Thematic Thanksgiving (Los Gatos, California): Light red. Again, some brett on the nose, maybe more subdued than the 2009 Vieilles Vignes. Back to a much lighter weight than the 2009. Blackberry fruit, crisper acidity than the older wine, more soil. Very good and I found the brett less distracting.

Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah What a nice surprise! I did not treat this bottle well regarding storage and I left it open for 5 days. Clear, deep garnet color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose with some harsh, green notes, brett, herbs, fine oak, mellow tannin and red fruit. Quite complex and multi-layered. Bone dry, medium+, lively and well-integrated acidity. 13% abv. Medium+, mellow tannin. On the palate fine red fruit (red currant), garden herbs, spices and forest soil. Very cool and a bit rustic, but also with a nice rough elegance, good texture and grip. Two years ago I thought it is at its peak, but when a bottle shows that well after five days open, I guess there is much more to come. Really beautiful and surprising! 92+

A bit disappointing. Thin and sour tasting, but with some good savory notes and red fruit. I have another bottle to hang onto to see if it gets better (maybe the acidity is protective?) but mostly it was a disappointment.

Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah Drunk over multiple days. Clear, deep ruby-garnet color. Medium intense, fully developed nose with fine oak, some animalic notes, wet soil, red fruit. Dry, medium body, medium acidity and fine-grained, present tannin. Clearly driven by the red fruit, but never juicy or simple. This is certainly a serious effort and has nothing to do with Beaujolais Nuveau... Elegant red fruit, combined with some earthy/soil notes, spices from elegant, well integrated oak. Joyful to drink with a medium+ finish. Certainly at its peak and I doubt it will gain complexity with age, when the fruit will continue to vanish. So drink in the next few years.

I'm a little confused about this wine since it still seems tight and tannic. I'm going to bet that it's better in a few years and change my drinking window

Tight, a little reductive and awkward on opening, this fleshed out with a couple of hours in decanter. It's not the most complex but it is sturdy, a little meaty and showing black/blue fruit and evident cote de py minerality. Good density gives a weight which reminds me of the northern Rhone, but without sacrificing Beaujolais freshness. No hurry and, on the basis of others' notes, seems to be coming into its window.

The fruit has fallen away a little too quickly leaving this wine a tad metallic - flat - industrial. Quelle horror. The acids don't have a counterpoint so there is that element of just plain old sour as well.
Flat and sour and you wonder why I am as generous as an 86?
Me too.......
Last tasted two years ago with much better results. Que pasa? Another tainted bottle?

I feel that this is like the straight Cote du Py wanting to masquerade as a Burgundy. The nose is charming and very deep, but the palate is less vibrant and energetic than the normale CdP. These "special cuvees" in Bojo rarely seem to do it for me.

Could not get past the perfume on this one!!! It was as if the aomas and palate were sourced from a women's perfume store! To my palate, and I may not be using the correct definition of the word, but "flabby" came to mind. It was as if the wine just sloshed around inside my mouth without any sense of bearing or place to get anchored. Needless to say, although I tried hard to find something anything to redeem it...down the drain half the bottle went. The only worse news is that I have another bottle left. Oh well, summer's coming so I now have my first candidate for Sangria. (I'm not going to rate this as if I did, there's no way I could do so as 'good', which would mean at least an 80 and I'd struggle to get it in the 'Average' range of 70-79.) I can see why the CT Auction price is only $10! In looking at some of the previous TNs, it's as if I've drank a different wine.

The colour (a kind of dark oxidised blood red) makes it look old, yet it's only three years old. The nose smells of wild French woodland berries of blackberry and even a little blackcurrant. There is a sweet lift - like confected glace cherry. The palate jumps into action, awash with those juicy berries - they are both sweet and sour at the same time, and they don't taste too ripe (confected, jammy, or "sweet"). Agree with Schildneckt's marine minerality. There's an almost-firm acidity and some gritty grainy tannins.

Really pretty and clean light red fruit on the nose. On the palate this is hidden behind some hard tannins and quite a bit of acid. Could be really enjoyable down the road if it all integrates.

Tart cherries, blackberries, graphite, cocoa powder, earth, flowers (moreso in a burgundy glass), minerals, and some brown spices. Tart cherry, earth, minerals, red cherry, and some spice on the palate. Lots of tart and juicy acidity, fine tannins, good medium length finish. Overall, this was very enjoyable in a fairly modern, full, masculine style. 88+

France Trip-Loire Valley and Paris; 10/22/2012-10/28/2012: Ruby. Crackling aromas of licorice and tart black fruit. Light weight, fresh, increasingly floral. Precise fruit with terrific acidity. Much more amplitude than your typical 2010 Beaujolais has. Really good. For now and intermediate term.

Very much like the normal Côte du Py, has the same precision, linearity and freshness, but with a little more weight, concentration, warmth and depth, in particular on the nose. Should be able to age very well.

Beaujolais Bonanza (Sydney, Australia): Cherry, light cinnamon, violets and an element of game. The palate is approachable, with plush fruit and well integrated bright acidity. I think there is the potential and structure to age well over the medium term even though it is good now.

I am a huge fan of Burgaud, but this one was pretty average. Very bright and juicy; though I like lots of acidity this had too much, perhaps another year or two are needed to flush out? Good fruit and some decent minerality, though a bit too thin.
