Sec in the next glass, this does have more vibrancy. No oxidative notes, but you can see how the constituent aromatics were similar with the pear and apple on the nose. The sweetness is pleasant on the nose, without the complexity or vigor of fine Sauternes. Unfortunately that doesn't translate well to the palate, where again this falls victim to flabbiness on the mid palate. Innocuous really, failing to show much in the way of retro-olfactory interest or even of acidic drive / structure.

Sweet, but balanced and not cloying in any way. Amber hued, acidic enough to pair very well with spicy Indian food. Dead perfect pairing, I would say. Pineapple, stone fruit and honey on the palate. Distinctly chenin, clearly not a Sauternes, and, as fingers notes, a bit more like Auslese in the way it drinks. Consumed over two nights, this didn’t fade at all overnight in the fridge.

Didn’t quite impress me as much as it did 3+ years ago, but it is still a very nice, moderately sweet accompaniment for a variety of foods and should really be paired as you would an Auslese, not a Sauternes. Seems like it’s lost some of its fruity and acidic grip without replacing it with any complexity or secondary notes. Not sure I would bank on further improvement if I had more half bottles..... I’m sure the 750’s are doing better. 5+12+17+8= 92
Aromas of caramelized apple, pear, litchi. Medium/heavy body, sweetness is fairly intense, but balanced with acidity. Delicious. Magnificent with cheese. Seems like it's in a terrific place to drink right now but I'm sure it's got the structure to make old bones too.

GMs - Kevin Burgundy Dinner: Orange coloured. Mandarin, musk, apricot, lemon and earth on the nose. The palate is nicely balanced, with good fruit and a light savoury earth note along with a nicely tangy sweetness. Good length, it is just at a bit of an in between phase, without the depth and complexity of age, but doesn't have the explosive youthful character. Have another bottle that I'll try to leave 8-10 years.

Nose of pear (like canned pears in their juice), honey, and a touch of ginger. Ever so slightly floral too. Palate also has sweet pear plus tropical fruit, honey, and a little more ginger / white pepper feel than the nose lets on, particularly as it warms in the glass. There's apricot hiding underneath it all that peeks out in the finish. Not cloying at all because of half decent acidity. This is settling down into a great spot.
25 June 2016 Tasting at Phredd's: First desert wine, provided by Phredd. Solid molleux- apricot, orange blossom, pineapple, berries, some earthy / waxy hints, and a citrus-pith finish. Nice balance between tropical and citrus notes. Acidity keeps it on the lighter side. Would want to see more depth and concentration for a higher eval. Overall evaluation: A- (90).

I think mycellar01's note is spot on. From appearance to bouquet, I completely agree with his findings. It isn't as heavy as Sauternes and the flavors are Chenin all the way. I enjoyed this immensely more than the 2002 Le Monts 1ere trie. Followed this 375ml for five days open, storing in the fridge overnight and it never lost its verve or balance. 5+12+18+8= 93
One hour in the decanter. Deep golden Amber in colour. Full bodied goodness, rich without the weight of desert wines. Sweet mango, honey, papaya, rock melon, passion fruit, mineral. Mild lime pith acidic undercurrent carries throughout the palate to the fine endless finish. Chris's Birthday at The Bridge Room: Apricot and mandarin, with honey and cinnamon following on the nose. Pure, delicate and clean with excellent acidity and a mineral core that extends and lifts the fruit, there is sweetness but not as evident as I may have expected.

Despite being a first pick of botrytized grapes, this shows much vineyard and variety character. Heady deep meaty suggestions that put me in the mind of a Zind-Humbrecht pinot gris tasted recently, with just a mild sweetness totally counterbalanced by a woolly bitter finish. The delicacy here makes this wine super, if not massive or impressive in a stereotypical sense.

Rednecks & Rhones at Greg Ellis' house. I knew going into this that I was opening it way too young but I wanted to try one and felt I have enough in the cellar to "waste" one early. I'm very glad I did as I was surprised at just how well this is drinking now and very pleased with what I see as the future development of this wine. Light to medium yellow in color with a note of marzipan that seemed to match very nicely with Barb's Chai Cheesecake ( the cheesecake was great and probably anything would have been considered a good match! ). Moderate sweetness for a 1ere Trie with racy acidity. Very refined and sophisticated wine that I think surprised some in the room with limited Huet experience. In balance at this youthful stage and should be a great follow up to vintages like '59, '71 and '89. The upside potential on this wine is almost boundless. Now back to drinking those vintages while the rest of these age! 50+13+13+8.5+8.5 = 93++

Decanted for 3 hours. Full yellow to light golden color. Took some work, but a complex nose of spiced apple, pear, and honey appeared. Lightweight by dessert wine standards, this gained in weight and texture over time. Pure fruit, elegant, and to my surprise, the acidity was not that prominent. Excellent, elegant, and subtle, but the structure does not suggest that it will be one for extended aging (i.e., decades).

Chris's Birthday at The Bridge Room: Apricot and mandarin, with honey and cinnamon following on the nose. Pure, delicate and clean with excellent acidity and a mineral core that extends and lifts the fruit, there is sweetness but not as evident as I may have expected.

Citrus, sweet pear with some apple thrown in. Really kinda boring. Nothing bad, just not exciting.

Trip’s visit to DC - Ristorante Tosca (Ristorante Tosca, Washington DC): Classic Huet chenin nose, citrus, flower, mineral, beautifully perfumed and a hint of petrol. The palate displays bright acidity and nice length. Unfortunately it gets lost with sweeter stickies.

A gorgeous nose, intense honey with complex notes, citrus and mineral and flowers.
Delicious, just the right degree of sweetness to complement our paté, beautifully complex, excellent balance.
