For a 9 year old bottle, I was surprised how fresh this wine was. Color was a nice ruby red with almost no sign of browning. Nose was light but fruity and earthy. Body was fine and flavor was of very nice dark fruit. Perhaps it could have held another year or so, but it may be at its peak now.

Drinking and showing so youthfully! dark purple crimson core, still maintaining its bright purple pink hued rim. Immense nose of stewed plum, earthy rock, and black raspberry coulis/sauce. Clean, bright, uplifting and inviting. Nice from the start, but Improving and evolving with time in the glass. It is fresh to drink with medium plus acidity. The alcohol is moderate, at 13.5% but seems lower. Balanced fruit/acid/alcohol. medium tannins still present. This wine has been improving for 2 years since I've followed it and should continue to soften and integrate nicely for years to come. I'm buying all I can of this vintage for $8.99 a bottle. Great juice. Fantastic wine bringing the old world into the new!

Served @ 17c/63f, 13.5% abv, with Swedish Meatballs & noodles, caprese salad. Wine is Dark Red in the glass, almost purple-ish. Nose of Raspberries; Dark Red fruit like plum on the palate. Light to Medium body, well-balanced, firm but not too heavy on the tannin. Smooth and pleasant with a medium astringent finish. Good with food, and is also light-bodied enough to be good just for casual sipping on its own. Highly rated by a recognized authority, I would agree, i/m/o closer to 90 points than 86. Apparently still available around $9, a good QPR. Noted some sediment in the glass as we neared the end of the bottle.
Subsequently opened a 2008 BV Merlot for comparison. The Merlot was your typically well-crafted California wine, good quality and consistent, but dinner partners preferred the lighter Spanish Mencía as a dinner accompaniment to the full-bodied Merlot.

Paired this with my Spaghetti Sauce with #9 spaghett and Italian bread. My wife loved it. I found it to be remarkably bright but with a dry and firm finish. I even had it with some desert pastry and it was vibrant and smooth. My sommelier at Saks recommended it with pasta and did us right.

Mr. Big gave this a 91, I bought this bottle from a retailer on Saturday, not sure of the storage but if I had to rate probably a 85, the flavors are old world with a lot of earth, truffles, musty and a bit on the light side. this may have been better with consistent storage but only paid $8.

Bought because it was an atypical wine varietal being showcased at Whole Foods. Mencia is supposedly related to Cab Franc but this wine drinks more like a light Mouvedre. Fresh, acidic, with intense cherry on the forward palate. I wouldn't drink this wine on a regular basis but it is good.

Pnp'd about six ounces into a glass and the rest into a wide bottom decanter. The nose offers up green olives, dried cherries, freshly cut herbs and stuffed grape leaves. Unusual but not unpleasant. In the mouth I'm picking up some earth and rocks, Bloody Mary mix and a hollow mid-palate with little discernible fruit. I figured it might be best to give it time to wake from slumber.
Came back three hours later and the wine is transformed. You can still tell it's the same bottle but its personality is different. It's like seeing that guy at your high school reunion who's now not the douche bag you remember. The fruit on the nose has lifted and I'm picking up menthol as well as spice box. The palate is now a juicy core of raspberries wrapped in tobacco leaf. Fine but firm tannins. Impressive complexity and balance for a $10 bottle of wine.

The aroma features big red fruit, some oak, and a bright element separate from both of those. The flavor has lighter fruit than the aroma, less oak than the aroma, and is a little sharp on the tongue. The tannins are on the strong side, making for a lasting finish, with some fruit, but not much oak.

definitely a food wine and will likely only appeal to the experienced wine drinker.
great texture. smooth and lush but with juicy acidity and mild tannin. mouthfeel is the biggest selling point here.
restrained fruit, mostly leafy wild cherry and whiff of black currant. there is a savory black olive and sweet meat note that could make this a great food wine with the right dish. on the finish i pick up a clean graphite/mineral component that helps tie everything together.
lets be honest, this is worth every bit of $8 but may not be for everyone. refined, but not necessarily a crowd pleaser for a crowd used to fruit bombs.

My Grade: VG. This is a more extracted treatment of Mencia, I prefer the lighter, more Pinot-like wines from Bierzo and Ribiera Sacra. Dusty Black Cherry color, watery rim, nose has red berries, stewed plums, rhubarb notes, vanilla and some funk. Forward and well focussed cassis and sour cherry on the palate with black pepper, dark chocolate and burnt toast notes (quite Syrah-like). Fine tannins, juicy and mineral mid and finish. Loses some of the nuances of Mencia due to extraction, but still great value.

Full blog post available at https://wineesquire.wordpress.com/2015/03/16/a-spanish-mencia-and-thoughts-on-wine-ratings/
We brought this wine to dinner with friends. There was no breathing, no decanting, just popped the cork, poured and sipped. I do not have much experience with Spanish wines, and this may have been my first Mencia[6]. On the nose I got hints of musty leather. The first sip was dry with very spicy undertones. This was a thinner wine that did not give you a big mouthful like the 6th Sense Syrah. Like the Chateau de Lavagnac Bordeaux, this wine greatly improved when enjoyed with food[7] and I think the time it spent breathing as we socialized and ate helped it to relax, allowing for a smooth and enjoyable finish. Husband thought the wine was “young” and that it still had some aging to do in the bottle. I don’t know if I’m sophisticated enough to know what that means, but we’re going to put the remaining three bottles in the cellar[8] and see what happens in two to three years. I’m going to put all my cards on the table here and tell you that I paid $7.99 a bottle. At that price point, you can’t go wrong because after ten minutes of breathing and paired with food, this was a very enjoyable wine.

My score is somewhat influenced by the $9 price as it is a good bargain. Fairly low but present acidity. Black fruits and dark cherry with soft tannins. My first if this varietal but it drank well with food and by itself.

We liked it. The wine looks purple colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis), mineral and lead pencil. The body is medium. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

First experience with Mencia. The scents in the nose was pretty intense. It is a medium-body wine with a (a bit overly) simple structure. When it hit the palate, the first explosion of dark fruits tastes was immediately followed by the finishing tannin. The tannin is very refined and sweet (that's probably what made Parker give a 91 point, instead of 80), which is carried along in a medium finish. Great drinking wine to have for just less than $7.

Old school -- not a Cali wine. Deep garnet color. I'm not familiar with this varietal (purchased on the 91 points from RP), but has a chateauneuf-de-pape nose; blind, a would've guessed a gamy garnacha. Some leather, graphite, white pepper, and sour cherry on the nose. Palate has a focused core of dark cherry with some noticeable, but finely integrated, tannins. This is not a big, brooding wine; on the contrary, it is light on its feet, but nevertheless has some characteristics of a bigger wine. Good now, but I'd bet this wine will be significantly better in a few years.
Dark red with purple rim. Plum, dark cherries and sweet tobacco in the nose. In the mouth a strong, not too well integrated acidity that lasts and takes over in the aftertaste. The taste has sour cherries, green herbal notes and coffee. A strange and not particularly well produced wine. Parker gave this one 91 points? That definitely tells us more about Parker than this wine....

Translucent red/purple in color, this wine showed leather, balsamic vinegar, plum and blackberry on the nose. The mouth feel brought supple tannins with an odd, burnt espresso taste. The finish was uneven with the tannins fighting with the burnt taste.
Purchased for $9.49US, this wine is well made but the burnt taste and lack of noticeable oak elements made it one I barely enjoyed and not one I'd purchase again.

Aromas of blackberry, balsamic and leather lead to flavors of balsamic, blackberry, and cherry. Decent finish of 15 seconds. The evolution of this wine was strange as it started off strong and after an hour the palate seemed to cut out. After that period it seemed to return and it only lost a little steam of day 2. Very strong value for the money from the Mencia grape.
