This would be a good wine to give someone a first taste of Amarone. It’s big, savory and pruny but in a milder form than some of the bigger, more famous versions. Nice accompaniment to a stew or hearty meal

From a 375ml bottle. I previously had the 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 vintages of this wine. This 2008 was by far my least favorite. 80% Corvina Veronese, 15% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta. 15.5% alcohol. Not decanted and heavily sedimented. This was a port without the sweetness. Full bodied and loaded with prunes and raisins. Really a bruiser of a red wine. Too over the top for me. 85 points.

Obviously a powerful, plummy wine but it has a lovely freshness and is surprisingly light. Carries its 15.5% alcohol very well, and there is no sign of age. Plenty of life ahead.

Rather elegant for a Amarone, long and balanced, but also with ripe, sweet cherrie fruit. Went well with rich bbq, as the soicynes from the food matches the wine nicely.

Coravin fun - Chardonnay and random reds (Day Street, Marrickville): From coravin. Ripe cherry and raisins, slightly menthol and vegetal notes lend a porty air. Creamy as well. Preposterously big in the mouth, chalky tannins but only medium plus intensity. Quite porty on the palate as well. Touches of ripe plums & chocolate as well. Fair amount of alcohol heft here as well. Travels long. I rather like this. In a good spot but really needs and exceptionally rich stew to make it shine.

Decanted for 3 hrs. Dark fruit, prunes, raisins, dried cherries, Port notes. Concentrated, but not jammy, nice acidity, full-bodied, long finish. Big wine.

Nose was very powerful with huge, slightly potty raisins, plum and chocolate. Palate was equally big and bold with very creamy, viscous tannins and fruits. The alcohol was detectable with slight heat on both nose and palate. The aftertaste was long and lingering with plum notes.

Drank at Bob's Steakhouse, paired with steak dinner. One of our party chose the wine - I've never had amarone, so this was a new experience. Dark, sweet, raisiny character - almost like a port. Some alcohol on the palate. A different wine and I suppose good in its style, but not sure I like this type of wine. GOOD.

Decanted for an hour but really opened up after two. The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like forest floor, mushroom, raisin, black currant (cassis) and meaty. It tastes like raisin, cherry, forest floor, mushroom, oak and smokey bacon. The body is full. The wine has leathery texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Coravin'd a few ounces. Medium ruby color with lighter rim. Aromas of blackberry, dark plum, dark rum, chocolate, sour cherry, earthy minerality, herbal. On the palate - black fruit, leather, herbal, sour cherry. Full bodied, high tannin, high acidity, high alcohol (15%). Long finish with the sour cherry, leather and tannins lingering. Nice, but not quite memorable.

This is more modern in style than some of the other Amarone Classicos. Incredibly rich aromas and flavors made this the top wine at Pappas' Amarone tasting, in my opinion. It is more extracted than the Ca' Rugate or the Brigaldara of the same vintage, and has a much heavier oak overlay. It is still very young and tight, despite decanting, but promises to be very ageworthy. Put it away and try it again in five to ten years.

Bordeaux Index - Great Winemakers of Italy 2013 Tasting (London): A bit dissapointing. It clearly had the full bodiedness, but lacked complexity and wow factor. It was just a bit too unstructured for me. Clearly a nice wine and one I would always be happy to drink, but not quite up there with other producers on the day. 2/3 = Good to Very Good

Taste: Full bodied with big and chewy tannins. The structure is very noticeable along with complex tones of cherries, chocolate, spice tones, plums, and red fruits.
Overall: This is a really good amarone, and it can get better with time. While it is certainly a bigger wine, there is good balance and depth on both the nose and palate.

Popped and poured. Lots of dark fruit, slightly dry on the finish, well balanced as the fruit conceals this wines structure. Definitely built for some time in the cellar, but drinking well now. This is a very rich and delicious wine, will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years.
