  • Pale garnet with copper highlights, some bricking and a medium viscosity (13.5% ABV). On the nose this aged Pinot has medium (+) intensity aromas of cherries jubilee, strawberry compote, earth, rose, baking spice, vanilla thread, Goji berry, Rooibos tea and baked lingonberry. The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity, medium body and medium (-) tannins that are fully integrated. The flavors are somewhat tart but I get cherry, strawberry, baking spice, rose and Rooibos. It's a rather stark difference from the power and intensity of the nose- I was hoping for a grand slam but the unripe nature of the fruit is a little underwhelming. The finish is long which makes up a point or two and the structure is still there for more aging yet I doubt the fruit will shine, perhaps more tertiary development is possible. This is the third bottle I have tasted of this wine in 12 years, it still does't quite live up to my desires- 89 points and for $55 it's a 3 star effort. Cellar at your own discretion.

  • As (or more) enjoyable than many recent bottles from my beloved Lafarge and d’Angerville. I love volnay and this bottle came across my way for a good price. It had a beautiful taste of cherries and handled the 2008 acid with perfection. I wish I bought more.

  • russk. CDC at Andrea's.She brought. So lovely, earthy, tertiary, reminding us why we do love Burgundy, and why we should. A WOTN for me and many of you.

  • Single blind tasting
Pale garnet color with mild bricking
Medium aromas of mushroom/ forest floor and turned earth with touch of cherry but not much fruit to speak of
Medium bodied with bright palate of fresh red fruit and dust - rather simple actually
Medium tannins and medium plus acidity with medium alcohol and average finish

After two days on the counter, this wine really improved. The aromas became more complex and with the red fruit becoming more integrated in what was initially one composed of secondary aromas. In contrast, the palate was no longer dominated by fruit, but had taken on fascinating soy/ umami tones.
Previously rated 90, now easily 92 after a couple day
Fascinating wine and based on these notes, could prob stand more time in the cellar

Of note, this appears to be the final vintage of this vineyard under this winemaker, as it has sold

Drink now. Palate has not kept up with the aromatics to age anymore

  • This took its sweet time to open up. At first, it had sour cherries and a bit an astringency but still in balance. The last glass, after a few hours had blossomed. The cherry became deeper. earth tones kicked in. acidity faded in background but provided structure. Really good juice here. Could easily go another 5-10 years.

  • Mixed French Wines (Irene's): There is good elegance, red cherry, acidity, and it is lean. This is Burgundian.

  • Mixed French Wines at Irene's (Irene's House, St. Paul): Light medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. This has evolved another step from my previous bottle over 2 years ago. The nose is now full and expressive immediately, lovely nuanced florals and dried spice, bright red fruits, and dried forest floor. The palate is feminine, with rosewater, rose petals, tart red berries, tart cherry, dried earth, and powdery tannins. Wish I'd bought more now.

  • If (as I do) you like your Burgundies with sour-cherry fruit, this one is in your sweet spot (or maybe I should say tart spot?). I do strongly recommend air. On opening, it was rather simple and light, though the fruit was already quite nice. I'd give it 89-90 as a pop'n'pour, but that would be a mistake. Day two, it gained weight, complexity, and length of finish. Still holding up very nicely on day three.

  • PnP. Color is transparent, ruby red with some orange at the edge. Aromas of cherry, barnyard, wet dirt and savory herbs. Flavors of tart cherry, savory herbs, some funk, leading to a tart, linear middle, light+ body, medium- to medium acidity, light tannin and a touch of wood leaving a mouth-watering finish. Drinking with and after dinner of grilled tuna with a broccoli, mushroom and tomato risotto. The wine is very slowly adding some depth and body through the first 40 minutes open with a bit more tannin and a more neutral finish.

  • Bright red fruit, a touch of earth, and nice elegance. Enjoyable wine.

  • Wow Strawberry Fields forever is how I would describe this wine! The color is a pale red like the juice leftover when you have fresh strawberries. The nose is fantastic because in my book if you can sniff it 2 inches from the top of the glass that’s an awesome nose. Long lingering finish of strawberries and ripe watermelon.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited by a Red Burgundy and I’m hopeful that a bunch I collected from WTSO 6-7 years ago will be worth the investment. I’m glad that patience has paid off.

  • Strange nose, ok flavors. Of the 7 wines at the party this was the unanimous choice for last place. Very disappointed with it. Seemed to get better over the evening. Everyone said it was ok, but that was the best it could do.

  • Enchanting, and finally in its preferred plateau. Has come quite some distance since the last bottle seven months ago - now there's really good secondary aromas/flavors, and even some tertiary, too. Sappy core, tobacco, minerals and lots of earth-stained dead leaves. The last part was key as this wine really took a shining to the wild mushrooms in cream sauce dish. This was so enjoyable on the night, and I can only hope that my last one, which I will wait (at least) 2 more years for, will be even better. recommended

Aerated in decanter 90 minutes, served non-blind over the following 90 minutes. Dreamy.

  • Begins lightly colored even for a Pinot Noir, but has nose filling aromas of red cherry, violets, and earth. The sip is brightly acidic, dry, tannic, and smoothly aged, with a combination of juicy red cherry and pit. The finish is the best part of the taste, with fine juiciness and the first sign of being mouth caressing, sharing the stage with enjoyable fruit. For the first 3 days open, the wine lacked the concentration and complexity a 1er cru Volnay should have, but by day 8 open, the last 2 inches of the wine improved in every way - darker, richer, smoother, and better integrated. Either let it age another 3 years, or pour it out and back into the bottle twice if you want to start drinking it the same day.

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Alpharetta, GA): See through reddish orange, looks older than what it is; soft, aged sour cherry, some orange, subtle richness, spice; soft and caressing on the palate, still quite fresh, glycerin and sappiness, complete mouthfeel, good balance, seemed older to many of us but this wine is quite the opposite, more time would be best for this.

  • Light medium ruby color. PNP, split bottle over 3 hours with tasting menu. I found this to very good, a lovely feminine, elegant expression of Volnay. The color is fairly light, but do not let that fool you. There is some depth to the flavors here. The nose starts off a bit slowly, muted red fruits and spice that gradually over 20 to 30 minutes really develops well to show more delineated red cherry and red berry fruits with a nice mix of spice and eventually some dried earthiness. The palate was there from the start, but like the nose it kept improving over the first 2 hours. Lighter medium body but vibrant red berry and cherry flavors, lovely acids, spices and mineral notes with a touch of earth. It all comes together so nicely, finesse and balance with fine tannins. In a very nice place. 91+pts.

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Alpharetta, GA): Crimson core with orange brick rim, looks older; fennel, sour cherry, black tea, dried orange peel, almost liqueur like, kind of linear, sharp on the finish, resolved just waiting on acid to settle a little more.

  • A little bitter.

  • Most people will probably want to decant this after taking a first whiff. Me, I like the poopy, earthy beginning, just like I enjoy the ending (some 2hrs in) that's spice filled, with a nose of sweet red fruits, earth and mushrooms. Yes, this took on quite a transformation - on the nose, anyway - during the 2 hours it was being poured, but the palate didn't have quite the same transformation, it remained in the same light+ bodied pose throughout. VG acids, very fine tannins and a cool, gentleness about it that would be sure to drive fruit-bomb lovers heads to explode. I'll open my next/final one in some years and hope that the fruit has filled out just a touch, and are more balanced with the vibrant acids. 13,5%

    Slow-O 2 hrs, served non-blind.

  • Very pleasant weeknight wine. Light in color with not much on the nose. A little sediment. Medium acidity, typical Burgundian Pinot with subdued tartness. Fades away.

    Tannin: barely detected
    Body light
    Finish medium
    88.

  • Delicious, slightly syrupy but overall a nice combination of red fruit, earth, and herbs. Lighter end of medium bodied. Went very well with duck confit.

  • Very good, drinking very well. Light on its feet, translucent color. Modest nose, juicy acidity, balanced. Not particularly complex but a terrific wine for a summer evening with grilled salmon. Should come together nicely in the coming years.

  • Pale ruby color with aromas of tobacco and dried herbs. Maybe a little reductive, but blew off quickly to reveal red berry fruit and baking spice. Mouthwatering acidity and very soft tannin structure. Should be fun to see where this one goes.

  • Popped, aerated, poured. Lovely light red, on swirling, it greeted me with a pronounced nose of strawberries and raspberries. On the palate, more abundant berry fruit plus notes of pepper and a hint of clove. Medium bodied, svelte, elegant finish. Summer in a glass! Loved it.

  • Very light in colour, with a reddish hue that is reminiscent of very young wine. Quite peppery and dusty on the nose, and some slight aromatic red fruit peeking through. On the palate, this is very light on its feet, with loads of fresh acidity and very young tannins. Somewhat fruity palate, and a medium length finish. Not a great wine, but definitely good and drinkable pinot noir.

  • Too young. Don't touch for at least 2...and probably not for 6-8 years.

Right now it's got aggressive red & black sweet fruits and the tannins reek more of the must and clay earth...maybe this'll get a lot rounder with age.

  • Trip to Burgundy; 6/7/2009-6/10/2009 (The Cote d'Or): From barrel. A little closed, but one could already pick out a very complex nose. Porcini mushrooms, rich dark fruit in the shape of dark cherries and plums and a nice earthiness. Very clean palate, yet with plenty of depth and concentration. Again, plenty of dark cherries moving into a smoky, minerally fiinish. Very good. 90-91
