Good aromatics with stems, black tea, and red fruit. The concentation of the wine was shy to 99,08,14 on the side. The core fruit was not as pure and fresh as the other wine tonight, and it carried an earthy undertone. 92-93

La Paulee Gala dinner….along with it’s siblings showed tremendous aromatics, though I felt the fruit wasn’t quite cranking to the same level as the best in flight (90, 05, 10). A bottle I had of this a couple years back seemed to have a bit more power, perhaps because that wasn’t in a lineup such as this. Nevertheless it has to be considered one of the successes of this vintage

10/09/05/03/02/00/98/90 vertical. I preferred this to the 02 and it was in a perfect spot in the context of the line-up. Not as much concentration as the best wines in the flight, but very attractive spice and black tea complexity.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. At a perfect place right now, this has both fresh and mature red cherry & berry, baking spice, earth notes, and layers that kept unfolding in the few sips I was able to enjoy. Certainly less concentration vs most in the flight, but a perfect wine for the vintage.

Signature DRC nose. The palate was a little angular and I felt there was a bit of a hole in the middle. I used to love drinking 2000s but maybe time has caught up with some of these and the limitations of the vintage is starting to show. Still a nice wine and one might have better luck with a different bottle. Had this twice within the month with consistent impression.

DRC GE Lunch: The first whiff and sip made me howl with delight, literally. Aromatic fireworks of classic Vosne spice and rose petals, so effusive one had the sense we were drinking at the absolute peak. It's in a perfect state of evolution. Upon first pour this was the best of the flight vs 2002 and 1999. A couple hours later this seemed to be fading where the '99 was just picking up steam. If you want one vintage of GE to enjoy now as a pop and pour, this is the one.

What an interesting now. It really leaps out of the glass at you, almost like placing your head in a bowl of potpourri. It was so floral and intense. The wine is perfectly balanced and so easy to drink with a long aftertaste. Drank at SW Christmas party.

Significantly paler red color than the '91 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands Ech served side by side. A soft, elegant nose of brighter red fruits with a prominent woodsy-stem note that is quite pleasing. Over a few hours the fruit profile became noticeably darker. Huge Vosne spice on the nose and palate. Beautiful texture in the mouth. Really firing on all cylinders right now--persistent finish. This wine will last for years to come, but really is drinking quite well at present.

Usually the focus on any table…but tonight this took a back seat to two amazing Heitz Cellars wines…74 Martha's and 68 Chardonnay……the GE is another example of how well the 2000's are drinking right now……wonderful fruit and pretty spices…..somewhat lighter bodied…crisp and crunchy red berry fruits….silky smooth and showing wonderful Asian spice, perfumed potpourri, smoked woods, cranberry skin acidity….starting to show a little aged forest and some olive as well….but still very vibrant. Tasty with all the food courses…all night! So good!

Krug Dinner with Some DRC (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Open 2 hours before serving. Great Asian five spice, particularly on the nose. Nicely mature red fruit, most enjoyably on the palate. Aromas slightly better the flavors, but this is just incredibly alluring in every regard right now.

Both bottles were almost identical. I have mistaken DRC’s GE for La Tâche a few times over the years as it tends to have a soy character that I see in La Tâche and this had it as well as some beef stock and smoke. It still had the engaging florals and red berries of the Echézeaux but was a little deeper and had a bit more stemsy grip to the finish. The fruit was jube like and sweet and luscious.

A private lunch (Restaurant Steinheuer **, Heppingen, Germany): Mature but lively appearence; wonderful, immediately attractive nose, mature but lively, layered and seamless, expressive but subtle, deep and mineral, light and floral, slightly smoky, lovely ripe fruit, sous-bois, hint of fishiness, simply beautiful; the palate is all silk and minerals, wonderful balance and freshness, calm yet nerveux, absolutely classical but somewhat lighter in weight in this vintage, lovely lifted and complex flavours, with tannins that are almost resolved but still provide backbone to the lovely sweet fruit; excellent length, wonderful aromatic persistence, the proverbial peacock's tail. A thing of beauty, an absolutely perfect bottle. Not decanted, fully mature - in fact it starts to lose some of its fragrance and finesse after about an hour. Drink sooner rather than later.

Very difficult to find any real flaws. The nose is full of bright fruit. The first taste explodes into a bouquet of strawberries that mature into a lingering taste that goes on for an eternity. I expected big things from this wine and it did not disappoint. It has some time before it matures to boot.

Drank over 3 hours. Very open nose of sweet red fruit, lots of spice, just a hint of green every now and then. Great texture that was at once silky and yet had great grip. Opened a couple of hours before. This wine simply blew me away, never before had I encouintered such a perfect combination of finesse, complexity and intensity. Beautiful, perfumed nose with scents from all registers mixed in endlessly changing combinations. Tons of fruit there, but also spices, herbs (green and black tea). Oak is definitely present but harmoniously integrated in the blend. Palate showed incredible intensity and volume, pronouced sweetness but with impeccable balance. Tannins are abundant but of such refined quality that the tactile sensations they procure are a treat by themselves. Great length. Even though I am sure this is possible, I can't imagine anything better than this. DRC rocks big time!

Kitchen Tasting Group Tribute to Brad England (La Belle Vie): I loved this wine. The nose was an epiphany -- redolent of deep, dark liquor-like cherry, mushroom, and asian spice. Oh so expressive. Awesome. The taste may not have been quite up to the level of the nose, but offered a great dark fruit and mushroom combination. Excellent balance with plenty of acidity. Tannins are dusty and obscure the finish a bit. I would hold these for at least five years before opening again. Spectacular!
