Tasted blind among 6 Nebbiolo’s at SKurtz’s place. I had this pegged as a modern style wine from Barolo but this seemed rather clumsy overall for me. It seemed to lack focus though it did have that Nebbiolo trypicity and a rich and bold structure and mouth feel. Nothing at all wrong with this wine but it may have been just a bit over oaked making it harder to discern its finer points. Not one of my favorites tonight.

Double decanted hours in advance of a dinner party, in which we tasted six nebbiolos head-to-head, blinded. This bottle was brought by a generous guest. Plush cedary nose, hints of vanilla. On the palate, hints of sweet cherries, more cedar, flowers, faint tannins, black pepper, and soft acid. This wine ended up, for me at least, in the middle of the blinded bottles. The impression is of a fully mature wine at the beginning or starting to decline, at least based on the muted fruit expression. If 91/92

Served with standing pork rib roast, rice, pea pods. Opened bottle an hour before serving, decanted 20 minutes before serving. Initial look showed lovely dark crimson, no longer opaque, great color all the way to the rim.
Smell: lovely, dark fruit, plum, black cherry, a touch of honey, richness. Taste: smooth, acid is just enough to play to the fruit and keep things lively. Rich, balanced, elegant, really working well with the roast. Will probably hold for years, but really drinking well right now.

Another great bottle of this fine “simple straight” Barolo from Aldo Conterno. Big and powerful, loaded with Nebbiolo from a top address. This time slightly less open for business, in a phase, but clearly heading on towards semi maturity, 10 years since vinification. A bit more austere with more resistance and integrity, but with all the lovely qualities previously experienced present. Again, 2008 is showing exceptional, and will be long lived and continue to deliver great pleasure and drinking experiences for many years to come. I will however try to save my final bottles at least another 5 years, but I’d rather aim for 15 – 20 years more, as I’m sure this fine Monforte juice will just keep growing down the road. Great wine, great producer, great terroir and a great vintage. (92+ – 94P)

Lovely, incredibly clean nose! Loads of red ripe (but cool and airy) cherry fruit, minerals, earth, touch of tar, raspberries, with a fine and fragile perfume and flowers lingering as a mystic haze behind in a second layer, with a touch of nice Piemonte acetone. Excellent and extremely inviting. Like a siren singing to a sailor. You can't resist diving in. Palate shows lovely sweet and ripe berries, cherries and raspberries. Great structure and acidity. Some fine tart cranberries and redcurrants to, in the second underlying layer. Creamy & silky tannin frame and a solid backbone. Very long finish, with some fresh black pepper. This bottle really shows a significant development since the last bottle I had, about a year ago, with no signs of any oak or excessive infant/juvenility left. This is now officially a teenager, entering first level of maturity. 2008 is starting to come around, and shows great promise (something shown I n a number of other Piemontese wines enjoyed lately). This is such a good "entry level" Barolo, kicking ass with many much more expensive stuff. Amazing really. Tale tell Aldo Conterno, multidimensional, transparent, beautiful and intriguing. A piece of art more than a bottle of wine, from start to finish. If you are into Nebbiolo, and Barolo in particular , this is what you should be looking for. Could be the best qpr available? Pure and clean nebbiolo fruitiness with good depth. Raspberry, liquorice and that light house-typical sense of oak spice (even if they use botti, albeit renovated each time). Silky and rounded, fresh, fruity and modern. Fully accessible and highly enjoyable after a short turn in the decanter.

Aldo Conterno's "entry-level" Barolos continue to impress me. I say entry-level in quotes as these are hardly entry level. These are the real deal.
See: Med/m+ brick-ruby, fades to a lighter rim… On pop-and-pour, there is nearly no rusty orange rim at this stage, but it certainly gains with some air.
Smell: Gorgeous, with typical the Aldo Conterno imprint. Layered, deep, concentrated and detailed. A packed nose, with notes of Smoked meat, spices, mocha, licorice, forest floor, black fig, blueberry, maduro, black plum, blackberry, incense, rose.
Taste: M+ body, high acid at first, but integrates beautifully with air. Medium to m+ tannins, sinewy and bracing at first, but quickly gains breadth and flesh with air. Finish is long, with notes of black plum, dried blueberry, cedar, mineral and soft rose.
Two bottles left, can't wait to see what this does in time... If you have a few bottles. Definitely crack one now, and then see what it does in 7 years.

Very nice but quite acidic/sour - not sure whether such a characteristic eventually integrates - I'm guessing yes - I get strong sour cherries, other red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, maybe rhubarb, and not nearly as many secondary notes as other tasters are calling out. I'd say check back in 2015-2016.

This wine seems to have opened up quite a bit and is drinkable now -- the tannins are undeveloped but are soft enough to make this wine easily enjoyable now. The fruit is very good, though I have come across even more vibrant '08 normales recently -- tasting rhubarb and jammy cranberry, roses and zest. Would have probably liked a less approachable wine at this point. I may have to revise my earlier assessment of cellaring this wine for a long haul -- that role seems to be relegated to the single vineyard crues.

We decanted the wine for 2.5 hours before we poured the first glass. It offered rose petals, mixed berries, cucumber, hey and tar on the nose. On the palate the wine showed mixed red berries, cucumber and marzipan, paired with high acidity, medium-plus tannin and very good length. The wine was very tight and the acidity dominated its profile. It is not unpleasant to drink, just not (yet?) a pleasure either. Difficult to predict where this is going. I would hold remaining bottles for three years. Also, I am a little worried about the QPR and for my money would potentially rather buy half a case of the Barolo Romirasco 2008 than a case of this Barolo 2008. 88+(?)

Big nose of funky cherries and chocolate, good barolo acid but a rather plush, atypical texture and an attack that could almost be called "fruit bomb" by barolo standards. I feel like it's one for drinking young, which is perhaps as it should be, but I have my reservations. It is delicious, though.

A nose is quite closed, not as voluptuous as either '06 or '07. In the mouth, the wine is more viscous and tighter than its predecessors. With plenty of tannins that highlight sappiness and darker, wild forest fruit, this is a less forward wine -- coiled and powerful, but with plenty of extracted succulent juice that will allow one to enjoy this just after a few years. Will be worth the wait.

This shows excellent focus with a tightly wound structure and a long caressing finish. There is a long life ahead for this fantastic wine. (Best 2016-2026) - February, 2013 (JD)

Very good nose - almost confusable with a burgundy. Ripe red-currant and raspberries and a little earthy/tobacco. Good taste, not overly alcoholic. Sharp, classic italian acidity. 89-90

Retailer tasting: The bouquet is still a bit locked, but there is some licorice, anise and also powerful flavors. On the palate some flowers and good bitterness. A beautiful and complex wine. Very pleasant already, but you can keep it until (at least) the beginning of the next decade.

Italy 2012 - Piemonte; 7/8/2012-7/14/2012 (La Morra): Tasted at the winery. Quite a plump and juicy nose with notes of red cherries, plums, licorice and a smoky floral aroma as well. Rich and open with cherry and licorice flavours with excellent acidity, firm but graceful tannins and a medium plus length finish. Needs 5+ years. Excellent. 90+
