Boxing Day wines at Domaine: Took some time to stretch it's legs and open up. When it did very classic meaty Gevrey smoke and spice laced throughout still fresh and concentrated fruit. In it's peak window, with some air, and should hold for a decade+.

Nose: white pepper, bubble gum, rose petals, rice cake, earthy Notes: When the wine was first opened it was quite stiff and unwelcoming but after 2 hours it turned out to be extremely floral and elegant. A highly aromatic and deep wine after some breathing, Rousseau demonstrates that Gevrey can be made in an elegant and fulfilling manner without being too feminine and that is a delicate and expensive balance. This is an amazing effort from AR, had this side by side with another AR Charmes Chambertin 2007 and I would say it is a close match with the Charmes but right now the charmes is marginally better, I think this is probably the result of a better vintage but slightly less superior cru. I suspect 3-5 more years would make this even better. Drink: 2028+ Rating: 92 pts

Acker April 2019 (Marea in NYC): Another favorite of the tasting. Just a bit more years than the wine before it and those seemed to add a bit more nuance to the wine. Fruit came across a bit darker. Tannins more there and with a grippiness to them. Still, this is a light and very balanced wine. The kindof wine I think most burg drinkers chase and the kindof wine that makes me understand why ppl chase burg.

Dinner at Matt and Francesca’s (Vancouver, BC): Opened and served right away. After reading salil’s note below (11/30/2012), I don’t have much to add as he pretty much nailed it. Pretty, pure and polished with floral notes and sappy red fruits. Medium weight with fine tannins and drinking well in a youthful way. A long life ahead but no shame in opening one now. Excellent. 92+

Round Table dinner at Jake's (NYC): Very pretty; incredibly polished and elegant with a core of sappy red fruits framed by gentle spicy, floral and savoury earthy notes. It's still incredibly youthful with the fruit very fresh and plenty of fine grained tannins on the back end, but the balance and purity here make it really compelling to drink even though it's so young.

This is, I think, quite under-rated. This was one of the more enjoyable bottles of Burg I have had in recent times. I cracked this because I read Burghoud's initial review projecting that 2011 would be past the tail end of the drinking window. This bottle was far, far younger than that (my girlfriend aptly suggested this wine is likely at the front end of the drinking window). Still relatively youthful, showing only some development (positive). A relatively large-scaled Burg (right for a Gevrey 1er) with tremendous spiciness (almost a cayenne heat, but not at all from alcohol). Robust fruit and still good structure. A bit of lovely game meat. Some earth, but this is more of a "clean" wine. Nits to pick? Could use a bit more midpalate weight, and could be a touch more refined. But when wine is this enjoyable, who cares?

Very light color, ruby red rim of low extraction. On the nose, subtle but beautiful aromatics led by soily earth notes, incredibly pure red cherry fruit and exotic new French barrique spices. With air the wine develops some darker fruits, florality. On the palate pretty close to perfection... a very slow upslope of firm acidity that transitions effortlessly into a broad midpalate that again transitions seemlessly into firm tannic finish of moderate integration, ripeness. Low alcohol. Great balance, average length, good intensity, moderate+ complexity. Incredible finesse, nearly perfect texture, amazing expression of place... very masculine wine 2/3 of the way into the palate. The wine is in a relatively good place now but I suspect will be better in 3-5 years. "Extraordinary" palate, "very good" complexity and aromatics = "outstanding" for me though I'd be lieing if I said I wasn't expecting more from this producer, site, and vintage.

Acker 2019/05 (Zuma): Despite the vintage fruit, this wine is slightly broken on the palate. 92

Acker April Auction 2019 (sad day) (Marea): Minty, sois bois, fairly floral, animalistic. Good ageing without too much of the vintage ripeness. 92

Mature but in no danger of decline. Perfectly acceptable, but rather generic and difficult to get excited about.
