  • Very nice, paired well with cheese. Some quite palattable bitterness holds it back for me but a real nice nose regardless!

  • Somewhat disappointed. The fruit seems to have dropped a little. Maybe the drinking window is passed?

  • A blend of Viura aka. Macabeo (90%) and Malvasia Riojana aka. Alarije (10%). After the spontaneous fermentation, the wine is aged for 6 years in predominantly old American oak barrels, bottled unfiltered and aged for a further 5-6 years in the bottles before release. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted in Tondonia Blanco 1999-2005 vertical.

Evolved and moderately deep golden yellow color with a subtly coppery core - this looks slightly darker than the vintages 2000 and 2001, but very similar to the vintage 1999. The nose is relatively cool and restrained for a Tondonia Blanco with slightly evolved aromas of ripe citrus fruits, some oxidative nutty tones, a little bit of savory wood spice, light crunchy notes of red apple, mature hints of caramel and browned butter and a touch of honeyed richness. The wine is dry, evolved and silky smooth on the palate with complex yet slightly understated flavors of slightly bruised apple, some oxidative notes of chopped nuts, light caramel tones, a little bit of woolly lanolin, a sweeter hint of dried fruits and a touch of tangy salinity. Although the acidity feels relatively high, lending nice, balanced structure to the wine, the overall feel is still somewhat softer and milder compared to the surrounding vintages. The finish is long and complex but a bit on the mellow side with layered flavors of nuttiness and, tangy salinity, some creamy tones, a little bit of ripe lemony citrus fruit, light nuances of hay, a toasty hint of smoke and a touch of browned butter.

A very nice but also noticeably lighter and somewhat mellower vintage of Tondonia Blanco that feels a bit understated compared to the other vintages in a vertical setting. As the wine is a bit lacking in the concentration that seems to be the hallmark of Tondonia Blanco, this vintage feels more similar to Viña Gravonia - although in many vintages Gravonia feels more brisk and precise than this vintage. While this is a lovely and intellectually engaging white Rioja an sich, it is a bit lagging behind when compared to the other vintages on Tondonia Blanco we had in the tasting. Although I expect the wine to at least hold, if not develop, for years - even decades - more, I doubt this will become much more impressive even with age. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

  • A private dinner with friends (Restaurant Zoldering, Amsterdam, NL): Imported directly by the restaurant itself. Stunning wine. Incredibly fresh, not an oxidative note in sight, ripe citrus with a beautiful line of acidity running through it, the warmth from the oak supports and defines the character but in no way dominates, waxy bottle-age; very good length.

  • A beautiful LdH. Oxidative, nutty, waxy lemony, saline goodness.

  • Opened a bottle yesterday from my cellar in pristine conditions. It simply jumped out the gates ,, peaking after 5 minutes,, the wine of the night, month and maybe year,, already developing tertiary aromas, orange peel, toasted almonds and brioche was easy to identify ,, it is a oaky white wine but it is a really bargain and real treat. Drink now or wait ,,

  • A bit of same structure as the 2005 but more developed. Slimmer style than the 2004. that is rounder. Ok, but not really impressed.
Maybe it is just in a stage, but I would not put my money on it.

  • Musty nose; yeast, must, honey (not sweet), gentle fruit, lows but enough present to give a clean finish, aged oak, lemon/citrus notes, nice full mouth feel. Thoroughly enjoyed this and its fully open for business. I don’t see this dropping off any time before, say, 2023 and it could go on longer. My concern would be the fruit may dwindle away in 5-10 years. No hurry to drink but enjoyable. Give this a half hour plus on opening as I got a bad mustiness on immediate opening that went away quickly.

  • The nose is complex, with chamomile, dried orange peel, bees wax, dried apple, honey, slight mushroom notes. On the palate, the coconut others mention came-out, along with tart apple, and everything detected on the nose — just more intense. I’ve never had an aged white Rioja; I was curious about this one, after all the raves, and it took time to find any of it locally. What an incredible wine; so unique, so enjoyable. I’m not a white drinker, generally, but this? Oh yes, any day. The acidity is there but balanced; very clean finish. I get what all the fuss is about.

  • Served blind, but immediately recognizable as R. López de Heredia style. 12,5% alcohol.

Medium deep golden yellow color with faint lime-green highlights. Very burly, brooding and somewhat oxidative nose with unctuous aromas of browned butter, cream, toasty developed character, some spicy wildhoney, a little bit of vanilla and a hint of white cheese rind. The wine feels medium-bodied, even a bit thin and quite acid-driven on the palate with complex and intense flavors of browned butter, some creaminess, a little bit of sharp lemony fruit, light vanilla character, a hint of sorrel and tangy salinity and a touch of Granny Smith apple. Contrasting the rather heavy, oxidative character, the wine is quite light and refreshing with high acidity. The finish is lively and acid-driven with flavors of tangy salinity, lemon wedges, some tast green apple, a little bit of cream, a hint of toasty and buttery developed character and a touch of smoke.

A very fine, light-bodied and delicate old-school Rioja white with terrific brightness and elegance. 2002 was a really lousy vintage in most parts of Europe and you can see it here as well: the wine is lacking the unctuous richness typical of Tondonia Reserva. This lack of power made many people guess this was Viña Gravonia (as practically everybody agreed this must be a Heredia white), but I guessed (correctly) that this is more likely a cooler-vintage Tondonia. Very nice stuff, although really different from the typical Tondonia style - the lack of weight and body actually benefited the wine, making it feel more refreshing and brighter than Tondonias normally are. This is definitely not going to be as long-lived as most of the other Tondonia vintages - I'd say the wine is getting close to its plateau of maturity and will keep some more years after that, perhaps a decade, tops. As the fruit feels somewhat thin, there isn't much to develop, even though the high acidity would otherwise promise good potential. Still nice stuff, as Tondonia (and Heredia) almost always is.

  • 91 amarillo dorado muy intenso. Nariz de limón confitado, frutos secos. En boca tiene una frescura punzante, buena acidez y mucho volumen. Muy bueno.

  • Family trip to Rioja - June 2017; 6/20/2017-6/26/2017 (Rioja): Tasted a little tired and thin to me. Honey, lemon peel, fresh and light style and had the classic LdH Bodega aromas. I much preferred the 07 Gravonia I had the day before but don't know whether this was just bottle variation / mood etc. Must drink more to find out!

  • Classic showing for this white. Immediately that smell of their cellar (mold, whatever else) hits you. It expands marvelously with time in decanter/glass and opens up into a really beautiful wine by day two.

  • Or intense brillant.
Nez typique Tondonia, oxidatif, citron confit.

  • No detailed note. Very oxidative in style, but with a bracing lemony acidity to it. There are saline minerals, beeswax - very complex; so much going on. I enjoyed it greatly, but the oxidative character might put some people off. Will definitely buy another bottle to verify that this one was not faulty.

  • Monday night blinds (Home (Noe st)): (non-blind, my wine)
    V:
    - medium plus gold

    N:
    - oxidative - yellow baked and dried apple
    - sweet oak - mild toasted coconut, faint notes of dried vanilla. This has clearly spent some time in probably used barrels.
    - sweet savory notes from development - sort of a caramelized carrot, toasted honey thing. Bee pollen?
    - earthy notes - slight whiff of funkiness or brett

    P:
    - Has a delicious carroty tertiary development(bee pollen?) that I usually only get in musar.
    - Clear evidence of oak - toasted hazelnut and dried lemon buttercream. But used oak.
    - Dry
    - medium body
    - medium plus alcohol - 13.5% (says 12.5%)
    - medium plus acid - strong and sparkly (more tartaric than malic).
    - clean finish - no bitterness
    - persistent

    Laterals:
    - aged white burgundy
    - older chablis
    - savennieres

Superb integration. It's like a Musar, but the oak is more important, and it's painted in bold pastel, and sprinkled with some caramelized sugar.

  • First whiff is of honey, candlewax, bruised apples.
On the palate, apples, honey, chamomile tea, and that amazing thick, waxy texture that is just to die for. Finish is loooong, with a mouthwatering acidity that makes the oxidized notes be in balance.

  • 92p. Golden colour, lovely mature notes of honey and apricots. Push and vanilla. Dusty rich mouthfeel, nice acidity. Great QPR as always from this iconic producer.

De color amarillo dorado, intenso, limpio. Reflejos cobrizos y anaranjados, vivos, mucho brillo.
