Two 1999 Cortons Tasted (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Nose was completely absent, must be in a dumb stage, the entire tasting. on the palate, medium/big body, opened very slowly over 2 hours to win the tasting, old style red Burgundy, very tasty, lovely red fruit, mouth filling, and a medium/long finish.

Dom Perignon and 3 1999 Red Burgundy (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Nose of sweet and sour fruit, black cherry, red cherry, and mocha, nose needed a lot of coaxing which hurt the score, same on the palate, big body, tasty, sweet taste, lovely fruit, almost mouth filling and a long finish. From 75cl, perfect cork, not decanted, enjoyed over 2 hours after opening. In far better condition than my previous bottle (24.12.2012), this is obviously still young, with an intense, virile blood-red colour, slight bricking to rim and an almost oily texture which flows distinctly slowly in the glass. Scent: cepes, beef tea, salt, fresh blood. Entry medium-bodied, but grows more serious over a non-linear palate with phases of glycerine-smoothness, challenging gamey highness (roast pigeon/venison/juniper-berry...), juicy plum/(over)ripe black cherry fruit, residually rough powdery tannins, and vivid red-fruit acidity (oops, was that just a flash of Chambolle-Musigny?) The finish is tingling, electric, "burgundian". Fine now, 2 hours after opening (at first we thought it was a bit stewed, but that soon changed). Time in hand. 90(-91[+?])P

From 75cl, perfect cork. A bottle of impeccable provenance, opened 1 hour, but not decanted. Good quality, ripe, four-square, black cherry-style pinot noir, lacking acid balance, charm or secondary flavour interest. Now fully mature. Perhaps just a hint of earthiness on the mid-palate (but then we spent the whole evening trying really hard to find anything which distinguished this wine from a slightly tired Leyda Valley or Russian River Valley PN - and failed). 86P

Nice ripe Pinot Noir. At first, lots of barnyard and forrest-floor on the nose. Wet flannel, white pepper and slightly burnt cardboard. After an hour of decanting ripe and juicy cherry fruit make their way. The wine has amazingly sweet and juicy tannins. It is - despite its quite ripe and morbid nose - fully bodied and equipped with freshly acid. After more decanting-time this wine gains more depth and fascinating. This seems to go on and on. Inspiring wine!

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted blind. Accessible and easy, both surprising for such a young Corton from such a good vintage. Lots of red fruit, very good texture. At a nice point between with good fruit flavors and evolved character emerging. I expect this will have a long life ahead.

I've long said that Tollot Beaut offers a great opportunity to introduce New World Pinot fans to the joys of Burgundy and this is a great example thereof. While decanting, wild cherry aromas were exploding from the decanter. I waited an hour and jumped in. Forward aromas of cinnamon spiced black cherries, high toned spices and just enough "terroir" to remind you that you were drinking Burgundy. Sweet, fat and really forward on the palate, this is "ready for business" but if you're hoping for classic Corton you will be disappointed. While this lacks the depth and complexity of other examples, it's hard to throw stones at such a delicious effort. 90 pts., drink now through 2013.
