Cork came out perfect with end-rim staining only. Really alive with a dense, chewy, still fruit driven profile. Way better than my last bottle proving old adage "no great old wines, just great old bottles". Pretty drying tannins so this cries out for rare meat. Damn fine wine if your cork allows.

The heat of that European summer is coming out in the wine. Complex heady over ripe nose of tar and berries. Concentrated over-extracted burnt quality to the fruit. Dry dusty tannins. Minerally graphite finish. Nose is great, gets let down a bit on the back palate. A somewhat different wine to the last time tasted, not corked. Needed an hour to come up, somewhat skeletal to start.

A thick chewy red with smoky multifaceted flavours of earthy berries. There is a wardrobe of flavour hints here. Densely packed and with fine drying tannins (needs food). Very long finish with lip smacking to deal with the drying gums. Reminds me of mature Heathcote reds. This has the thumbs up from me. It's got at least 5 years at this plateau I reckon.

Dinner at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons with family and friends for son's 30th. Limited notes. Their last two bottles (we followed up with a couple of the 2009 - noted). Deep colour. Granitic mineral core, concentrated but mellowed mixture of dark red fruits of all types but particularly blackcurrant and damson. Leather, dry spice, truffle, integrated charred oak. Superb. Fully mature, but with the structure to hold at this level for, say, up to 20yrs from vintage.

On removing the capsule the cork appeared fine, but broke in half on removal. Aerate through screen to decanter because this had major sediment, and let sit for an hour. Color is very dark red with significant bricking at the edges, cloudy, full body. Boggling fully mature aromas of Kirsch, macerated blackberries, dried bouquet of flowers, saddle leather, baking spices, forest floor and cedar. On the palate this eclectic blend of Grenache, Cab, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Mouvedre comes at you in as many directions, mixing plums, black and tart cherries, tar, perfumed Indian spices, licorice, umami mushrooms, clay tones, cocoa powder and cedar. Medium-plus acidity and what was once marked tannins are nearly fully resolved in velvety texture. Big wine with a long finish that ends with brighter red fruits, tomato, leather and earth. This held together for the three hours it was in the decanter, but I would not wait any longer. Outstanding.
Tasted blind. Inviting aromas of cabin wood, cherry pie, tar, and blueberries. Deep palate full of tar, cream soda, and cherry fruit. Soulful, reminds me very much of Barbaresco. Well-integrated, resolved tannins. In a good spot now.

Opaque crimson color. Brooding nose of ink and ash, freshly planed cedar, baking spice, shoe polish, and potpourri. This has some tart blackberries on the palate but little else. This is texturally smooth, with a faintly piquant flavor of rosemary. Altogether, though, the palate underperforms relative to the dense and intriguing nose. I remember this bring fuller-bodied, richer, and more dynamic when I first tried it eight years ago. Unsure whether this has been diminished by age or whether my memory deceives me, I am a bit disappointed in either case.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100
Poured a sip to see if it needed a decant and decided it didn't. So slow-oxed for 3 hours and enjoyed over the next 3. Lovely red-fruited nose accented by Indian spice and leather. Surprisingly restrained on the palate for an '03 Priorat. We were expecting a monster and instead got dried red raspberry fruit, decent acidity and baking spice. Some tannins provide texture but aren't drying. Really nice and much better than we anticipated.

Decanted and drank over 2 hours. Dense black color. Raspberry along with some black fruit on those. Palate was mostly ripe and dried? red and black fruits. Over ripe and a minty, pruny quality. Tannins were there but not over bearing. Long, finish, slightly disjointed.

Tasted right after decanting and the wine was extremely tight with searing tannins. After about an hour in the glass and decanter, the wine started to soften to show layers of blueberry, plums, toast and earth. The wine continued to evolve nicely over the course of dinner. Delicious wine, but I would hold for another 2-3 years.

Very dark red almost black; fresh nose of red berries, slightly closed to begin with, but opening up after an hour (was quite cold to begin with); some tannin, but disappearing somewhat after an hour, nice, round, full-bodied, power, well-structure. Good

Dark red colour; nose of deep red fruit, hint of black pepper - intense; heavy tannic, almost too overwhelming - burned, somewhat jammy. Clearly good but lacks some finesse. Further age may make tannins less pronounced, but will it sort out the jamminess?

Spain and Portugal Tasting (Casa Roberts): black spice, black fruit and a really fascinating hot sauce note (others didn't really pick it up, but appeased me, settling for 'spiciness' -- so my palate may have been off). Very long finish and medium(+) tannin levels showsdevelopment potential. But I'm not sure this has quite enough fruit in it to really carry it through for more than another decade.

Spain and Portugal (2033 Brandywine): The score is based on potential as this really did not show well tonight and may be a bad spot right now. Brett? Stewed jammy fruit. Hard to parse through and figure out what we have - just a hodge podge of fruit. Some spice and oak. Had high hopes for this and it fell a little short.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90

14.5% alcohol. decanted. tannic, but promising. i like the underlying fruit, and when the oak and tannin burn off, this will be an interesting wine. i'm hopeful it will evolve enough to garner a couple of more performance points. $60 at costco, and i wanted to try one to verify original bottle quality. i'd be surprised if this wine stretches all the way to parker 94 territory. hold for a minimum of three years.

Young, brawny and tannic. Unfortunately, not decanted (Tapas cooking and wine tasting event), this could have surely benefitted from more air time. Dark, deep and complex, with a slight whiff of bret. Many tastes and aromas going on. I look forward to trying this again with about 3 hours of decanter time.

Exotic is the first thing that comes to mind. There's just so much going on: spice cake, chocolate, smoked meats, olive, cedar, candied fruits, dark fruit, citrus maybe? Shows best at the 4 hour decant mark. Full-bodied and jammy, but not hot or tannic. Hold for another 3 years.

Big and ripe, but still balanced. Very round despite its youth, surely owing to the hot vintage. Impressive concentration of dark fruit that expands over the palate, with earth, chocolate, spicy oak, eucalyptus, and a hint of bitter orange -- all framed by firm acidity and a healthy tannic backbone. I'm sure this will improve with time, but with extended aeration, you can drink these while the '04s maure. 93+

Espanha (Piselli): Garnacha (40%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) e Syrah (20%). Provado às cegas. Rubi muito escuro, impenetrável. Aroma fresco e bastante mineral. Meu chute: Mogador 03? E.

Hard to parse through and figure out what we have - just a hodge podge of fruit. Some spice and oak. Had high hopes for this and it fell a little short.

2003 Clos Mogador Priorat (Spain, Catalunya, Priorat) (Spanje, Catalunya, Priorat) Kleur: Robijnrood Aroma / bouquet: Beetje gesloten, gebrand, duidelijk kruidig, vleugje mint. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 15 + Algemeen / potentieel: 6 = 87/100

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90

Decanted 2 hours. Medium+ body. Big and ripe. Rich red and dark fruits. The cab brings a nice tannic backbone to the whole unique package. A slippery mid-palate from the syrah.

Layers of ripe dark fruits with excellent depth and concentration. Interesting sweet tobacco notes, cherry, chocolate and earth with medium tannins and nice flavors on the finish. 91+ points, foodandwineblog.com

Clos Mogador / Benjamin Romeo Tasting (Rheingau Gourmet & Wine Festival Hattenheim, Germany): Has suffered less from the heat than the Manyetes 2003 but has a distinctly burnt character, more international style owing to 50% non-indigenous grapes, leather and eucalyptus, good tannins, lacks length. Nice wine though.

Medium to full-bodied wine that is dark magenta in color. On the nose, berry fruit and a little steminess. On the palate, black cherries and chocolate with a very long 30-40 second finish. Very Merlot-like wine.

Seattle Tasting Group does Priorat (Bellevue, WA): Stemmy notes, resin, showing more barrel than the other vintages, a little whiff of brett. Very oaky and yet plush with raspberry jam, chalky, mineral, VERY mineral.

Lighter ruby/garnet color. The nose reminds me of plums, raisins and a touch of nail polish remover. The nose is very good. Good intensity on the palate with a slightly cheesy quality. Well balanced and fine. (17)
