A cardboard-dry bottle lacking fruit and balance. Hit and miss as I drink through the case. The prior bottle was very good, but this one mirrors another underwhelming one from last year. Maybe the hit-and-miss is our fate if we've saved this 15+ years.

This bottle is back on track, in contrast to the prior underwhelming one. I'm rating it after an hour of opening, when it performed far better than upon initial PnP. Maybe it would be even better after 2-3 hours, but I've hit my consumption for the night. Plan to aerate yours before drinking. Iron is the strongest note, in a positive way. Black cherry fruit with a hint of tartness follows. Plenty of complexity. This bottle drinks within its peak window and suggests another 5-10 years of interesting evolution for my remaining 7 bottles.

Prior bottle was just over two years ago and this wine continues to show positively. Black and red cherry, iron, spices and leather on the nose. Between medium and full bodied and still takes a few hours to fully open up and come together. Flavor profile is very similar to prior bottles with red cherry upfront, moving to deeper red cherry and black cherry through the middle and adding light plum behind. Mid-body shows better balance than previously with the acidity, tannins, tart cherry, spices earth and minerals behind providing support and contrast, but the mid-body fruits shows very good clarity. Like my prior bottle, felt that this wine continues to gain harmony with age. It will never live up to some of the professional critics original scores, but it's certainly showing quite well and in a fashion it should be able to maintain for several more years; no hints of fading.

Not a great bottle. Lacked fresh fruit, which is OK if it had transitioned to elegance, but it didn't have that either. Hope my remaining eight bottles perform better, as I fear this might have been better in its youth.

Popped and poured. Nose of cherries, flowers, and raspberry. The wine still tastes very young and fresh. It was pretty astringent, at first, but opened up over several hours.
Great flavors of cherries, berries Truffle, and flowers with a wonderful acid level that paired extremely well with a great dish of spaghetti and meatballs with a rich marinara sauce.
This wine still has years left and will likely continue to improve with more time in the cellar....drink or hold.

Prior bottle was just over a year ago and this wine continues to evolve positively. Red cherry, iron, leather and spices on a nose that got more aromatic and more classic the longer it was open. Between medium and full bodied with rounded red cherry and slightly brighter and more high-toned red berries upfront. Gains depth through the middle and shows a mix of red and black cherry. Some hints of plum come in towards the back along with tart red cherry, earth, minerals, spices and leather. The finish has very good length and as the tart notes, acidity and tannins continue to integrate, the transition from mid-body to finish feels smoother and more seamless. Overall, the wine feels more harmonious and was showing quite well by the three hours mark and even better at four. As well as it's showing now, given how well the fruit is holding up and how balanced the structural notes are becoming, this wine should continue to improve. I might open my next bottle as soon as Fall 2022, but might just save it until 2023.

Cherries, baking spices, walnut, dusty tannins. Long, very nicely balanced, beautiful finish. Sophisticated is the word that comes to mind. I think there is room for further development and improvement. 92+

Prior bottle was almost 13 months ago and my notes were consistent. It did take considerably longer to open up than I had anticipated as it didn't show its best until almost 5 hours after opening.
Red cherry, iron, leather and spices on the nose. Between medium and full bodied with the same red cherry and red berry upfront as my prior bottle. Mid-body continues to slowly open up, showing good depth and roundness with some hints of blackfruit notes popping up. Backside shows tart red cherry, minerals, earth, spices and leather. The tannins are still a notable presence as they slowly continue to integrate. Based on the structure that this wine still has and the positive fashion in which the fruit continues to show, I think it still has some room for improvement. Next bottle for me will be Fall 2021.

Pnp over 2.5 hours. Complex, well-balanced, and vibrant; a feminine wine that evolves beautifully in the glass. Red berries, summer flowers, and summer forest, with a finish of perfectly tasty fruit shaded by hints of eucalyptus, coffee, flowers, and smoke. Really lovely and no reason to wait now-2022.

3 hour decant. This 2007 Cascina Nova from Elvio Cogno is just getting into its stride. Rich and powerful but well balanced with fruit concentration and acidity. Bright cherry fruit, licorice and a touch of leather. Continued evolving in the glass until the end. Delicious stuff

Prior bottle was almost exactly two years ago and the wine has improved noticeably in that time. Nose continues to show red cherry, iron, leather and spices. Between medium and full bodied now with a flavor profile that continues to be red cherry and red berry upfront with a good blend of brightness and openness, adding lightly tart red cherry towards the back and finishing with minerals, earth, spices and a touch of leather. Where this wine has improved is in the mid-body, which showed considerably more roundness and balance than previously. The backside is better integrated and the spices, tannins and acidity are all much more in balance with the fruit. The result is a wine that feels more open, more polished and more accessible. In prior bottles, the structural notes could sometimes overwhelm the fruit, but it's clearly trending in a good direction now. Next bottle for me will be Fall 2020, but I suspect this wine still has a good number of years ahead of it.

A beautiful Barolo. Floral and cherry notes on the nose. The palate has cherry, violets, and tar, with rather prominent tannins and acidity. Long finish, with lots of cherry.
There have been some mixed reviews of this wine, but I think it’s fantastic right now. Perfect with a medium-rare filet. Might gain one or two points with another year or two, but very enjoyable right now.

Prior bottle was a bit over 15 months ago and this wine is still quite young, more so than I expected. Opened three hours ahead of time and really didn't start to open up until about the six hour mark. Red cherry, iron, leather and spices on the nose. Close to full bodied with red cherry and red berry upfront. Does gain some roundness through the middle, exactly as the prior bottle did. Retains lots of tart acidity throughout as well as strong tannins towards the finish with noticeable drying. Minerals, tobacco and leather again on the finish. Overall, I would say my notes from June 2016 haven't changed much at all. Clearly needs some additional time and has the fruit to do well with that time. I'd push the window on this wine out and I plan to try my next bottle in Spring 2019 at the earliest. While this will almost certainly improve with additional cellar time, I don't think it will ever live up to the effusive praise the professional reviewers originally gave it.

So traditional and cerebral, a thinking wine and not a drinking wine. It hits all those oh so barolo notes. Tar and roses and violets and leather and sour cherry. No modern stuff here, no cinnamon vanilla chocolate baking spice whatsoever. So youthful and not even close to aging yet. A really wonderful wine.

Uno de mis vinos tinto del año. Que gusto dar tomar cosas ya hechas.
Tomada en El Ermitaño de Benavente.
Madera y alcohol tremendamente integrados.

In some ways a classic Barolo, with cherry, plum and tobacco. The tannins are quite robust and at this point dominate the wine. The fruit is tight and closed, and even with a long decant did not fully open up. I suspect this will become much better in a couple of years.

Classic nose: red cherry and strong floral notes along with iron and leather. Between medium and full bodied and 14.5% ABV. Red cherry and red berry upfront and then the wine brightens noticeably and takes on almost a plush density through the middle before finishing with moderate to strong tannins as well as minerals, tobacco and leather on the finish. The bright richness through the middle was the highpoint for this wine. Based on fruit, it still has plenty of time left and should improve over the next few years. My hope is as the tannins further integrate, we get more complexity through the middle.

Note: allowed to "warm" from 57 F to room (serving) temp for a week. Decanted for 6 hours. Paired with Italian spice-rubbed Rib eye.
Decanting phase: wonderful nose of red berries & flowers. But sample sip had intrusive tannins. After 6 hours decanting: less fruit aroma, but tannin softened. Color: brick and orange (aging) hue Nose: hints of cedar, flowers. Body: smooth, medium body Taste: only hints of berries, good acidity, integrated tannins.

APPEARANCE: Medium intensity, brickish, orange hue, 1/4” to the meniscus.
AROMA: Classic tar and roses with a hint of licorice.
BODY: Smooth and velvety.
TASTE: Not a lot of fruit, just a hint of red berries, mainly cherry. Notes of brine and sandalwood add a lot of complexity, nicely woven together.
FINSH: Finish was long and complex, tannins were gentle.
OVERALL: Well balanced, nice mouthfeel. Extremely surprised to find out how young this wine is. A very elegant, classy wine with the acidity to go for years to come. The entire group thought this to be the oldest wine of lineup.
SCORE: 92 RATING: 2nd out of 8 for me, 1st for group

Nose: earth, mushrooms, fruit. Taste: follows the nose. Although the tannins are soft they are still rather prominent to my taste. Firm acidity. Probably needs two or three more years of keeping at least. Less rich and powerful than the Elio Altare (see my note of 10-08-12), but nevertheless an interesting wine. Might well be class in the making with a good QPR. For now 88, potentially 89+.

Decanted for 2 hours. I know...this is too young now, but I couldn't resist. Really gorgeous on the nose, with tobacco, flowers, liquorice and hints of vanilla. On the palate, this is full bodied, elegant, classy with refined tannins. It has structure to keep evolving for the next 10 years. Really good entry level Barolo. Totally recommended! Decant it for at least 4 hours!

Dried rose petals, rosemary. Big tannin on the attack, but finishes with chalky tannins and nice dusty, loamy earth and cherry flavors. This needs another 5 years though.

Dried rose petals, rosemary. Big tannin on the attack, but finishes with chalky tannins and nice dusty, loamy earth and cherry flavors. This needs another 5 years though.

Decanted this for a couple of hours, went nicely with easter ham. Young of course, but the tannin doesn't destroy your palate.
