Beams with cedary plum fruit laced with pencil shavings, herbs, spice and light licorice accents. Deliciously mature and fresh fruit and resolved, silky structure. Long, complex finish. In a glorious mature peak zone.

A bit dirty and funky at first, cleaned up very nicely with a bit of air though. Fruit is fresh and silky, energetic with great acidity, medium bodied and elegant. Totally different style than modern Ornellaia, and certainly preferable for me.

Popped and poured, cork crumbled halfway so I was a bit scared of the quality that awaited. Needs 30 minutes of decanting definitely. Fully developed Ornellaia, as you can see both on the color and nose. Deep brick in the glass. Aromas of dried cranberries, dried cherries, twigs, cigar box and dry forest soil. Palate is smooth, with the tannins fully resolved and the acidity on the moderate side. Still very well balanced and has a long finish, but luckily I caught this before its downhill journey. Needless to say this will not improve at all, but it was fascinating to see Ornellaia's style just before Michel Rolland came onboard. Piece of history right here.

"Drink it while it's delicious" (Chicago, IL): An absolutely gorgeous bottle of merlot. Super Tuscans rarely ring my bells, but this bottle was lights-out fantastic. The plum/chocolate character of the fruit was in full display here with a full palate that shows sweet fruit along the same lines. There's a slight herbal tinge that might identify this as Italian, but for me, this was pretty much an archetypal merlot.

Whoops, I was advised that my review of yesterday mistakenly identified Ricardo Cotarella as Ornellaia's winemaking consultant. Make that Michel Rolland, the Bordeaux-based oenologist. He started with the 1991 at Ornellaia.

Brought by a friend to a Bolgheri tasting. Told that this was the last vintage before Ricardo Cotarello appeared on the scene. I was blown away by the silky, sweet fruit that stayed on my palate for over a minute. This was the best wine I've had in a long time. I have three vintages of Ornellaia from the mid-90's in my cellar and this wine was uniquely different. Less 'structured,' melding a myriad of flavors and retaining brightness all at the same time. Thrilling!

Dallas CTers visit NYC offline: Wow this was in a great place tonight too. Tasted side by side with the '90 Pepe. The nose was full of earth and dark fruits. On the palate, lovely and mature, tannins have softened around the red and black berries, spine of acidity still providing a backdrop for all the lovely earthy character and spice that comes through. One of my favorites tonight!

An after dinner treat. Bought a half bottle from Hedonism in London. Not the best price, but fun to try. Pours a bit musty at first, but it's opening up in the glass. More black fruits. A nice tannic structure. A touch of the old library flavor. It's well integrated. Not a wine for a lot more aging (at least from the half bottle). Prob would be a bit better with a splash decant, but don't have a decanter here.

Purchased on release, this wine had a deep red center and light red rims. The medium+ intensity nose that developed after 6 hours of air was quite different than the nose when the wine was first opened. At first, the nose was attractive but subtle and low intensity. After substantial air the nose blasted cassis, wax, black cherrry, and some anise. It was very nice!
In the mouth, this wine was quite light at first and was not particularly long. It evolved to show good fruit, light but firm tannin, solid acidity, and some minerals. Oddly, it tasted rather young, like it wasn't showing all it had, despite being very refined and smooth.
This bottle was still getting better after 7 hours and I ran out of runway. It will never be a big wine and it is certainly hard to say if it will improve. I can say with certainty that it will last at this level for 10+ years, it is pretty nice, and it might get better.

Casual (Mostly) Italian Wine Dinner with Friends (Ballaro - Highwood IL): In 90/96/97/98 vertical. Ripe black fruit maturing nicely with anise, black pepper and green pepper. Very good concentration and even better length. Drinking well, and this should hold at this level at least five more years, probably ten.

The nose was very good and had traces of tertiary aromas of sous bois and leather. The fruit was faded on the palate and the texture was slightly thin and did not seem to have the stuffing to hold up. The finish was medium long. The wine does not seem to hold up as well as their counterparts from Bordeaux. Perhaps it is due to the age of the vines. It would be more interesting to see aged versions of the newer vintages. Expected better from such an illustrious producer.

Very nice. Drinking at its peak now. Typical mature cab. Reminds me a lot of the (better) 1980s Cali cabs. Salty, beautiful mature nose and still some good structure left

Needs considerable time to open. Lovely complex nose of red fruits and shortbread, green pepper and cedar. Seems on the hot side though; a few sniffs and my nose is numb. Maybe a tinge of undesirable VA?
Fabulous mouthfeel. Great balance of sweetness and acidity, and impressive concentration. Fine-grained tannins and a nice long finish. Quite delicious.
Overall though it's hard to get too excited about this. It somehow seems to lack a sense of place, and it's hard to see why one would buy it over an equivalent wine from the Medoc at half the price.

The 1990 Ornellaia surprisingly came across as a smaller-scaled wine next to the Solaia. Its dark nose showed wild berry, savory herbs and dried floral tones. On the palate, it was rich and focused with dark fruits and hints of sage, yet turned slightly tart through the finish. I can’t help but feel that this wine needed more time in decanter to open up.

Seattle Offline IV - Italian Wines (Henry's House (Seattle)): Underwhelming nose of sweet fruit, tobacco and herbs. Tight blackcurrant and cherry on the palate, with leafs and stalks. Soft, round, plush, elegant and quite classy. This is fully resolved, and is understated but quite delicious. It just lacks a bit of excitement and the complexity you would find in a first or second growth Medoc in the same vintage.

Decanted for about 30 before serving. While this did not fade during our meal, it is a bit past prime. Tannins are gone and this is smooth and pleasant to drink. If you are holding, now is the time.

Similar to my experience with the 1999, the 1990 just seemed more evolved than many of the other recent TNs so it's possible the bottle may have been different. This only offered a couple of good sips then exceedingly drying tannins with nothing else. Shame as I would have scored this.

New world wine drinkers need not read. Old world wine drinkers, stick around for a minute. This is a very serious wine. Massive scents of blackberry, tar, and coffee. On palate, ripe red fruit, smoke, fine grainy tannins, all wrapped in moderate acidity - balanced and focused. Medium plus finish. At an excellent drinking period.
